The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread

Though the first auto rickshaw came on the roads in 1948 but a year earlier in 1947 many prototypes were commissioned by the firodias and were built on the ape/ Vespa platform here are some of them. I particularly like the woodie version. How I miss them.....the sound of that massive diesel idling, the lurch when shifted into gear, the rattles from the glass on the upper deck. Sitting on the front seat and ducking everytime the branches in front of the Corporation Office hit the header.

Must have made the trip from Sasthamangalam to Statue Junction and back a thousand times.......those memories, the nostalgia will never fade.

Those were indeed the real "Titans". Thanks for posting!

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread

My young FB friend Mr Abhishek Kushte has very newly bought a second hand truck. Its a 1962 Bedford.

The family is in transport business since generations. They had some Bedfords in the family and these have lately been scrapped. He is fascinated by this brand and his "wish list" always had this old brand topping his charts.

Must say that after a lot of search, he has zeroed upon one thats quite original. The speedometer and fuel tank are also original and the previous owner has beautifully seen to it that the truck is as original as possible and the truck is still in running condition. Abhishek says he has already done 200 kms since he bought this. In the eleventh picture, he is seen (in spects to the left) sporting a dark grey T shirt.

This may be the only original Bedford of that era in India. Most of these have been scrapped.

Abhishek has said in his message that the owner and his family members started crying , on the D Day of the truck's departure from their house, after the purchase. The first owner's family members said they had gone places and the "Laxmi" is leaving their house. A teardrop of their grandfather fell on stamp paper meant for signing the sale agreement.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread

Hello Anjan ,

It needs emotional persons to keep the passion alive - no wonder the old gent had tears in the eyes.

But what drives this Bedford - what is under the bonnet -if it is the 6 cylinder Bedford engine - it's a gem if it is not , then the young gentleman in the picture should source the original engine and get the truck working.

Fargo, Bedford, International and other American trucks of this era and earlier models also are available, the catch is in getting a vehicle where everything is as supplied by the manufaturer.

I feel happy when I see the next gen interested in vintage vehicles for the sheer pleasure of handling the vehicle.

Regards
Chauhan

Taken during construction of the Vivekananda Memorial in Kanyakumari. Note the "bare" rock in the background.

Seems to be a holdout / survivor from WWII days! Looks LHD . And "wheel chocks" painted to match the truck ????

Lovely!

Though while it looks LHD, I think thats just a reflection in the glass. The 'bulb' horn is on the right.

You are observant! Or may be they employed a "horn blower" because the truck was two hands full.

I remember being there as a kid - and watching those amazing stone masons at work.

They also used some WWII "barge" boats to transport the stonework across - until the 1980's they were used to carry tourists going to the Rock.

A Tata crane now in use by the Kolkata police - clicked about two days ago ! This is a military disposal truck, going by the build, commensurate with the defence specifications.
