Prithvi, might i also suggest you mask the entire dashboard, as it is one of the most fragile things in a 220S, cant tell but do you still have the original dashboard top?

Amol,

If you mean the wooden strip on the dash, it is original, but the padding is not. We will be removing the entire dash in any case, so no need to mask.

There is extensive corrosion to the engine bay firewall and cowl, so will need to remove the whole dash to work on these areas.

Thats a lovely stereo but I doubt that it is original equipment. The Monza you have in your car is from about 1975/76. The symbol for the casette is the give away, the previous models from 1971 had the full word CASETTE written on the slot.
It has definetly been a part of a later Mercedes model and found its way into your car.
The Mexico was the first Becker with a built in casette player.

Still in my opinion it looks very much at home and fits in very well with the other components of the dash.

Alvis,

You know your radios really well Did a little research and you're spot on, it's not from 1961 but from the mid 70s. Had no idea.

As far as I know, 220Ss always came with radios as standard, so maybe this Monza unit replaced the original Mexico unit. Thanks for the info.

Well I'm really no expert on radios or stereos but the thought just struck me that casettes had not been invented or were not common when the W 111 was in production!!

As far as I can remember casettes came out in the market in 1968 or slightly later. I remember my grandad bought me a Sanyo casette player in 1970 and it was the hottest gadget in school.

Anyway I personally think it fits in very well and if I were you I would keep it in there.
I also remember that the 220S was also supplied with Blaupunkt ( not too sure of spelling ) radios also, as were a lot of the other Mercedes models of the time.

That's a nice clean looking Fintail. Should be a 200 judging from the indicator lenses.

Re: Vintage & Classic Mercedes Benz Cars in India

You really have some great MBs in India- Australia has no where as many early models especially pre 1950s.

Re: Vintage & Classic Mercedes Benz Cars in India

Mods: Please shift all the posts for this car to a new thread titled Restoration of a 1961 Mercedes Benz 220S Fintail.

Thanks

Here are the latest pics of the progress on the body work on the 1961 220S.
1) All 4 doors completed
2) Front chassis both sides done
3) All floor boards done
4) Both side rocker panels replaced

From today the trunk area is being started.

Also, a couple of pics of the just received big end and main bearing set sent by Indrojit, who had ordered them from the US. They are Glyco make and are all 20 oversize (0.50 UST). Gasket set by El Ring is on its way from the US.

Have also ordered 20 oversize piston rings from Bangalore. Should be despatched tomorrow. Then engine rebuild will start.

Regards
Prithvi
