Re: Vikram Pendse's collection

Thanks Veldeep for initiating this.

Some more info after having a word with Vikram Pendse about the history/ background of this hobby yielded follwing info. Thought of sharing this with everyone interested -

The exhibition which has 80 antique bicycles from across the world that are in working condition, which have been duly restored by Pendse who owns Diamond Vintage bicycles. The exhibition has a collection of bicycles from the road bike to tricycles for grownups and from folding bicycles to tandem cycles.

“In building this collection, my primary consideration to collect as many bicycles, accessories, as much information and photographs as possible over the last few years,” says Vikram Pendse.

“I find it interesting to see the development of bicycles over a period of time. It is fascinating to note how different wheel sizes, spokes, chassis and forks designs, were developed. Also the variations in material, metallurgy, gear hubs, suspensions, brakes and so on were cleverly developed over the years. Collecting these bicycles gives me the satisfaction of preserving and documenting a part of history. This collection has technological, educational and anthropological value. It reflects our own transport history- After all these good old bicycles are the ancestors of all our modern vehicles!” adds Vikram.

Most of these vintage bicycles have been completely restored from their scrap condition. All the parts have been painstakingly collected or handcrafted. Some have been handed over by the cycle owners or their children.

All these Bicycles have been restored with the help of Mr. Pandurang Gaikwad, who is a veteran cyclist himself. He has participated in the Mumbai Pune race for 15 years in a row. He has also participated in the Mumbai, Goa cycle race, represented Maharashtra in the South Asian Cycling competition and other national and international cycling events.

“It is a great pleasure to restore an old bicycle to its old glory. The fittings and specialties of each bike is peculiar and all parts are harmonized and blended in a perfect whole. The pleasure of riding a vintage bicycle is worth every effort taken,” says Gaikwad

Re: Vikram Pendse's collection

Update: Vikram is now busy building a permanent home for his collection which includes, besides bicycles/tricycles, antique irons, typewriters, bottles, hip flasks, bells, wick lamps etc. Yesterday I saw an iron which has a small kerosene container attached. You fire up the wick which in turn heats up the iron! Mind blowing!

Also spotted this beauty yesterday at his Garage.

A couple of comments:

A] Side Wall Engine- It should be 'Side Valve' Engine.

B] Loved seeing a BYF registered car after ages! BYF would be a Poona number- circa 1947ish to the first half of 1954.

Unfortunately no. The infrastructure work is still going on (carpenters, lights etc) and I had paid an unofficial visit as a friend.

I will definitely update this thread once it is officially opened.

LOL! I stand corrected. Thanks Fintail!
I am not an auto nerd (hell I did not even know diesels do not have spark plugs for many many years). When I heard the info from Vikram I thought "Hmm looks like the engine is mounted near a side wall under the bonnet instead of being placed centrally". Made perfect logical sense to me that time!

Mechanics for RD 350/RX in Pune

Need suggestions for reliable mechanic/s for especially Rajdoot-Yamaha RD350 in Pune preferably based on the following:

- Personal experience of getting the bike serviced/ and not hear-say
- CB Points setting experience
- Genuine mechanic and not a parts replacer engaged in swapping parts from one bike to another
- Trustworthy considering scarcity of spares
- Working within timelines as old/vintage bikes tend to lie around garages as they are usually not regular commute bikes
- Location and contact details

Many of our RD group members are also seeking the information, appreciate support in this regard.

You can check with Vikram Pendse, who is the owner of Diamond Motorcycles in Sahawas Society, Pune. When I used to get my Splendor serviced from him (no complaints about his work), I sometimes saw the odd Yamaha in his garage. His number is 9890020901.

As an aside, he also owns and maintains a vintage cycle museum.

Disclaimer: Other than being a satisfied ex-customer, I have absolutely no affiliation of any sort with him. So please do your own due diligence before giving your bike to him.
