Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

Here's a Ford Econoline which is lying around unattended in Andheri. A few years back this car was parked at Andheri, J.P. Road and was in very good condition. Maybe because of the Metro work going on and no place to park - this van has been dumped here. The windows were broken / rolled down so took a look at the interiors - the dashboard looks ok. There was a Gypsy hard top at the back so could not make out much.

Sorry I know my reply is way late as well! I'm not sure if I have the speedo of this car, I think I did salvage it but for somebody else to whom I sent a whole load of parts from this car itself then.

I was just imagining how glorious the Ford Cortina would have been looking in her days, I was wondering the rear view mirror has that button/clip in those days, by the way is the function of that button on the rear view mirror I still couldn't understand .

The owner of the caprice is a very good friend of mine. Let me have a word with him on what he plans to do with the car. Will update you guys accordingly. (I've had some good rides in it..Great car)

That mirror is called a day-and-night mirror.

It has two reflecting surfaces.
A highly reflective silvered surface and a less reflective unsilvered surface.
The little lever below the mirror, switches the two surfaces.

The highly reflective silvered surface works well during the day.
At night, bright headlamps of a vehicle following you, can be blindingly bright.
So you reduce the reflectivity of the mirror by switching over to the less reflective unsilvered glass surface.

This is typically achieved by tilting a mirrored prism, but other methods have been used too.

Hope this helps.

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

Ram is right ..its a day and night mirror....in daytime use the mirror is perpendicular like a regular mirror but at night if the glare from cars in the rear is too strong you can push the button down and it will angle the mirror away from perpendicular so you still see the cars but the glare is angled away from you.

This is how the simple day / night mirror works. Now you have electonic versions which have sensors and dim the glare when it it detected.

Hello Guys

Not sure if this car qualifies to be put in this thread (and also if someone has posted this earlier).

In any case, she is left to rot and I have seen her not moved from that location for over 3 months now. Seems like it was abandoned at this car sale guy who since left it to rust since no one wants it.

To me it certainly looks like a 80 Buick LeSabre from some Youtube videos but perhaps the experts will be able to confirm.

In any case, the car seemed to be in good shape (comparing to some others rusting in pieces). Gee! would it be one with a turbocharged V6!!!

This is a 1987 Buick Century.

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

it is indeed a 1988 model Buick which was messed up by the present owner.
He dieselised it and the auto transmission gave him several problems.
The electricals added his woes and he towed it to this present position.
My friend had offered him Rs.1.25 lakhs for this car 4 years ago in a much much better condition. But now it is best left alone

Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

That is sad that the vehicle is abandoned now. 1.25l would have been indeed a good value for the vehicle 4 years back! It is sad that the vehicle would rust its way to oblivion now...

RIP Buick....
