Guys,

Get real. Have any of you guys tried it out or are just commenting. Keep both scenarios the same the diff will not be greater than 1kmpl irrespective of engine size.

Viper

heh heh can't help but smirk at these figures of 2.5 and 4, dunno where you guys get such absurd ideas from. The diff as viper has so rightly said will not be beyond 1 kmpl at the most if it does happen.

Lots of opinions but no-one with real information it appears.
Upgrade in theory should affect FE since there is more friction due to wider tyre area in contact with the road.
I was looking through my log for the Baleno, where I used the tube-type 165/80R13 for the first 20,000km, and then tubeless 185/70R13 for the last 10,000 km. I cannot see any consistent impact on FE, the figures are more or less the same. Always measured tank-full to tank-full.
So I would say, unless you're participating in some sort of mileage challenge race, don't lose any sleep over the FE.

In the example given by Mohitd, though, it appears he will end up changing the rolling radius of his wheels, increasing it by around 2 per cent. This may cause fouling problems, and more importantly the speedometer will no longer read correctly. He may be better advised to use 175/70/13 instead.

This popular conception is a bit wrong.

The proposed upsize envisages an increase of less than 2 per cent in the rolling radius. Therefore the total area in contact with the road will be more or less same and NOT increase. While the width of contact will increase because the tyres are wider, the length of contact will reduce, keeping the area in contact more or less similar.

I'm saying the same thing. That is why I said "in theory" it should affect the FE, but my experience does not support this theory.
But Sudipto, why should the length of the contact reduce?

Sorry for the late response. Check this out please for the explanation with diagram. Car Bibles : The Wheel and Tire Bible Page 1 of 2 the explanation is given on page 2 I think. This is also a brilliant website and explains every damn detail about a tyre. Best thing about the site is the person doesn't have any vested interest in promoting any product.

Thanks Sudipto. I had seen that site earlier but had never seen the wealth of detail there is in it.

I have a getz which comes with stock tyres 155/80/13.I am thinking of upgrading to 185/60/14.Is it a good upsize or should i go with 175/65/14?
Thinking of the ES 100 in 185/60/14.

Stick with 175/70-13, Sufficient for Getz P IMO.
Michelin XM1 and Yokohama A drives are best tire options available in that size.

Any particular disadvantages of going for 185/60/14 or for the matter even 175/65/14 as i am keen on getting 14 inch alloys.

Guys Im thinking of going for 175/65/14 but the maximum rim size it can accommodate is 5.5 so are alloys in the size 14x5.5 available?
Suggestion please.

looking at the thread title, i cant but help wonder, Arent you gonna upsize your left tyres too :p

Budget restrains so upgrading only the right tires lol:
just kidding, i didn't create the thread.

Im trying to upsize my Getz from the stock 155/80 R13 GoodYear GT3 to 14". I have outsoured 14" swift VXI rims and i'm trying to get 185/70 R14 tyres now. (I know this is not the correct upsize - I need more sidewall for ride quality).

I just need the gurus to tell me if this profile will foul or scrap on the Getz.

Go in for 185/65 R14, 70 might scrape.
