Were the Railtons offered with those wheels and hubcaps? It just might be a Rolls with different wheels! Looks quite nice all the same.

It looks like a railton to me too. Except for the indicators on the Front fenders.
Also, what is the circled car in the picture below??

Are there any Railtons surviving in India? There used to be a couple in Bombay.

The Bahawalpur 540 K was bodied by Barker, delivered of the complete chassis was at Mercedes Benz ( England ). Sadly this car was taken out of Pakistan in 1967 with a mileage of less than 5000 Miles on the odo. Last year it was on e Bay, will try to look up pictures.

Here are some stills from the film “A Passage to India”
The site objects to hot linking so you’ll have to replace “dot” in each address with . in your address bar, as I can’t get rid of the hyperlink once it uploads here. Any advice anyone?
These are of a very wonderful Bentley that is probably well known to most here

This Austin 12/4 used to be in Delhi. I worked on it in the early 80s. I wonder where it is now? I remember they took it up to Kashmir by truck for these shots.

Lovely full screen images, worth a look for those who haven’t seen the film.

Some free publicity for 2 films shot in India containing cars still in India. "A Passage to India”(David Lean) and “Gandhi” (Richard Attenbrough). Do go out and buy genuine versions of these films today from reputable sources. They are worth watching.
From “The Passage to India”: Unfortunately the final shot of the Bentley and a Model A Ford? has slipped to the end of the post and I can't persuade it to return to the company of the other Bentley shots.

I'm not doing politics on these two films I'm just here for the cars

From the film “Gandhi” a 1921? Silver Ghost (still in Delhi) though I did a lot of work on this car I don’t have any numbers or details anymore (20 years ago)
Also I believe the armoured car was a PII and it was being towed/pushed. Try and spot the tow rope.

From "A Passage to India"
An Austin 12/4 in Kashmir which I also did some work on the car used to belong to one of the respected judges of the Statesman rally in Delhi who also owned many cars including an early OHC Wolseley.

This Bentley shot should be with the others but it resists all attempts at moving it

I must say hats off to the faithful replica of the amoured vehicle. I cant think of too many movies back in the day which would take that much trouble.

The 1919 Fiat was bought by Peter Travasso's father in 1931 from a Parsee family. It is still with him, and has been to rallies all over India ever since the movement started. Peter is now in his 70s and almost blind, but his spirit is amazing. We called him up a couple of years ago in the first week of August to attend the Fiat club event in Pune on 15th August. With barely 10 days notice he readily agreed to make it to Pune from Bombay for the event - in the pouring rain! He took 11 hours to do the otherwise 4 hour trip in the pouring rain in a convertible with no side windows. I was quite sure he had caught pnuemonia. With his son behind the wheel they did the rally, and spent the next day shopping - again in the Fiat. I just couldnt believe the ease with which they took the Fiat all over Pune in the busiest of roads at peak traffic to buy Kayanis famous buiscuits.

Thats Peter in the light blue shirt and his son Kimber in the dark blue shirt, and fellow tbhpian Ram on the right. Pic courtesy Prabal.

EDIT - while on the subject of the Gandhi movie, did you see this Renault featured? The owner tells me it was part of the movie. I think it was a BYF regn. Excuse the picture quality, its all I could manage
