Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

These pictures are from Gumraah (1963) , the Sunil Dutt- Mala Sinha starrer. Bombay streets mainly around the Churchgate- Fountain areas are shown in some outdoor scenes.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

A song from the late 50s movie 'Howrah Bridge' showing the then Calcutta. Looked truly a car paradise then with so many Brit and American cars abound, unlike the following 3-4 decades when there was hardly anything other than Ambys on the road there!

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Some scenes from the Hindi film Chupke Chupke. The dark steel grey Premier President is almost new in the film. Also seen is the parking lot of Dadar railway station. Two postal vans (Dodge Rocket and a Dodge/ Fargo) can be seen in red, a grey Tempo Viking/ or maybe a Matador, apart from the Fiat taxis.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

A few pictures from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) feature many prominent places in South Bombay, especially near the Flora Fountain, Churchgate and Marine Drive areas. The cars seen here provide an insight into the rich and varied collection of several big, small and exotic cars moving on the streets and static in the parking lots.

That is a nice clip. If you look closely you can see a Chevy Fleetmaster woody - wonder if any survive in India?

An old favorite of mine. The President MTC 921 is not grey but Natina Blue. The white Fiat at the Station 8152 is not a 124 but a 1100R.

In the last few pictures Madhubala is seen with her Austin Somerset BML 3546. In the last but one picture she is pushing the car, that has supposedly suffered a breakdown.while Kishore Kumar watches.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

A lovely song set to tune by the great Shankar Jaikishan. The video shows Shammi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore moving within the beautiful downtown areas in Paris. The whole city looks so clean and well laid out. The historical structures are a treat to see.
I feel when I was there in 2001, the city did not look as clean and and so well maintained.
The video is from An Evening in Paris (1967). Peugeots, Renaults and Citroens dominate the streets.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

A song from a not-so-very old movie (I remember hearing this song in 1990, as a kid!) which seemed to have been very popular in the early 90s, with a Standard Gazel (!) appearing in it! Quite a few cosmetics from this car are missing though and it seems to have had a hasty, cheap paint spray just to be used in the song:

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

An old song, perhaps the oldest featured here on this thread. This one is from 1942, from the film Jawab. The then singing star Kanan Devi (1916-1992) and heroine of New Theaters is seen on the video. In the pre-Lata era, she was one of the greatest female voices during the times of Shri Kundan Lal Saigal in the undivided India.
Again the film capital was Calcutta then, as all the stars were located here and film making was mainly done from Calcutta. So for this post the thread title is "Tollywood" and not "Bollywood."
The song features the then fastest train Toofan Mail - no there is no car featured on the video, but the rail compartments and the engine are clearly visible of the then bygone era. Toofan Mail connected Delhi with Calcutta, if I am not mistaken.

The lyrics from 70 years ago is so meaningful but simple:-

Toofan Mail, Duniya Yeh Duniya Toofan Mail,
iske Pahiye Zor Se Chalte
aur Apna Rasta Taye Karte
sayane Is-se Kaam Nikalen
bacche Samjhen Khel
toofan Mail...
koi Kahan Ka Ticket Kataata
ek Hai Aata Ek Hai Jaata
sabhi Musafir Bichhad Jayenge
pal Bhar Ka Hai Mail
toofan Mail...
]jo Jitni Poonji Hai Rakhta
]woh Utna Safar Hai Karta
jeevan Ka Hai Bhed Batati
gyani Ko Yeh Rail
toofan Mail...

Cars and commercial vehicles in films, 1950s-70s

Dear all,

I wish you a belated Happy New Year and all the best for your motoring and other activities in 2013!

I am still writing my thesis on the history of automobile use and motor transport in 20th century India. A recent idea for one of my chapters was to collect and analyze films from the period 1950s-1970s, where somehow cars and commercial vehicles figure at the centre. Thanks to this forum, I already watched Naya Daur, which is exactly the kind of film I would like to find more of. I have also seen Ajantrik, which is quite a different story in that it relates the intimate relationship between owner and car, but it
resembles in that it is about mofussil and not urban India.

Do you have any suggestions for other movies of this kind in the period I mentioned above? This could be basically about any part of the country. Would be very happy and grateful to have your ideas about this.

All my best wishes,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

I guess you research will become much easier if you have not seen this thread yet.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Here are some shots of a nice Companion and a Vanguard phase 3 from a 60s Telugu movie (although this movie was shot in Madras, as were all Telugu movies of the time, hence the Madras state numberplates)
I suspect the Companion would've been Litchfield Green.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

From the 1967 film "Milan", Sunil Dutt and Nutan are seen moving in a Dodge Kingsway (or is it a Desoto) convertible MSY 288.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Inderjeet Singh Johar (16.02.1920 - 10.03.1984) was a multi faceted film personality of his times, who made his mark as a comedian, radio personality, writer, director, columnist and also a singer.
He was the most famous for his wit and sense of humour. A sample from an old Filmfare issue (Q&A by I.S. Johar) :
Q. Why do you always walk out of film-land parties?
A Its better than being carried away.
The thespian suffered a massive heart attack and passed away on 10th March 1984. A belated 29th death anniversary tribute to one of the most talented, but very under-rated personalities of Bollywood !

Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars-zd_tourists.jpg

As it is a comedian's shot, the automobile in the background has been fully camouflaged. However its a Matador! I.S. Johar occupies the position at the centre with his check suit.
