Checked on the Net and was able to gather the following points

The "Brothers" name was dropped in 1930. Post 1930 only Dodge

Till 1927 they had 4 cylinder engines. For the first time in 1927 the 6 cylinder was introduced called "Senior Six". The 4 cylinder engines were called "Fast Four Line".

From 1928 only the "Senior Six" was retained.

Exactly so its strange that this car is showing a 4 banger in it.

The bodystyle is from the late thirties and there is a similar car in Hyderabad with a 6 so its strange

Actually, I think the 6 cylinder engine was discontinued in 1928 only in the U.S.

Dodges built in Detroit and exported to the Australian market had 4 cylinder engines for as late as the 1935 model year.

An example is the dodge DM series, which had a 4 cylinder plymouth engine in Australia, while the U.S version had a Dodge 6 engine.

This particular car is supposed to be a 1938 model. while I'm unsure if a 4 cylinder engine was offered in any of the 1938 australian dodge models, it may be premature to assume that the car has had it's engine changed. Need to research this further.

Here are some technical details of chrysler/plymouth/dodge 4 cylinder engines used in the era :

Size Bore Stroke CID Use
186 3.625 4.500 185.8 1914-1925 Maxwell 25 / 1926 Chrysler F-58
170 3.625 4.125 170.3 1927-1928 Chrysler I-50/52/1929 Plymouth Q
175 3.625 4.250 175.4 1929-1930 Plymouth U
196 3.625 4.750 196.1 1930-1932 Plymouth 30-U/PA/PB/1932 Dodge DM

Welcome Pankaj to the Forum and thanks for your inputs. Such inputs add value to our discussion. I in fact own a 1932 Plymouth PB which is 4 cyl. as shown in your note above.

Question in our mind remains as this is the first 4 cyl. we are seeing with a 1938 Dodge. We always have something new to learn and it would be interesting if anyone can authenticate this.

Cheers

Hi Subbaiah,

I am aware of your 1932 Plymouth. Though we have never met in person, I am a regular visitor to Sripathy sir's garage and I was present when your car was being restored. My congratulations to you and your father on your car(s).

To get back on topic, further research might help, but the only way to be absolutely sure about the originality of the engine in this car would be to inspect the engine number and see if it falls in any of the Plymouth/Chrysler 4 cyl series for 1938. However, I guess that may not be possible unless the owner is a T-bhpian or is known to one.

Yes, I took a personal interest in the Vanguard Estate even though I was not purchasing it - Glad to see that it has gone into the right hands. I was able to obtain the original paint codes from the Standard Motor club and also the original instruction manual, workshop manual and sales brochure from the United Kingdom. Hopefully, they may help in the restoration process.

Harit, Was this the shape in 1957? I thought this ended in '57 only in India, and in in USA this shape stopped in '55.

This is 1956 Plymouth made for export markets like India, Australia etc, This car may have been first registered here in 1957.
