re: Fiat Punto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Are these really 205s? don't mind, but they don't look as wide

In my company I have a punto EP with 195/60R15 wheels and a figo with off market wheels with 195/55R15. But the figo tyres look way braoder than the punto tyres. I think its the overall shape of the car that makes the wheel look big or small.

Of course yours being 90hp power drop will be negligible.
The reason why some BHPians are suggesting 195s are mine is 69hp and drop in power would be prominent. (This is what I have understood from their suggestions)

As I have said earlier, Personally its a question of mind-over-matter for me. If the photos that you have put is how my car will look with 205s, I'll most probably go for 205s. When I physically see them, If the 205s look better on my car, I'm ready to forego a little power drop.

Everytime I see this thread, I feel happy to be part of this community which helps its members to get the maximum out of their vehicles with their sincere suggestions.

The Figo's wheels (not tyre, the wheel) will be wider. That's why the same 195 tyres look fatter.

Remember, quality of rubber is more important than how thick it is. High quality 195 patch tyres are all that the Punto needs; 205 will definitely bog the car down more. Plus, the heavy steering will become even firmer in the city. The Punto is such a fantastic handler that I doubt any of you will ever need the extra grip provided by 10 mm more rubber anyways.

Absolutely GTO. The quality of rubber does make a lot of difference. Since the car in question is 1.2 litre engine developing 69 PS, I think the power drop may get a bit annoying after some usage.
+1 to the point on the steering feel. Boy it definitely does get a bit heavy with fat tyres.

re: Fiat Punto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

@hemanth.anand, fellow TBHPian epicenter.rulez (Mandeep) has 205 profile tires in his GP; he's driving his car on an almost "24x7" basis so you can ask him also. However, his car is a 1.3 FGT with Pete's TB.

I'd stick with 195 when my car needs replacement. However she's clocked only 10600 kms till this evening.

re: Fiat Punto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Finally the tyres have been upgraded.
After some thought and also the stock availability, it is finally Yokohama AVS ES100 205/60 R15 95H. Details in my ownership thread.

re: Fiat Punto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Guys, Is it possible to fit 195/65 R15 tires(the ones on my Laura) on Punto. Since the tires on Punto are almost gone, i was thinking of shifting the tires from Laura onto Punto and get wider Yokohama db for Laura.

re: Fiat Punto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

It depends on the wheel diameter on your punto.
When both the rim dia and tyre dia are 15", you can fit it without any problems.
Punto EP OE tyres are 195/60 R15. 195/65 will only be slightly larger in diameter.

Since your punto is emotion pack and it comes with 15" wheels It is possible.

Anshuman, avoid 195/65/R15 as it's too tall a tyre for the Punto wheel arches.

I have heard the T-Jet's taller tires fit without any problems in the existing Punto.

re: Fiat Punto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Well, I bought my Punto E-Pack in Jul 2010. Have clocked 19000 km already. So far, I have been running the stock Goodyear GT3s (195/60 R15), as I did not have money left to spend on tyres. However, now 2 of my tyres have a sidewall puncture. I have put the worst one as the spare in the boot. However, today, for some reason on the Mumbai-Pune expressway, I found the car's stability a tad bit suspect. The car was pulling towards the "injured" tyre at around 140 kmph. However, when I checked the pressure at the pump, it was 30 psi in all tyres. But I think it is time for a change of tyres. I love the stock alloys, so they stay put.

I stay at Grant Road in Mumbai, so the shops in the Opera House area are pretty close. Any particular shop recommended and do we get a discount if we mention t-bhp?

I am confused between 205/55 R15s and 195/60 R15s. Also, not sure which exact tyre to go for, as I am a complete amateur in this respect. Since I work in Pune, which has a lot of under-construction roads, I need a tyre with a strong sidewall. Decent grip and reduced road noise are also essential. My usage pattern involves a running of 70% highway and 30% city roads with the weekend high speed expressway trip thrown in.

re: Fiat Punto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Since you need a strong sidewall, 195/60 R15 is the obvious choice. Go in for the Conti CPC2 or the Yoko C drive. However, the C drive is slightly softer than the CPC2.

re: Fiat Punto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Thanks, Nikhil. Conti CPC2 seems to be the universal recommendation. Does it have less tyre noise? What abt Michelin Primacy LC? I was reading the thread on that one and it seems to be pretty good.

@ms001: Goodyear? Are those good? I am asking because I have Goodyear GT3s as stock and they are frankly, useless!

re: Fiat Punto : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Primacy LC is superb but it has a soft sidewall.... If you dont mind the risk and the price, go for it.

Ah no! Soft sidewalls are a no no in Pune! Looks like the CPC2s are it for me. Thanks for the advice, Nikhil.
