BTW can clarify its model for me.
Most definitely a 1939 master, but the first stretch bodied four-door I have ever seen. Extremely rare. Had a 216 cubic inch in-line overhead valve six cylinder engine with babbited main bearings. You might confer with this site for identification purposes; http://www.hubcapcafe.com. A most useful site for American automobilia.

Re: Pics: Vintage & Classic cars in India

I remember someone once mentioning a vintage car lying in the Naaz Cinema Compound at Lamington Road, Bombay. Is this the car by any chance?

Sorry but the pic. owner has not allowed downloading/sharing of the pic.

Car looks like a Standard Avon to me.

The Opera House/Lamington Road area has been historically the automotive market for Bombay. In the lane are 2 important workshops - one is Fali Homi, been around for ages, specialising in classics (they recently spruced up the Bhogilal cars for Cartier). Opposite is NiKi garage, also now mainly catering to classics. Stanher, you will remember Niki garage's lovely green Mk 1 Herald, BRP registered.

The car indeed looks like an Avon - but I cannot pinpoint which one. I know of the following
  • Red and white, now red and black, MRW registered, in Pune
  • White, then red and black, then green and cream, now black and cream, BMY registered, with Dossa in Bombay
  • Light and dark blue, RJL registered, in Rajasthan
  • Light and dark green, MYX registered, in Mangalore.
This doesn't seem to be any of the above (unless the RJL car came to Bombay for work). Nice find.

There used to be a Hillman Minx in Bangalore - blue if I recollect. The Humber was a badge engineered version with leather and wood thrown in.

In fact, the Sceptre was an upscale model of the Humber marque from the Rootes Group and three generations were made between 1961-76.

It (Sceptre) also came with a diesel version. This car was based on the Rootes Arrow model .Chrysler took over the Rootes Group in 1965.Thereafter, Peugeot bought the brands from Chrysler in 1978 and renamed the Rootes cars as Talbot. This was when Chrysler was ailing and was almost on the verge of extinction. As we can remember, Mr Lee Iacocca, the CEO, was fired from Ford Motors by Henry Ford II and he joined Chrysler just then around then in 1978. He gave Chrysler a new synergy and made it again the no. 3 car maker in the world,in the early 1980's.
Back to Europe, Brand Talbot was abandoned by Peugeot in 1986.According to wikipedia, however, the model name Sceptre was used by Peugeot after 1990 for SRi versions of the Peugeot 205, 405 and 605.

This is the generation before the Arrow model. The Arrow model continued to be built for years in Iran

Thanks Ajmat. The Iranian brand was Peykan- will post its specs from the World Cars (Daily Express) Buyers Guide of the 1980's.
Yes, I verified the fact that the Arrow was made between 1966-1979, whereas the Sceptre was made between 1961 to 1976.

There should be a few here and there, especially in all versions (Humber, Hillman, Sunbeam, Singer etc)

There was one lovely daily driver in Pune, I would see an elderly gent use it - possibly he had it from new. It was sold to.... Bangalore! Gold and white.

The Humber Sceptre was always a rebadged Hillman Minx, whether this one or the Arrow model

Alfa Romeo in Mumbai

Wow, Edmund - Indeed worth getting lost

Hey - this probably won't qualify as a classic just yet. But in an Alfa-starved city, this indeed comes as a breath of fresh air. Saw this Alfa Romeo 75, in a by-lane in Fort.
The Bellissima probably belongs to an Australian who's driving across the country / continent / globe. The number plate says - 'Victoria on the move'
Any Alfa is a classic to me..
