Hello Craig, like Awini said, there were plenty of 'em around. Some personal imports too!

That was the Holden Monaro, deep metallic blue colour, right? Was a '68/'69 I seem to remember. A beauty she was, I think she left town later! There were stories around that car, like she was burnt badly in a fire, and resurrected from that state, etc. Satish, the mech outside IIT either owned her, or did the resto job. Used to be parked at his place with the Barracuda - both were offered to me, and I was an idiot!

Btw, I also owned a few Holdens over the years, a Premier and a Kingswood. Subsequently, in the 80s an Aussie Ford LTD too! A friend also had the small Holden, based on the Isuzu Gemini and a neighbour had a Torana, ran into the ground and subsequently scrapped.

The Holden Coupe would have to me a Monaro. There were a few in Bombay too. Premnath the actor had a Red one. Also featured in one of his movies, i forget which one though. Just a few years ago one could see the Kingswood. The film fraternity had an affinity to them coz they were like a Chevy with a RHD. Old movies from the 90's would have them being bashed up in mindless car chases.

That could be a British one or an Australian one too. Lots of Falcons came to India and were mostly used by state dignitaries and governors. I remember the Governor of Maharashtra had a couple of Fords being used as state cars. Even the Chief Minister of Maharashtra (1981 or so i think) Mr. Babasaheb Bhonsale used to travel in a Silver Ford Granada. So also the Mumbai Police Commissioner Mr. Julio Riebero used to travel in the official Cp car which was a Maroon Ford Granada.

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

Since we are currently on Australian cars in general, and then Ford in particular, let me correct a few erroneous posts, so that it doesn't lead to mistaken knowledge for those who are less clued in, on this topic. Of course, there's always Google Baba for instant gratification, and expertise!

Ford Falcons were essentially produced in North America (US & Canada), Argentina and Australia - never in the UK! Maybe in S Africa also, but not sure.

I think the Argentinian production was set up later, and continued till much later, after North American production had wound up, and the brand discontinued. I could be wrong about the datelines though. The Australian Falcon of course continues till date, and is a very modern car today.

Ford Granadas were built in North America (US & Canada) and Europe, in the UK and Germany! If in any other country also, I'm not aware of...

The Granadas of America and Europe were like chalk and cheese!

Sell the cars = Make money. Rent out the parking = Make money. But in this situation, NO money!

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

To add to the above, Australian missions in India were not large enough to justify the large presence of Australian built cars in India.
Many cars were imported by others eligible to do so, who wanted right hand drive (RHD) vehicles, and wanted large cars, not the small European or Japanese cars. I had a Ford LTD which came from Australia, and it was imported by the Austrian Embassy into India. The car had about 15 owners before me, and with each change it may have come down from being a prestige car to being a taxi. It did not end up with moviewallahs.
These Australian cars were Holdens and Fords, various models. Most were 6 cylinder and automatic, 8 cylinders were much less as we were always worried about mileage. The same was the trend with American cars, and when these stopped being available in RHD folks shifted to Australia. Later when Australia started building smaller cars like the Holden Torana, few came in and now we see hardly any imports from there.
Major problem with these cars were the maintainance of the gearboxes, for my car I had to get kits and got her running.
Now there are hardly any collectable Australian cars around, they would have to be atleast 8 cylinder engined cars and should not have been trashed. That orange Monaro in Mumbai was a nice car, it was later almost abandoned on Altamont Road, and then someone took her to Pune and tried to build a horrible spacecraft? Can't make out, but now the car is ruined. Real Australian muscle cars were hardly imported, very few made it to India similar to American muscle cars, very few around.

About parking space, those poor cars are doomed to die. Some societies have rules that you must own a car to have a parking space, and maybe it will be needed after 10 years when a grand child is able to drive. So the place stays blocked. Sometimes there are property disputes, so really if the owner does not care to see the cars sink into the ground, and if he does not mind the ugly sight, what can be done. Yes, one can go to local authorities and complain about mosquito nuisance, maybe a notice will be issued.

BTW, this cream Ford Falcon or Fairmont once lived on Nepean Sea Road, it was being offered free with the purchase of another car, I now forget which.

Cheers harit

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

As of Australian cars, there was one 80's-90's Falcon lying around in Faridabad, on a service road near Escorts factory.
