The convertible in this movie belonged to Shankarnag and i heard it still remains in the household.

Yesterday night on a DD channel a south indian movie was running. It would probably date to the 80s. It showed many scenes of a 57 (?) Buick convertible, off white colour. The regn was KLF 3223. It seemed bruised and battered like most movie cars.

Does anyone recall the movie or the car? It looked similar to this.

There was a very similar car used in a Hindi movie called Maard. In that the lady drives this car around a fountain, and the hero comes along in a horse. The horse then stands and comes down with its front hooves on the bonnet. Later this car ;ost its engine, windshield broke. It went to Indore, then Delhi and again sold. Meanwhile some GM V8 engine was obtained. Probably the same car, I do not know the regn no. It was greyish in colour.

While browsing, came across a song DD1.Coudn't really id the actors probably was Tarik Shah (not sure).The car used in the song was 55-56 T-bird conv.Couldnt take a proper pic( thanks to Nokia).Any idea about the car and the movie?

I'd managed to get DVDs of a few old Tamil movies when I was in Madras the last weekend. Mainly because they all are said to have standards in them! :)
One of them is this 60s movie "Par magale par" starring the veteran tamil actor late Sivaji Ganesan. I havent seen the full movie yet but in the last scenes there comes this Standard Companion, which happears to be black, but in the later scenes, it changes to a lighter colour- sounds familiar? :)

And in the last scene showing the car, they seem to have swapped it with a Pennant, as I could see side-trims on the front fender, which the companion doesnt have, even though only that part of the car was visible.

Thats from a true blue Standard enthusiast Stanher.In fact the Madras roads used to be flooded with Standard Super 10, 10 Pennant and a few Companion taxis till the late 1970's.But the fact is that Herald taxis were not seen.Maybe due to its poor build quality. So old Tamil and Telegu (even Telegu movies used to be shot in Madras as most of the big stars and studios were located there) with city scenes can show many Standards as taxis and private cars.
Ambassadors were very popular as a private car apart from the Standards.

Thanks anjan! Yes, I do know MADRAS (as it was then called) was full of Standard taxis, all being only Super 10, Pennants or Companions. I sometime wish I was a cabbie there at that time, atleast I could've got to drive one of those cars on a daily basis! clap:

And continuing from my previous post, here is some more eye-candy of yesteryears' Madras, these being from another 60s Tamil movie "Vallavann oruvan". The hero, Jaishankar, drives a nice mk1 Herald turned into a convertible specially for the movie no doubt. The number looks nice although could've been a fake for the movie. Note the neat period chrome bumper cappings on the Herald!
You can also catch glimpses of various other classics of the time, including the Pennant cabs in Madras as mentioned! Also can see what looks like a Fiat 1500/2300 saloon? (circled)



























Also spotted the neat Standard Atlas/20 Van from yet another 60s Tamil movie, "C.I.D Shankar" The bodystyle looks quite unusual- it looks like a separate van body coachwork attached to the front cab. I love that flash trim on the side! 'must've been a custom job though.

Nice to view the older pictures Stanher.Saw the assortment too, among them being the 1960's Fiat 1500/2300. MDS 6622 reminds me of the two tone painted, convertible Herald shown in Pyaar Kiye Jaa.The Dukkar with the centre light also looks like new.
Wish to also add that even Standard Vanguard taxis in Madras were not seen by me during my first visit there in 1977. Vanguards are sturdier and are among the sturdiest Standards ever made/assembled in India.They may have also had their heydays in the taxi fleets of the 1950's and 60's, becoming rarer by the 1970's. Thats only a wild guess and may need to be authenticated.

The Herald in Pyar kiye jaa was again used in a tamil movie and was all the more beautiful, regn. was MSW 6959 (changed to a fake BML 6959 for the movie!)
Vanguard taxis may have been used in Madras initially, but they sure were common in Ooty until a decade ago! Someone had posted a pic. of a junking Vanguard phase 1 taxi in Ooty with a Madras (MSZ) regn., since said to be restored and gone to Kerala.

OK, here are the other pics. Fiat lovers will love these! :)
A very lovely black 66-67 Delight used as the bad guys' getaway in just one car chase sequence in the tamil movie "CID Sankar" The hero chases in the mk2 Amby (MDA 3120) and fires a shot, resulting in the fiat's LH rear tyre getting punctured and the car coming to a halt. You can see the nice original magazine holding net on the rear of the front seat.
However, the car first seems to have slim whitewalls and in the later scenes shown with broad whitewall tyres! Any guesses why? ;)

Also a few other cars in the same movie, including a nice early 50s(?) Chevy pick-up truck and a Willys station wagon with yummy white-walls and the original hubcaps- I've so far never seen a surviving one in India with the latter intact!! 'gives it a totally different look altogether!

What car is MSC 4108/9- a pre-war Morris 8 I'm guessing?

'wonder if any of these cars survive now...!

More pics. from another 60s tamil movie "Vallavanukku Vallavan"

The lovely '56 Plymouth Savoy MSY 9911 is used throughout the movie. I remember having seen the same movie remade in Telugu long ago, and a similar (maybe the same) car was used but the number it had on was MSY 9511 IIRC.

Also what vehicle is the panel van MDS 755? From the front grille, it looks similar to a late 40s/early 50s chevy pick-up truck, so is it a chevy? Is the body original or custom-built?

'dont recall seeing anything like it before, even in movies.

The last pic. shows a Standard Super 10 taxi. Madras roads seemed so empty those days (as were most other city roads I guess)

And here's more coming up. A Padmini "special" (assuming from the colour combo) seen in the late 70s Tamil rajnikanth starrer "Thillu mullu" (based on the Hindi movie 'Golmaal') Note the matching nice 2-tone interior!

Other cars seen from the same movie are a Morris Minor tourer (with Amby headlights I suspect), a 4-door (mk3) Herald (just glimpsed briefly) and a Dukkar fiat taxi! Plus Lambrettas galore!
