Hello all,

Now getting back to the engine rebuild, here's what we are doing:

1) Re-using the old pistons as they are in good shape
2) Re-using the big end and main bearings which are also in good shape
3) Changing all the valves, guides, seats etc.
4) Inserting new sleeves for the cylinder walls
5) Inserting new rings
6) Slight facing of the head
7) Changing all seals and gaskets
8) Re-using the timing chain and it's guide rails
9) Changing the timing chain tensioner if required

Prithvi

Hi everyone,

The 220S engine has been sent to the machine shop, and it seems that we do need to change the big end and the main bearings as there has been considerable wear to the old ones.

The head has been sent to weld the corroded areas around the water passages, after which it will be lightly surfaced.

Pistons are ok, so will be re-used. Will get new rings, valves etc. and bearings, as well as all gaskets and seals.

Block is undergoing acid wash to cleanse the water passages.

Hey 53BHP,
I've seen this beauty off and on in Mumbai. Probably not a t-Bhpians.
The car is driven very regularly I imagine.
Lovely sight - I once saw some foreign tourists launching into a photo-frenzy when this beaut passed along Pedder road !!

@53bhp - Seems no one noticed that the car you were driving is also a Merc! Which one is it? The W123?

Alas its not a 123.It doesnt even qualify as a young classic so no pics here. Its a W124 E250D. Have had it for 4 years and 80000kms and have loved every moment with it!!!!

friends i need some help.i am restoring a 220s w110 1961 which came without an engine.the engine which i got came from a left hand drive so the exhaust manifold is different and it interferes with the steering box.the stromberg carburators have also some parts missing.the air fiter is also not there.
if some one help me locate a right hand manifold and carbs i shall be really obliged.even solex carbs will do.i dont mind if a complete engine is available. i have two more 220s w110s and a 190d w110 which are complete. shall post the pictures soon

Hello,

The 220S Fintail is a W111 and not a W110. I am also restoring a 1961 220S, left hand drive though. You may find a right hand drive manifold in Bangalore. The 1961 220Sb should have twin Solex's and not Strombergs. Even the later (1965 onward) 220S and 230S had twin Zenith INAT carbs.

This Pagoda Merc SL is a real survivor. Purchased way back in the 1980's, she belonged to the Vohra brothers, and is still with one of them. There was some turbulence, the car landed up in a workshop near to French bridge with a broken screen, broken dash, totally ravaged. From there she was brought to the Sriram Mill compound. Had an engine transplant, restored with plastic headlight lenses. One fine day the owner awoke, and got the car redone at Sanghi's. And procured a good number of original parts, now looks really nice and ran at the recent Karwale event. Car now resides in Juhu.

Cheers harit

Hi Prithvi,

Pls ask your denter to remove the window and quarter glass before patching up the doors, as they may get damaged during the process.

Salman

Hi
There was an ad in the TEAM BHP classifieds for a special Mercedes W115 - think it was a coupe or somesuch - last year. The car was black, with a cracked windscreen [I think] and was being sold from Coimbatore or some southern city.
Apologize for my hazy memory - but does anyone else remember this listing? Can't seem to find it.
Thanks for your help
Amitabh
