Re: Standard cars in India

A Herald in front of a lovely building bearing the name of Life Insurance Corporation of India. This building is too grand for such use

Cheers harit

Re: Standard cars in India

Really nice car though it seems to be a Triumph Herald and not a Standard. BTW Sonu bhai congrats on driving the Herald for the first time. Hope you enjoyed it.

Looks like a very nice car, just needing a little more TLC. Yes its an imported TRIUMPH Herald, although the entire dash and meters are from a later Indian (Standard) herald.

Also glad to know that you'd driven this car!

Re: Standard cars in India

This page is from the February 2012 issue of Auto India. It is a collectors issue featuring the second part of the 100 Automotive Favourites, discussing several automotive topics where I have also contributed. Also covered are the Kolkata rally as well as the Karvale event by Kasli.
It is a coincidence that this Standard is so similar to Stanher's avatar, and maybe that is just him driving the car. You have to see the issue for what is going on there. Auto Expo is also covered.

Cheers harit

Yes that is very much my Stanher and that is very much me in the car!

I still wish they'd used the title that I & my friend (who'd written this article) had thought up- 'HARK! THE HERALD'
'cant wait to grab one of the Feb. '12 issues when its out here (maybe next week!)

CONGRATULATIONS for getting featured in Auto India. How did they know that you have an immaculate Herald? Or you know someone at Auto India?
Now I have to pick a copy. It should be a collector's item for sure

twas through my friend Rehan Conyers who'd compiled this article. He's just a student but writes freelance/as a hobby for AI.
His father had a Herald too, which I think I'd posted a pic. of here once. He regrets to this day their selling it back in 2000!

Spotted this Phase 3 Vanguard the other day - probably awaiting restoration, I hope.

Vanguard's design looks so similar to that of the Ambassador, the car it competed against. Were the two cars designed by the same guy by any chance? Standard India was forced to stop Vanguard's production, thanks to Birlas' influence in Govt.

I read the entire article in the magazine around 10 days back Just thought that maybe you didn't want it mentioned on the forum (don't know really why I thought that).

Most of the issue either feature articles from Bhpians or pics of their cars and in your case of course, the centre spread.

Haritji, nice article

Regards
Prithvi

Yes, you're right about the forced stop due to Birlas. But no they were definitely not designed by the same person. The early (and possibly later) Vanguards were designed by Walter Belgrove, who quit the company in the late 50s.

Hi shyam: Just finished reading about your CAN. That's a great car you acquired lucky man. I think it was only your article that made me buy the magazine
