Tyre upsize issues with Innova

Last Saturday I went for tyre change and the dealer recommended to upsize the tyres to Yokohama C drive 225 60 R15. Now I am facing steering wheel vibration issue at speed from 120 Kmph. I went to the dealer again and he rebalanced only front two wheels. The issue still persists. He asked me to get bearings and suspension checked by SC. Today I went to Toyota SC and the technician straight away asked me why did I upsize the tyres. It is not recommended!!!!!! Two techs took trial and confirmed that it is not the issue with bearings or suspension. I've to put back normal size tyres. Now I am in a soup!!!!!!
What should I do?

Re: Tyre upsize issues with Innova

I am using the same size and brand on my Innova from last 2 yrs and drop till 130+ but never had any issue. I guess you need to check with some good wheel balancing and alignment shop in your area. Don't worry about tyre upsize, it right one and many in this forum using the same.

Re: Tyre upsize issues with Innova

Your Toyota SC is talking crap. Ive had 225/60 R15 on my Innova for 40k kms and gone to speeds higher than you mentioned without any vibrations. Get balancing done from another shop.

Re: Tyre upsize issues with Innova

dineshnan isn't 225/55-16 the right upsize for the Innova ? Simply go to another tire shop and get your wheels balanced. If the problem has come up only after the tire upgrade I cant think of anything else other than an unbalanced wheel.

Re: Tyre upsize issues with Innova

This reader has not mentioned the mileage his innova has covered.It is very rare that up sizing causes shimmy wheel.the front two tyres requires proper balancing.I think it will solve vibration.

Stock is 205/65 so the upsize is 225/60 which is the perfect upsize.

Re: Tyre upsize issues with Innova

I have had 225/60R15 Michelin on my Innova for the last 3.5 yrs & ran 55K - no issues at all. Even - been at 165 - no vibrations & flies like a feather. This is purely got to do with other than the tyre size.

It could be because of any of the following;

* It could be lug nuts - see if they are tight & fastned properly on all tires.
* Wheel balancing/ alignment & tyre pressure
* Faulty Steering Dampers
* If the wheel shakes while braking - could be due to warped brake rotors & if it during normal driving - it could be bent rim/ loose suspension components

It's best to take your Innova to another technician & check throughly. it could be as simple as the nuts are not fastned properly!! Remember computer is not booting because the power chord is not connected to the socket!!

Hope this is useful & let us know if things change & what was the real reason!

Re: Tyre upsize issues with Innova

You guessed it right guys. Upsizing was not the issue at all. I took the car from Wasan Toyota SC Chembur and straight away drove to old fashioned wheel balancing guy in Nerul (he does Wheel alignment manually). After correct wheel balancing on all four tyres we took the trial and pump it up to 140 Kmph without any wobbling issues.
Well, the reason he told me was that most wheel balancing guys keep 10-15 gms behind. They don't do it accurately. I believe him now.
The problem is resolved.
Thanks for the inputs.

Re: Tyre upsize issues with Innova

Good to know that it is sorted out. I have the same size (225/60R15) and brand (c.drive) for last 23k kms on my Innova and never faced any issues.

Grip will improve after "run in" of 1000 kms or so and the wet grip will improve much more significantly, so much so that I find it astonishing sometimes.

Re: Tyre upsize issues with Innova

Any impact on FE. How did you go about tyre rotation since these are asymmetric design?

My FE is around 11 kmpl in city with not too much traffic and a rather heavy foot on the acclerator.

Rotation is an issue for "Directional" tires. These are "Asymmetric" and not "directional". So once correctly mounted on the rim (will have an "Outside" and "Inside" mark), can be pretty much used on any wheel in the car.

Thanks a lot for this information. I was looking for this desperately. I took delivery of my second Innova (2012 VX 8 seater, D4D) from Nandi Toyota @ Kanakapura Road, Bangalore and got the tyres exchanged for C-Drives immediately on delivery. Have done 3K KMs in 3 months and these tyres are fantastic, miles above the stock BridgeStones. The only worry I had was on the rotation of the tyres and this answered it. Thank you!

Good !

Just for your reference !

I have the biggest tyre showroom here at TVM who advertises that 'no one can balance wheel better than them' do things wrongly.

You meant to say that they they had extra weight on one tyre?

Hi

Flipping the tyre inside out is not possible otherwise tyre rotation is done naturally on these tyres every 5000 Km. Front to back in line and Cross way is done normally.

@Jkdas

No there is not any extra weight on any of the tyres. It is just that the wheel balancing was done accurately.

Re: Tyre upsize issues with Innova

My Innova's yokohama C drive needs replacement now. Running more than 35K. First >20K, no puncture at all!! Smooth drive etc. But now getting frequent punctures. Also tread looks worn out. Toyota showroom guys asking me to replace. Local mechanic says I could easily pass this rainy season but I am bit worried about punctures!!

Anyways, I would like to know approximate current prices for tyre 225/60 R15 by various brands.

I am more inclined towards Bridgestone Turanza ER60. Any suggestions are welcome!
