The Lavasa drive was a vintage drive event for me after a long time. Since I have been tried up in the last few months this was a good change, but there was no opportunity to make proper preparations. And I promptly paid for it.
The Lancia just refused to start, and so it could not take part. As it was entered, there was a photo in the local news announcing the event. Yet I took three cars to help increase the numbers, the Packard, the Sunbeam and the Merc 350SE. By some miracle all three cars reached Lavasa on their own power. The Packard had no issues, the Sunbeam minor, but the Merc 350 was firing on lesser number of cylinders at the fag end. The miracle was in that some unseen hand must have pushed the Merc up the ghats
We reached Lavasa at around 2PM, had lunch and then checked in. Should have rested a bit, but we went down to the promenade and see what was happening.
The cars were displayed close to the sea shore, and seating was arranged for the public and ourselves. For the evening a Jazz music program was arranged.
The band was excellent, the music was enjoyable. This went on for a while, there were plenty of photo ops, a celebrity guest, later we went for a walk along the promenade and checked the local milk bar.
Here we saw two 1959 Chevy’s together, and I noted that as the sedan is fitted with the continental kit, the beautiful striking lines of the wings meeting at the center get hidden.
A water fountain display went on for some time simultaneously, with interesting arrangements. After that was dinner, followed by some small talk where I kept nodding off, just too tired.
The cars were kept behind ropes for the public not to get too close, sometimes they still managed to do that.
My Packard suddenly became a Clipper 1946, where the Packard Clipper 1946 actually got too close to the ditch at Airoli, maybe almost fell into it? (See detailed meaning of ditch below, I think no 2 applies)
The next day after breakfast we checked out, went to our cars, gathered for a presentation on Lavasa and drove off.
Here the Merc 350SE did not climb the slope from the promenade, and wisely we decided to put her on the flatbed. The Packard did go down well, almost too well but there were no problems.
The Sunbeam also reached Holiday Inn, but after lunch the water pump gave way. As it was running and we gave two mechanics a lift, they gave us confidence and we drove all the way reaching Mankhurd when we decided to get her towed for the last leg. The water pump was shot and no water was retained. On the way there was another time waster, we took a detour via Palm Beach Road because of traffic. The Sunbeam ran out of gas, the Packard came valiantly to the rescue, and shortly thereafter herself ran out of gas. The Sunbeam then reached a pump and all was managed. Finally reached home exactly at 12.00 midnight, and then went out for dinner. On this trip my little niece had come along and she had her fun, slept only during the last legs of the drive.
Hopefully we will see this event again next year and we should have a lot of fun.
