I recall a pristine Mercedes 220 (Ponton) belonging to the Anand Group CEO / MD (Mr. Deep C Anand ?), and taking part in a vintage intercontinental rally (London Peking ?) maybe 25 years back.
Iirc, Mr. Tutu Dhawan was the co-driver.
Anyone have pictures of that car ?

No Karl, Anand's car was a 220 S, you show a 180/190. Anand's car was blue, and as said before, in excellent condition.
I am sure that you will have a photo of that car.
Cheers
My mistake, here it is. Blame the effects of medication :D I just looked for the first dark blue Ponton in Delhi I could find.

Thanks Karlosdeville and Harit.
Yes, I recall the car was a dark blue 220S and had the bumper mounted driving lights as well.
The second image posted is the car in question. The placard even mentions the 1996 FIVA Rally. She's a beauty !
Cheers,

Saw this beauty parked in front of the police station at India habitat centre yesterday evening. Seemed like it's in running condition but couldn't find anyone around to ask more about the car.

This is a well restored 67 Model 230 with a 6 cylinder twin carb engine. Nice car !
Travelling in style........Mercedes with fitted luggage, ca 1960.

These luggage sets were made by the German firm of 'Hepco' especially for Mercedes. Today, a full set, when available on EBay, ends at around $12000 to $15000!
During the Ponton era, the official supplier to Mercedes Benz was 'Karl Baisch'. You may have seen these sets in the trunks of 300SL Gullwings and Roadsters abroad. Karl Baisch sets also go for ridiculous prices but are available relatively easier than Hepco sets, because Hepco sets were soft cases and several got worn out and were unusable as time passed. Baisch sets, being hard case sets, lasted longer hence more availability. For some reason Merc ended their association with Baisch in the early '60s and switched over to Hepco.
Here's are 2 period brochure illustrations from the International Ponton Owners Group website showing an earlier Ponton with a Karl Baisch set and a later Ponton with a Hepco set. Also a photo of a Ponton with a Karl Baisch hard case set.

Excellent car. Rare to see R107s, and even more rare are SLCs. If I'm not mistaken, there are only 4 or 5 cars in India. A Red 450 SLC in Delhi, a Gold one in Bombay and this silver one is all that I know of.
Beautiful !!
Beautiful.. a MB, a coupe, a V8 & pentas; what else can one ask for??
I was advised to never ask someone if they are going to sell their car. Yet, I'll take the liberty because you indicated the possibility of selling it. Is it still with you and any plans to sell it?? |
Apologies for the delayed response... nope - didn't sell it but ended up getting it restored :)
That's even more beautiful than I'd imagined. You have a buyer in Delhi if you are ever interested in selling it. I'm sure they'll be many admirers in Bombay too who'll want to grab this car.
Beautiful Ravi... Excellent car with a great paint job.
Cheers!!

This is a good car owned by a friend in Byculla. I was negotiating this car, but bought a 1969 w115 220 petrol.
My newly acquired 1969 Mercedes 220 W115. I will try and start a new thread on it. The plan is to make it just like it was all those years ago.
I'll need help from fellow members here.
