Nikhil, a query - Have you done some study / analysis / observation regarding when shimmy starts on a vehicle (due to lack of wheel balancing / fallen weights)? I mean, say a 20g fallen weight doesn't show up easily whereas a 50g weight starts showing up symptoms immediately. I know the speed at which this occurs will be different for different setups but still curious to know.

Hi Nikhil,

I own a Swift VXI, my rear left tyre had uneven torn out with tread wearing more on the outside. MASS said it is bearing issue and changed the bearing and put stepney which was in good shape in rear left. That tyre too met the same fate. Then I did a alignment check at a tyre house couple of days back.
The report said Rear Toe as below,
Rear Toe Left -- 2.3 mm
Right -- 3.7 mm
Total -- 6.0 mm
They said it is due to some beam/chasis problem and asked to check at MASS showing the report.
Do you have pointers here?

Can anyone post alignment report of your Maruti Swift here for reference. I did not get any suggestions for my previous posts, hence would like to know what would be the optimal rear toe reading for swift. Alternately you can also PM me your report.

Hi,

I heard from a tyre shop that readings in alignment report can be either in degrees or in mm. Mostly western countries use degree notation and here we use mm for the readings.
Can anyone provide more information on this aspect?

Dinesh, absolutely right. It doesnt make any difference. A good 3D wheel alignment machine (like John Bean or Hunter) will show the standard specs in mm or degrees depending on how it has been set up.

As long as the AFTER readings are within the tolerance zone, you dont need to worry about whether they are in mm or degrees.

Further update on the issue posted by me earlier in this thread. I had changed both rear wheel spindles at MASS. Did an alignment check post this change and the rear toe reading has come down. Now the total toe reading in the rear is 2.0 mm. Before spindle replacement it was 6.0 mm. Tyre shop guys say now the value is fine and the tyre should not get uneven wear.
Will post the latest alignment report as soon as I get it scanned.

That report is incomplete. The Specified values shouldnt be blank for the rear toe. There should be some number there to which you can compare the before and after readings.

Does the change in the wheel diameter affects the wheel alignment(Alignment is of Hub).When ever I go for alignment, they punch in the car name and alignment is done on the basis of default specifications. In the report the rim diameter is mentioned as 14", instead it's 15". Won't the sensors be affected due to change in the diameter?Will it affect the Toe and Camber?

No. It wont matter. The wheel size has no relation to the readings you see on the machine. Alignment can be done without the wheel also. It has absolutely no relation.
