Rare Auto transmission. Pillar shift gears. Nice car and they command good price.

True, i guess this may be sold as a parts car too. I don't think a resto makes sense since a lotta bodywork is needed and the eng is not original.

Ask and thou shalt receive! See them here:

PS: Ravi, nice to know that you're familiar with the exact model names of Heralds (Mk III etc.! )
I know few people with even older memories who know these names correctly.

The ultra reliable Strich Acht

These "compact" Mercedes models were called the Strichacht (slash Eight), after the year they were introduced: 1968. They had timeless clean lines, but they were also known as the poor man's Mercedes.

Some of us here, were around, when they first showed up.

I was a 10 year old school boy in Chembur, Bombay, when the Strichacht was introduced as a brand new model.
Chembur was the happening residence of the Hindi film industry and ostensibly, the first owners were film stars. Shammi Kapoor and Babita shot a couple of scenes for a future movie, "Tumse achchha kaun hai" in my school premises. That was when I first got to see this new smaller-than-ever-before Mercedes.

Two colors that especially caught my fancy were the deep blue ( Midnight Blue-DB904 ) and the brick red ( Signalrot-DB568 ).

Just for comparison, the entire production of Mercedes cars from World War Two until 1968 was just 20 lakh.

And 20 lakh strich Achts were made !!!
So, there's really nothing rare about the W114/W115 cars.

There is a 240D Strichacht in the Daimler Benz museum in Stuttgart
which has driven a record 46 lakh km from 1976 to 2004.
Its engine was replaced twice.

What more proof do we need of a car's reliability ?
Wrote about it here, two years ago.
