Re: Standard cars in India

A Standard, probably a Taxi, at the Gateway. This is a contact print, and maybe the gateway was the focus.

Cheers harit

Wow, first time I've seen a Standard 10 used as a taxi in BOMBAY! By this time Fiats should have been more popular. Or maybe this one guy thought to be different!

In any case I guess they didnt make it as cabs there due to being underpowered as opposed to the fiats? Spares also would have been easier (in b'bay) for the latter.

Standard Ten's were used quite a bit as Taxis in Madras. I remember seeing them right up tothe late 1970's.

A pity indeed, looks like a very decent car!

Yes 'hope this gets a Kadam rescue, Good Luck!

And yes, the Super 10s (like this one) and Pennants were used as taxis in Madras for years. They were known as the 'baby' taxi.

The black colour 56 or 57 model (I dont remember exactly) was bought from Muvattupuzha in Kerala for Rs14000. I drove it through Muvattupuzha on that day and what was needed was only a new battery.

This car was once owned by Malayalam movie star of yesteryear Shri Jos Prakash. In one of the Metroplus sunday pull out of The Hindu, there was a mention about this car in which Shri Jos Prakash carried dry cleaned suits to his shop from his house.

My friend got the entire spending reimbursed in a year flat and kept possession of the car for a couple of years more. What he spend was a mere Rs 500 for a touch-up-and-polish. He did not drive it for more than say 5KMs.

Contrary to his verbal consent to sell it to me, he sold it later to a hawker for about Rs 2500 without bothering to even inform me.. I called him all the names I knew and told him that he is my foe..
do you remember the Registration number of the car?

I was just emphasizing on the need to conserve fuel, not simply on the cost front but against the limited resources left on mother earth.

On the lighter side, three idlis and a vada is available for Rs 15 in many railway stations between Kochi and Trivandrum.

The 4-door version was unique to India.
Restrictive government policies forced all motor car manufacturers to think out of the box. This had to be developed to become more acceptable to the car buying public. Today we collect convertibles, coupes and 2 door sedans as they were rarer, but that is so because fewer were sold. And this applies to almost all markets.

Re: Standard cars in India

Hi,

A car which i was hoping to post from a long time, here goes. Is usually parked in the same space quite close to my place. Is a runner and seems well looked after, i am not sure of the originality.

regards,

Srinand.

Thats a neat car! Pity its being parked outdoors! :(

Looks quite original but for a few things like the tail-lamps, rearview mirror and the rear numberplate light (actually a Bullet tail-lamp!) and- if I seem picky- the silver-painted rims (should be cream! )
