I respect your opinion, but I beg to differ.

In my experience, (one car, two different sets of tyres, same pressures as checked with the same pressure gauge which is well calibrated), I found the Michelins to offer a much smoother ride.

I think, you feel the BS are better because you are using them on 2 different cars. Ideally, you should try them on the same car to compare them.

I'm talking about a friend's Lancer. 195/60 R14. Had RE 88s which got worn and I suggested the BS ER 60 based on this thread. Until then, I've never had personal experience with the ER 60. He bought the tyres. They were way better than the RE 88s, but I felt the comfort could have been better.

He's a close friend and I went for a couple of long drives with him. I tried playing around with the pressures, but I always felt they were not as comfortable as claimed in this thread.

Then for some reason, he wanted to change it to Michelins. I told him he's being a jackass as he wouldnt get any value for his less than 1k old ER 60s. He insisted and went in for XM1+s. I immediately found a big improvement in comfort.

The ER 60 is not bad at all, but outright ride comfort the XM1+ is hard to beat.

Bottle also complained that the XM!+ is a little harsh. Well, in his case, he went for a wrong size. From 175/65 R14 to 185/60 R14. It's plain wrong.

Outright grip: Not much idea as I didnt push the ER60s much. Pushed the Michelins and they were ok. The problem is, I keep comparing everything to the Advans! Stupid me! But the Michelins were decent keeping in mind the superb ride quality. Road noise is marginally lesser on the Michelins I feel. Wish someone would donate a dB meter!

The OHC has a soft suspension and that combined with the ER 60s is making the ER 60s look better than they are. This is what I feel. Last night, a Cedia owner drove our NHC with 195/60 R14 Advans. The sidewall is much much much harder than the PP2s(which he has on his car) and 195/60 has lesser rubber than 205/60. But still, the ride quality on the NHC was waaay better than the Cedia.

Because of the softer suspension.

I feel the suspension in the OHC is much softer than the one on the Fiat Adventure which is why you might feel the ER 60s are better.

Unless you have tested both those tyres on the same car?

Nikhil, agree that i have not used both the tyres on the same cars..

however my OHC suspension were hardened, got it done by FRK... What i used to like is that used to not feel the road or it was very minimal... XM1 on Advy slightest difference on the road surface is felt..

Otherwise no complaints on Mich...

Nikhil I agree with your observations. I have driven a Lancer with 195/60-14 Michelin XM1 and I was taken aback as to why the car was riding so well. I thought the suspension was softened compared to my Lancer. Handling wise Turanza is slightly better but only just. The XM1 is better to ride but you do the feel sidewall flex when you push it hard into a corner. The Turanza has no sidewall flex thanks to the metal reinforced sidewall protection belt.

BS Turanza ER60 and ER300

Guys,

Can any tyre guru tell me what is the difference between the ER60 and ER300? Which one is better? My car came with the Turanza 195/65/R15 ER300 as OEM tyres.

Regards,

The ER-300 is premium comfort tyres whereas the ER-60 is the entry level comfort tyres in the Turanza range.

Thanks for this info Vid6639.

My car's a Corolla Altis and I had the previous gen Corolla (9G) which rode on BS Potenza RE88 195/60s. I definitely like the Turanzas better. Much less road noise and better comfort partly due to the higher profile 65 v/s 60 in the older model.

Grippy But Noisy!

Awesome Wet Road Grip of the OE Turanza ER60 on My SX4 VXi. But Road noise is annoying. Done 18000. Worn almost 50%. Expect life of about 40k. Which is ok for Road condition in kerala.

Just trying to learn here..... But why is the above upgrade wrong?

The original size had a rolling radius of 291.55 mm
The new size has a rolling radius of 288.88 mm

So a diff of a mere 2.67 mm !! and circumference difference of less than 1%...

What upgrade is within acceptable levels?

I also knew that the correct upsize for 175/65 R14 is 185/60 R14 & 195/60 R14.

@ Nikhil - what is the correct upsize then? 185/65 R14?

Have the prices of these tyres gone up suddenly? Yesterday, I went to a tyre dealer to check out tyres for our 4 yr old corolla. He quoted Rs. 4,400 per tyre for Turanza ER30 size 195/65/R15. This seemed a bit too high compared to the prices stated here. I think he is taking me for a ride. Can someone confirm this price?

Vinay, I believe the rates are on-par. Tyres in this size are priced around the 4.2-4.4k mark. Michelin is slightly more expensive I believe, Nikhil can confirm for sure though.

It's a decent price. On par with other dealers.

Yup. Michelin is 4.9k

@planet rocker and AbhiJ --- The correct size is 185/65 R14. 185/60 R14 is wrong because you are going in for a smaller sidewall which decreases your ride quality.

In this particular case, Bottle had commented that he felt the XM1+ was a little bumpy over bad roads. I was just pointing out that if you put a tyre which has a smaller sidewall, then you will feel the bumps more than the stock tyres.

Technically, 185/60 R14 is a correct upsize, but it's pointless in the real world. You are much better off going with 185/65 R14. Both are within the tolerances.

Ishan & Nikhil, thanx for your responses. Dealer has agreed to give me the same tyres for Rs.4100 a piece. If I had to make the decision, I would have picked them up for this price. But my dad is more price conscious and he is making the decision. He is more inclined to Goodyear Eagle NCT5 which the same dealer is ready to give for 2500 a piece.

Please, please, please- do not pick up the goodyear eagle- i"ve seen a a car do some spectacular stunts due to lack of grip in the dry. its performance in the wet was appalling. The car finally slid off the road and sheared a concrete pole while i was watching it.
Not worth it . those tyres are murder.

Great. 185/65 R14 is the size I have in mind when upgrading from 175/ 65 R14 in my getz. I also do not want to compromise on the low ground clearance of getz.
