Melanie Webb says "The Bangalore Motor Sports Club was started by my grandfather Fred Webb along with some others. The Yellahanka air strip was used as the racing track. My father John Webb and grandfather Fred Webb frequently won the races. An assortment of exotic cars were present. People from villages were gather from far and wide to watch the rallies."
"I am pretty sure this is correct because my Grandparents and parents were all present there and the photos have been archived by my Grandmother. I have more pics of the cars and will post them soon."

Raghunandan adds "The only recorded instance of a XK Jaguar racing in Yelahanka, happened on 3 Feb 1957. This was reported in the pages of a magazine named the "Motor", published in England, in its issue dated 20 Feb 1957. The account of that race does not mention any of the other cars shown here. So the mystery deepens! Fascinating!"

Can any of our experts remember anything about this and can they comment about Webbs / BMSC of the fifties?

I would like to see more photos of these races. The last photo is inconclusive because there is no registration number, and though I have so many photos of racing MG's, none are without mudguards. Therefore I can't place this MG. The lorry looks to be east European, and the open door next to the MG doesn't fit an Amby. At least some vehicle in the background would normally show India setting. But the first two photos are more indicative that these photos are not in India. I saw the first two photos a while ago, the Gullwing is LHD and no other India racing photos has come to my attention. All registration numbers don't match. And background of the photos again don't prove India setting, there are Sikhs present, sure, but they are all over the world. The racing Porsche also has no India history known.
The photos are superb, I would like to see more, but I seriously doubt India setting. I may be wrong ofcourse, lets hear others point of view.

to sum up : the R129s and the S classes were impressive and polished ! many w124s . the cars of the 80s and earlier were few. convenient peaceful venue. tasty breakfast. good weather. fairly good turnout.

I remember seeing this Merc 500SEL in Cochin in a workshop. I was looking at a w114 280 S which used to be an S but it had a lot of rust.

I wasn't around in the 50's but there's something very incongruous in these photos. In the first photo, most of the spectators in the foreground are westerners. Only the odd Sikh & perhaps an Indian going around with a box of refreshments.

Then there are the cars. A Gullwing, D Type/ Type Jag, XK 150, XK 120, Porsche 356 and I can see 2 VW beetles between the 2 photos. Somethings not quite right. Maybe South Africa?

Going by the advertisements in the first picture, I think it is the UK.

Post-war, it appears to me. Also, note the British registrations on the cars.

It has long been said, that only one 300SL (Gullwing) came to India with a Diplomat. The car went back.

I doubt it ever raced.

I felt that , Melanie Webb seems to be a grand daughter of the Webb family of Bangalore . She has written about her dad and grand dad ! and posted these lovely period pictures alongside . Various Bangaloreans have posted their comments similar to ours ! And there is a doubt in many minds .

Everything said, God bless the Webb family ! there was a famous Webbs Garage who serviced and repaired Mercedes cars at Peenya and MG Road Bangalore untill the 80s. My dad repaired his white fintail there sometimes as well.

I agree, Kavesh 55. for example , a few months ago, i found one gets a immaculate single owner w220 2002 fully loaded model 'S 500 L' with AMG for about 10 lacs at Delhi!

hence, owners of much earlier S class models must think twice before quoting ! and introspect which car they'd choose themselves, if they were the buyer instead of the seller!
