This is a early 50's Standard Vanguard

The car has recently undergone some restoration work and is roadworthy again

More of the Standard Vanguard

The Vanguard was the last solid and well built car sold by Standard Motors in India. The solid build is sorely missed in the later Standard Super 10, 10 Pennant, Herald and Gazel.

To my knowledge I have no idea if this was called a deluxe model or such. I doubt if it couldve been classified as such as it came after the "plain" standard super 10.
Yes this 10 model came in white and green also. Our karl has one!
As I said, same colour but planning to make the blue a bit brighter.

Cy, poor you buddy! You remind me of Cyrus Broacha in that "mera number kab ayega" (forgot what product it was for) ad!

Psst- try and persuade your dad to pick up that black one here- at your own risk of course!

@JayD, wow, awesome herald chettan! And an equally lovely old bungalow! 'makes a great period shot (minus that modern car in the background!)
Wasnt this same car photo'd earlier under restoration (posted by Cyrus in the LHD fiat thread?)

It didnt have the roof then so I though he's changing it into a convertible! Thank God its been restored it to its original glory only!
Any pics. of the dash?? It looks like an early ('62) mk1 to me going by the bootlid badge position.
'love those whitewalls!! Are they easily available there?

@anjan, nice vanguard! Good to see one of these still around! I havent seen one in Hyd. as far as I recollect! The dash could've been done up better though.

Wow, I never imagined that a humble little Standard Pennant could get so much attention!
Congrats on the new acquisition! Want me to scout for any spares at the local gujiri?

Anjan, brother, yes cars of the '50 were always built solid. Take our own Ambassadors for instance there is a lot of difference the way they were built in '59 and 60s than what was built in the '80s and what is being built now!! Unfortunately so. Build quality has definitely suffered.

Very good example of the Standard Herald, very fresh looks JayD - looks like we're back in the 1960's- "Turn back the clock"

Yes brother Dussey, what I meant was that even the Standard 10 , Standard 10 Pennant and the Herald of the 1950's and 1960's were poorly built. Owners always had woes from their bodyline. I fully agree with you as far as the Amby bodylines are concerned. Even the old Willys Jeep CJ3B that I had was much much tougher than the 1970's CJ500D or the new MM540DP, that I use.
Meanwhile here is another image of the Standard Logo way back then.

Whoops, sorry, didnt notice the front bumper- that doesnt make this a '62 mk1! Maybe its a '63, the bootlid badge did continue to be fitted at the top centre a while later.

A more recent "sneak peek" on my Herald and pennant-

The former has had the seats/headlining and nearly all glass taken off- which exposed more rusty corners! Body to be off chassis soon.

As for the pennant, it turns out there is more work required on it than I had anticipated! Yeah yeah, I know old cars much too well now, so dont give me that look!

The flooring and door sill bottoms were found to be quite eaten away. Plus the hinges for the front doors are cracked at the base, requiring some welding there (driver's door done already).

The doors are to be patch-welded along the bottom, which made me go forward with the repainting in the first place.

But I'm not stripping the whole car and scraping off the old paint etc.

Just a 2-coat but effective respray on the outside.

The garage guys are doing their level best, 'just hoping it is done by 15th!!

Shyam, Do it once and do it perfectly. The Penant requires a heck of alot of work. Forget the rally, do a proper resto!
