Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

Article on a very interesting journey of the Hartlmaier expedition thru India and the Himalayas in 1935/36 in 3 DKWs . One two seater, one four seater and a Delivery Wagon. A total 0f 11000 miles not km. As the article is translated but lengthy and pictures speak a 1000 words. They even have a luncheon date with the Maharajah of Sikkim. The Auto Union country representative was one Mr Trump. The cars were escorted out of Mumbai to their onward journey on their own by the cars of WIAA, the German consulate and members of the German colony . Enjoy the read it’s fascinating

Cheers

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

Here is a 1932 petrol receipt for overlanders 'World Motorcycle Tourists Aukes & Hereveyer', billed via 'Automobile Resort', one of their later enterprises was Karfule (Karfule turns 80! Bombay's stunning art deco petrol pump)

Can experts find out more details on these travellers?

This astonishing travelogue created by the Ford Motor Company shows a trip across the world made by two intrepid men and their brand new 1958 Ford Fairline, across continental Europe and Asia -- a trip that would be virtually impossible today. The journey was part of the World Highways Expedition of 1957. The film starts in Dearborn, Michigan where two Danny Ames and Phil Remy depart on a trip around the world, through sixteen countries and 15,000 miles of road. It starts with a drive to New York and then departure aboard the ship SS New York to London, then to Paris by airplane. The real journey then begins from Switzerland, across the Alps to Portofino, Italy, Pisa, Venice and Rome. The trip then continues through Yugoslavia, Athens, Greece and Istanbul, Turkey. Now the trip enters an incredible phase, including a drive across Anatolia, Iran and the Hindu Kush, Afghanistan. In this section the Buddhas of Bamiyan are seen. The journey continues through Lahore, Pakistan, India, Thailand and Angkor Wat, Cambodia. The film ends with a visit to Saigon, Vietnam and a boat crossing to San Francisco and back to Dearborn, Michigan.

Re: Vintage Overlanding! Driving Cross-Country back in the day

In 1925 a Buick was driving around the world, going from dealer to dealer as a publicity exercise. In the month of February it passed through Bombay and made an appearance at dealer TR Pratt's facility.

A 1958 article talking of a 1930 Fiat 1100 that drove down to India from Turin. Any more pictures of the event?
