Re: Standard cars in India

My father posing with his grandpa's Standard [1950]. He learnt driving in this car thanks to their driver. I remember travelling in this car to Marina beach, Madras!

Indeed! This is an early Gazel so must be around 1972-73. Looks very complete...tempting too- almost!

Any rear/interior pics.?

What colour is it btw? Looks like a faded black?

Re: Standard cars in India

Hey Karl, that Gazel really looks nice !!

Guys, sorry for this pathetic picture, but this is all I could manage.
Saw this Standard Super Ten (??? Shyam ??) at a garage off FC road in Pune.

The garage was as abandoned as the car, but some seedy looking characters sitting around started looking at me suspiciously as I got close to the car - so I had to make do with this pic, and beat a hasty retreat

Hi Ravi,
This is a rare Standard 8, older than the 10, and has been featured on the forum earlier. A sad sight indeed, its been lying that way at the same spot since years! I first saw it myself in 2005 on my first visit to Pune (Karl showed it to me). 'tis in Shivaji Nagar IIRC? There was a lumber depot right behind the car then.
The owners are not traceable, although someone new on tbhp once claimed that it belonged to his cousins and that he was going to pick it up to restore soon...and he himself never visited the forum again!

Hope someone is able to rescue the car. Looks very sweet but forlorn..

Re: Standard cars in India

I have seen 3 Standard 10's, here in Nagpur. 2 of em are in pretty good condition (seem to be non-runners) and other one is in shambles. Dunno if they are for sale.

Re: Standard cars in India

I got a nice set of family pics of a Standard Vanguard registered in Bengal.
One came as a negative and I got it developed. It seems that the film was not forwarded properly and so 2 pictures were overlapping, making this resemble trick photography. And probably that is why this was not printed in the first place.
In my opinion these were cute cars.

Cheers Harit

Wow, great looking car you had there as well!

How long ago was this? What was the colour (apart from the white portion)?

And how common were Standards in your part of the country? I was under the impression that they were less popular than in places down South, Ambys and Fiats having more preference there?

The front parking lights are not original to this model, these came on the post '62 Heralds. But wouldve been fitted as a replacement that was easier to find.

You can find interior pics. of my car in this thread:

Here's another pic. of the same car he shared with me. That's his mother and cousin on the Chetak. This might've been somewhere in the mid/late 90s.
