That is a junking Standard 8, not a Pennant. You'll find pictures of it earlier in this thread.

I see that car almost every week.. Such a sorry state it is in. When you look at the car, it feels like the car is begging to be rescued..

Re: Standard cars in India

Very soon, I will photo feature a Standard (never featured this one here on teambhp) with all original badges, meters and even the company paint. The car was in daily use till about a decade back. Sadly, the owner passed away and it was lying neglected. Its now being done up.

Well it certainly has been featured in various online ad sites before, been on sale since a year. The price has been increasing every time too!

Nice car (just needing a bit of TLC) but technically it is NOT a 'Standard'!
This is a UK-made TRIUMPH Herald, a direct import. Appears to be brought in from Bengaluru.

Re: Standard cars in India

This is from the official website of my favourite music director the late Shri Madan Mohan ( June 25, 1924 to July 14, 1975)

[quote] "A few months before his death, he had a miraculous escape, when his Herald car, skidded off the Western Ghats, and was fully destroyed, while he managed to escape this mishap, by jumping out of the car!! In a state of shock, and minorly bruised but undeterred, he arrived into Mumbai by a taxi and went straight for the scheduled recording to the studio, as he was never late for a recording!!!" [unquote]

[quote] "All were thrilled at his miraculous escape, and the lease of life he had been granted. But this miracle was short-lived... a few months later, he succumbed to his bitterness and his disappointments, and the miracles he left behind were his songs and compositions!! "[unquote]

Wow!! This is news to me!! I do remember having read recently a Filmfare mag issue featuring Madan Mohan and this accident was mentioned in it too. It said that he was building a house at Lonavala at that time and used to drive down to and from there to supervise the construction. However, on his way back to Bombay one day, his car had skidded off the roads while avoiding a truck and fell down a slope by the road. He managed to escape as mentioned here. However, I had then thought it was his Studebaker car (a turquoise and white one), which he is said to have loved a lot. 'never knew he had a Herald!
Also presumed that it happened around 1965-66 as it was said that he had to conduct a song recording for the movie 'Mera Saaya' (1966) that day and straightaway proceeded to the studio after the accident without letting anyone know.
'wish there were pics. of the car (before the accident) to see!

Re: Standard cars in India

The Standard that I spoke of yesterday. This one is in a rotting condition, but very original. It is to undergo restoration at a local garage. The car is in safe hands now. The new owner is quite well known to me and is a vintage aficionado. The headlight glasses, cut out and distributor are Lucas "Made in England". The meters are made by Jaeger. The lock on the driver's side door (outside) is integrated with the door opening lever and not with the button attached to the lever. In most other cars including the Landmaster/ Ambassador the door lock is integrated with the button.
The pictures:

The driver's seat of this car and also the Standard Super 10 (or Super 8) were so low in height, that even tall persons would look short from the outside. For average height persons, the neck and head would be visible from the outside and not the shoulders !

Wow, so it turned out to be a PENNANT!! And yes, its in very original, almost untouched condition, although needs a lot of work! But glad it'll be getting the much-deserved attention.

Incidentally I'm reminded of a white and blue Pennant, BYJ 4114, which was sadly laid to 'rest' in a scrapyard in Pune for years, only to be destroyed in the film shoot of the movie 'Khaki' some years ago!

I also have a tail-lamp cover to spare if the owner needs one.

And there is also one rear side-trim piece on ebay UK, for the left side one that the car is missing:

Re: Standard cars in India

Nice car. There is no corroded off area though rusted and therefore the body can easily be restored. The dash and steering is pristine. (The add on Ambassador Ammeter and switches excluded)
The Lucas English head lamps (700 Head Lamp) was shared with the Ambys just like the Cut Outs.
One funny thing noticed is that there are three HT ignition coils mounted. Reason unknown.
