I was recently scouring the Mercedes-Benz archives to get hold of some literature for my W202 and this is what I bumped into instead.

From the archives, it reads:

Fonseca & Co.: sales outlet of Daimler-Benz AG in Delhi, India. The photo was taken around 1928.

P.S : Since this is circa 1928, so I presume that the European gentlemen in this photo are British? If so, then that would probably explain why the three pointed star is mounted up side down. Also, I am posting this in the original resolution as it's such a beautiful portrait, reducing the resolution would have taken away some of the detailing and charm. Please pardon.

Here is what I saw on RM Sothby's site today (4-15-20)

RM SOTHEBY’S ESSEN AUCTION AT TECHNO-CLASSICA IS POSTPONED UNTIL 24-27 JUNE


And...then on the same site it says:


"1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A set to headline the German sale. Chassis no. 154081 was ordered new by H.H. Yeshwant Rao Holkar II, the 14th Maharajah of Indore, with factory coachwork by Sindelfingen. One of just 83 two-passenger drophead coupé Cabriolet A models built, the 540 K was gifted to a unknown recipient by the Maharajah before his death in 1961 and resurfaced in a Mumbai shop in the late 1970s. Eventually exported to the U.S., a nut-and-bolt, award-winning restoration was commissioned on the very complete and original car by RM Auto Restoration in 2002."....


I am also curious is to how the 540K car was allowed to be exported to US after 1970? I presumed that the Government of India had prohibited exports of all Antique vehicles.

I did not understand the significance of this mounting. Is it related to World War 1 or something?

The same Inverted Logo appears on a 1921 Mercedes Racer, having a 18.8 Litre Benz Aero Engine installed on a 1910 Mercedes Chassis. Peter Helck Drew the Inverted Logo on the Car. He called it the Benz Mercedes, The other way around.
Not sure if it was Having the Logo when the car was built in 1911 or Was added later on. They do look Familiar. I do not think it was ever endorsed by the company, Subject to correction on this, Of course.

The ban was introduced in the mid 70's so it is quite possible that the 540left just before the ban.
