re: Third Cartier Concours d'Elegance: Feb 2013 in Mumbai (PICS on Page 19)

Karl, Buicks, even in the fourties were being made in the GM plant in Sewri. Our 54 Dodge however was made in Canada and sold here as a completely built unit. In fact,we had booked the new model( 1955) but when Dad went to take delivery, he was persuaded by the salesman to buy the 54 @ Rs Fourteen thousand, full tank of fuel included, as this was the last Dodge to come in as a CBU, the 55 being assembled here. The 54 is a delightful car and Dad had no regrets. The late Nani Palkhiwala had a stunning 55 in immaculate condition. When he passed on the car for a short while was with his nephew Homi Ranina, subsequently sold. This particular 55 dodge was in original paint and leather. I hope the same car comes to Cartier. Actually I was quite amazed that our 54 sedan got an invite. As Harit says, and without meaning to sound arrogant, they could have had their pick. Wasif, I dont have any pictures to post of the dodge, and the car is quite shabby.with barely a month to go I am not inclined to do a rush job, so she will appear as is.

I now recollect you telling me about your Dodge. However I used to think the sedans were assembled here, and cabrios were imported, and hence LHD

If I'm not mistaken (and of late I tend be!), Nani Palkhiwala's Kingsway was the large fin model, (1956?), and today with Fang? He had given it an overcoat in the 1990s, but the interior is still original. Unfortunately that car is not attending, but his restored small fin model (1955?) is attending.

Karl, In 54 they came as CBU's. Since dad himself bought the car , I speak with assurance. NANI'S DODGE WAS THE SMALL FIN 55. Maye that is the car fang has entered??Does it have a deep brownish maroon leather interior? The RC book will tell if it is the car I mean. How far has the work on your Landmaster progressed? By the way, the engine colour used to be a non descript greyish green . At least that was the engine colour on ours, also bought brand new.

After a long hiatus , Tweety flew by again with the news of a lovely Studebaker of the fifties belonging to a gentleman in Bombay being invited. Another pleasing Buick limo of the early fourties, belonging to a gentleman from Delhi also is selected and being brought up to show worthy standards. A 1947 Chrysler windsor limo from Bombay, belonging to a family connected with the Indian Automobile scene since independence, as well as a delightful 1946/47 Dodge convertible are some of the other cars selected and being spruced up. Looks like we are going to see a lot of american metal this time.

True that, Bulldogji! And she's coming along quite nicely, in maroon!

Hi Prabal, I agree. The Buick is shaping up nicely, and I am given to understand she may be driven down to Bombay. that would really be a nice way to enjoy the car and TRAVEL IN STYLE, the theme of the show.

Today and tomorrow, Calcutta will see a large number of vintage and classic beauties on the roads. Some will continue their journey to Bombay for the Cartier show. Without exception, the cars coming are well restored, in some cases I would venture to say ressurected. But as far as ressurection goes, the bombay Hudson, the Calcutta Minerva, and a few others which shall remain unnamed at the juncture, will see some close competion.

Over the last few months I think most workshops and owners who specialise in vintage and classic cars have been putting up a brave front in regards to completing their projects for this grand show. Some adequately prepared and have their projects ready & well in time to have them driven and all things tested. Calcutta did see three cars appearing for the show ready and participate also for the last weeks statesman rally. Mainly being the Minerva , Rolls 20 hp and the MGA.

With permission I am posting the picture of the 1923 Rolls Royce 20 HP roadster of Shrivardhan Kanoria. A magnificent machine and a fantastic restoration which I am sure the photographs don't do any justice to the actual vehicle. Also an image of the MG A looking like a million bucks.

Wishing him all the best for the show and hopefully get a glimpse of the car once in Bombay.

Cheers

Sure a million bucks, and Cartier worthy

Every owner has the right to do with his car as he wishes, but I would have kept the grill more original. See picture taken from http://carsinpedia.com/car_day_archi...ils.php?id=340

Cheers harit

You may be right, but then these look like this, picture taken from http://www.motorcar.com/mg/

The grill in the red car looks like from a mosquito net. Check it out again. There is enough time to correct the grill and upset the roadster prize

Cheers harit

Here are the Humber and Chevy Fleetmaster which will make their appearance at Cartier. I understand that these cars will have some of the extra fittings removed for the show. The Humber for example will loose the Boa Horn and white wall tyres for the show.

re: Third Cartier Concours d'Elegance: Feb 2013 in Mumbai (PICS on Page 19)

The Chevy looks great. I doubt that the colours were a factory standard and the after market head light chrome trim I've never seen before and cheapen the car. The abundance of "Club Badges" seems to be a plague that has spread from Kolkata to the rest of the country.

When I was a judge at The Statesman Rally a few years ago they disturbed me greatly and my position was if they couldn't show proof that they had either come with the car and if the owners were not members of the various Clubs, points should be deducted. Even then, in most cases, they detracted from the beauty of the car. My motto is "Less is More"

The Humber is quite handsome, the interior very impressive! Again too many club badges, the GB on the back, not original, and the white colour feels out of place for a car of this caliber. All said and done, I'd love to have it parked in my garage!
