re: Hyundai Getz : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hi all,
i had checked out a franchisee of changemytyre here in chennai! These guys seem to favour Falkens, although they do stock Michelins and Yokohamas..! A couple of points i needed to get clarified!

- The sales guy said, the tyre change, if i were to move to 175/70R13 over the stock 155/80R13, is a -0.5%. Is the negative % change ok/advisable..!

- They said Falkens are the only brand that gives 3 (another dealer said 5) years replacement warranty!

So, my query is, are Falkens ok to go for?! and, if Falkens are not suggested, i might go for Michelin XM2 (if the negative % change on the 175 isnt an issue), or Yokohama Earth 1 (if i have to stick to 155s)..

Any thoughts/suggestions would be great!!

Thanks!
Sudersan

Hyundai sold the Getz with the following tire sizes:
  • 155/80R13 for the GL/GLE variants
  • 175/70R13 for the GLS variant
  • 175/65R14 for the GLX variant

You can safely switch to 175/70R13 since it is a size that Hyundai themselves sold. The variance is <1% and that will cause no problems at all.

You're doing the right thing by switching to the 175 mm wide tire, you will get better grip and control.

I bought my Getz second-hand, and although it was a GLE, the previous owner had switched to 175/70R13 tires, and I was fully happy with its feel & performance. Two years ago, when replacing the tires, I moved to 175/65R14 tires on alloys, and that felt even better.

I'm not an expert on tire brands, so I'll leave that question to those experienced.

re: Hyundai Getz : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

i changed the tyres of the getz.. changed it to 175/70R13, Continental CC5s!
Ironically, i got it changed at the xl tyre point in velachery (the one i suggested people avoid!)! Guess i have to eat my hat!

True, the guy does stock older tyres, but unlike a few other dealers, he did take the effort to source 0315 tyres since i insisted on 2015 tyres!

as for the feel of the tyres, i guess am still a novice when it comes to driving, more so in figuring out the finer details..! i suppose i would take a bit longer to figure out the tyre and its qualities..! fingers crossed!!

thanks all for your suggestions!!

My getz is now due for tyre upgrade. I am planning for 175/70/R13, one size up from stock 155/80/R13. It will be interesting to know performance of continental vs michelin?

Hey yes, i did upgrade getz tyres to michelin XM2. Total cost 16450/- for all the 4 tyres 175/60R13. Drove about 5000 kms already and totally satisfied with the performance. Even my father is happy the way they grip with the road. He is now more confident and does not hesitate to drive at triple digit speeds, thanks to exceptional NVH levels. Also one size up is strongly recommended, it gives more planted ride. The brakes also feels more powerful now. I totally recommend it.

Did you upgrade to 175/65 R14 or 175/70 R13? Because on Michelin's website, I cannot see XM2 in 175/60 R13 like you have mentioned.

Re: Hyundai Getz : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hey guys,

my Getz runs on Hankook 205 50 R15 as its a remapped car and wheel spins are crazy with stock tyres. One of the tyres got badly punctured and I've been told it cannot be repaired. Now, I'm thinking I'll replace all four as they don't have much life left in them. I want to downsize to improve ride quality. Can you please suggest the current size ( one size down from present ) and a good brand I can go for? Thanks alot guys!

To the best of my knowledge, Hyundai themselves have equipped the international Getz cars with 175/65 R14 (Australia). In India with the bad roads I'd say they got the specifications spot on again with 175/70 R13. The 205/50 R15 would certainly become uncomfortable for any kind of driving and is overkill in my view. If you plan on keeping the 15" wheels then your choice is limited to one size which Europeans generally upgrade to/get factory option for the Getz :

185/55 R15

I'm not sure if this specification is available in India, my Getz runs on stock size of 175. I'd say if the need is to get more sidewall height then the rims may have to be changed to a 14 (185/65). I'm quoting only stock specifications to be on the safer side as any guesses outside of that is a risk at best. I'm very happy with Yokohama Earth-1's and I suppose for more comfort Continental or Michelin would be fine too. Mainly in this situation the wafer-thin sidewall is giving troubles so a 1-size down move to 195/50 R15 is pointless. You could try a 195/55 R 15 but a 5 mm increase may not be enough and whether it'll scrape the well I have no idea. For comfort 65-70 sidewall is optimum specially for Bangalore with the potholes and cable pits.

Edit : is it a petrol or diesel variant?

Hey man, thanks a lot. So, I guess 195 55 15 might be a good choice, on the other hand I could also just go ahead and buy one tyre of the current size and stick with it until all four need to be changed. A little confused about the decision really.

Its the diesel crdi engine varient, its run 1,21,000 km and I just got the turbo rebuilt, now it pulls like a monster on the highways. But you are right, ride quality went out the window long ago. I can feel each and every pothole on the road, the only thing that makes up for it is the brutal acceleration.

Re: Hyundai Getz : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hi all.. I have an 08 Getz 1.3 that has done about 50K kilometres. I was planning to sell it till I realized that it would be a monumental mistake. So I'm going about fixing all and sundry on it now.
It runs on the stock 175/70/R13 tyres: 2x Stock tyres (rear) + 2xDuraplus (front). I'm going to get all of them changed this week. I was looking at the Michelin XM2 / Bridgestone B290/Goodyear Duraplus - and I have honed in on the B290's. Wondering if I've made the right choice or have I overlooked any other tyre.

My considerations (in order of priority) are:
1 - Braking performance (dry + wet)
2 - Durability on the horrible Indian roads
3 - other factors can take a hit for the 2 above

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Duraplus is a straight reject.. Goodyears do not have that magic in them anymore and I'm saying it by personal experience. They offer at best neutral to hard feel with a perhaps slightly longer life (Duraplus). Bridgestone makes "good" tyres but from what I learnt when shopping, they also give a hard feel and not so much of the cushioning experience of soft/intermediate compound tyres. The Turanzas/Potenzas are the only good ones from Bridgestone.

Like handling, getting a tyre spot on is impossible - if its soft/intermediate compound it'll grip ferociously in dry/wet. Grip is also dependent on tyre tread design which is great when made by Michelin, Continental or Yokohama. Durability is a gamble 1/10 times.. even the most rugged tyre can get punctured or blow up while a soft tyre can cross 50k kms with ease. Do ask the shopwala as well but as far as my suggestion goes -

1) For superb grip and ride (soft) but slightly lower life - XM2 (some tyres have crossed 40-50k with ease)
2) For a perfect mix of ride, handling and ruggedness (intermediate)- Yokohama Earth 1 (been personally using it on the Getz for 10k kms, simply awesome is my opinion.. pristine condition as of now)
3) For sheer durability and acceptable grip and feel - Duraplus (hard compound)

Once again a perfect tyre is always personal opinion.. some like a hard ride while some don't. Discuss further with the shop and zero in. While all the above options should prove themselves rugged enough to cross another 50k, sometimes any tyre can get damaged and that's a small gamble we all have to take.

Re: Hyundai Getz : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Thanks Dark Knight. I will look for the Yokohama Earth 1.
Are you running the stock size or have you upsized?
