I visited the Mercedes Classic Center in California and though it might be interesting for Mercedes enthusiasts:

That sure is a feast for eyes
The Pontons are my favorite of Mercs
Hope to get one needing restoration and adoption- like restoring uncared-for cars

And I am your new best friend

There is a Ponton that could do with some lovin'. It's a beige coloured example parked at the petrol pump bang across RTI (Peddar Road). I'll try getting a picture the next I'm there. Will also ask if it's for sale; however, if you really want a Ponton, I suggest your heading to the pump ASAP.

Hi GTO, if i haven't eaten up half the brains from anmol & speedy searching for a ponton, i now seek your cranium. Can you please get me the details of the ponton and a pic if possible. I'd be much interested and would love to get my hands on the lady. Appreciate your assistance.

My bad, sorry about the misinformation. I did stop by last evening on the way back from work, and the car in question isn't a Ponton.

Amol, the silver 190d was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy beyond my reach. the black one you'd sent earlier was more affordable.

Okay, but the problem here is there are very few unrestored unmolested pontons left in India, most have been restored. Even 7 yrs ago bad cars sold for about a lakh.

If a car has been restored the way MBZ 180 is doing on his thread with every piece as accurate and factory made as possible then the car lands up costing way above what people feel it is worth. In that scenario its very difficult to pick up a car within a tight budget (you have not declared yours). But again you need to get lucky and you can never get lucky with any car parked in a petrol pump in South Mumbai for sure

Hi! I just wanted to add my two bits.
If a car is way beyond your reach, well that is sad, but you can buck-up and save till you reach the market price. And then try again till you get THE car. But if you are following the car valuation thread and are being guided by that, you may feel morally strong in your stance, unfortunately reality will leave you empty handed. I really know what I am talking about, I have been active in ALL stages, started in the hobby when I had no money to talk of, over the years have bought cars cheap, reasonable, expensive and extremly expensive. My signature car, the Lancia, was bought blind, i.e. unseen, and was so expensive that one of the guys involved in rescuing the car mailed me that he was hoping to buy the car till some idiot (me) bought the car way beyond its conceivable value. Yes, I know what I did, but today, the bearded man chokes when this car cvomes near him, or its picture is published in some magazine.
I am in a very good mood, India having won the match and me witnessing that from a watering hole, the truth then is easier to express.

Cheers to India, and to our hobby as long as opinions remain without an agenda.

Cheers harit

Re: Vintage & Classic Mercedes Benz Cars in India

Hello Everyone,

There was a weeks delay in the engine rebuilding of the Finnie. The rings which had come in were too tight for the sleeves, and my engine mech rejected it, after which even the machine shop rejected it.

Following this, exact micrometer measurements along with a sample of the old ring was sent to my supplier, and yesterday, the new rings came in. Today morning my mech checked it out and says it the right kind, and these are the solid type rings which he prefers.

They are Theves-Thompson GMBH, ATE as you will see in the pics, and are original DB replacement rings.

Sleeves and pistons have already been honed, now for the assembly which will spill over to next week. Stay tuned for more updates!

Best Regards
