Re: Vintage & Classic Mercedes Benz Cars in India

Turns out this lovely 240D was parked quite near to my residence. It was also a participant at this year's MB classic rally. Well maintained car!

Since you specified that they are fintails, I believe this could be one of your cars

Was going through this thread and came across this Fintail. Has there been any progress on this car? I had seen a similar car a year (but a blue car) rotting somewhere - it had the same dent on the bonnet and the roof. Probably a different car but hope they have been rescued and survive now.

Well, as far as I know one can only take one family owned vintage car abroad, provided it was in long term ownership. That collection also has cars which are post 1960...........

Till one sees proof of more W100's in India, I will believe that only two of this model ever came into this country.

I wonder if this is the same W100 600, Ex-Shah of Iran, discussed before. Understand the below was cleared out of the Mumbai Customs recently and is heading to Delhi. So, is the below car a recent Import or a failed Export?

Came across this 1920s brochure for the Mercedes SS models, listing out prominent owners including Indian royalty.

What a list Karl!! Great find
From the Vanderbilts to European royalty, Egyptian royalty to Indian royalty. Probably today even the Bugatti Veyron customers may not be of this stature..

Living in Dubai, I can safely say that the Veyron owners have no stature just too much money. It will be interesting to see in even 10 years how many Veyrons have survived given the rather high rate at which dumb kids crash daddy's Veyron. The percentage will no doubt be amazingly high.

Re: Vintage & Classic Mercedes Benz Cars in India

What a list!

Apart from Royalty, nobility and pioneering industrialists, the 2 names that stood out for me were R. Caracciola and Briggs S. Cunningham

I'm told it's a recent import on TR. The Arabic on the plate roughly translates to "Mohammed Al-Tahiri" and the number is apparently a local phone number from the UAE.

the iran embassy/shah car was blue when it was auctioned in delhi in 1994, it had CD plates which were taken off in front of me, so it had no plates at the time it sold. this is another car

Re: Vintage & Classic Mercedes Benz Cars in India

Got a copy of this issue of Mercedes' in house magazine "In Aller Welt" (Around the world / in all the world?) There is a large feature on the Indian operations, mainly relating to Tata Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles.

A service wagon (Hillman/Commer?) and an early Ponton.

Coincidentally we have seen another period picture of the Ponton here

A red plate (Royal) 300 - seems to be a convertible. Perhaps the Kutch car?

There is also this lovely image of a 190SL in front a 'Chettiar Temple', but it is likely not in India - perhaps Singapore?

Karl,
"Mercedes Benz all over the world". Those magazines were available in German and English and I believe were monthly. I have a few scans from #3 (1956) so I would put your #40 at sometime in 1959. Remembering that it would take time to photograph, send everything to Germany, print and distribute the magazine in those days, could that be right for the vehicles?
The SS registration is indeed for Singapore from about 1958.
These magazines always had a lot on Indian vehicles in the 50s and 60s as Tata was a very important part of the MB empire so keep your eyes out for more.
Can you check please that the milk van is indeed BMQ 1613?
Cheers
Cedric
