Re: Restrictions lifted on the import of Pre-1950 cars into India

Has anyone tried importing a ford gpw through this scheme? Do I need IEC for this? What will be the duty and registration charges for this kind of vehicle?

Re: Restrictions lifted on the import of Pre-1950 cars into India

whats the point of opening up the channel of import if the import duty is sill 200% plus !
it makes no sense to import these vehicles to India.

Posted this in the Beyond borders thread, but posting here as well, with the hope if this can somehow be forwarded to our Government too.

Quote:
Pakistan to charge import duty for pre-1968 cars at flat USD 5000.

Re: Restrictions lifted on the import of Pre-1950 cars into India

Not directly related to car IMPORTS but an interesting Mumbai High Court matter concerning FORD CARS in 1937
https://indiankanoon.org/doc/1998745/

EXCERPTS:
1. The appellants are the Ford Motor Company of India, Limited. They import Ford motor vehicles into India from Canada, and the questions raised by this appeal relate to the amount of customs duty payable upon 256 Ford motor cars consigned to the appellants which arrived in Bombay by the SS. Algic on, or about January, 1929.

4. The 256 Ford motor cars [Model A Vehicles] which arrived by the SS, Algic in January, 1929, were assessed to customs duty by the Collector of Customs upon the view that Clause (a) of Section 30 applied to the case, and that the price charged by the appellants to the distributors, excluding therefrom the allowance of Rs. 13-8-0, was such a wholesale cash price as is specified therein.

Re: Restrictions lifted on the import of Pre-1950 cars into India

Import duty works out to approx 256% on CIF (Cost + Insurance+ Freight) value , though Basic customs duty is 125% , then 10% cess and IGST 28% and additional duty another 20% but all put togeather works out to about 256% of assessed value as assessed by customs.
