Re: 3GL LCI s alloys bent after hitting a small pothole

If possible get a good set of aftermarket alloys that are your style. Just don’t size up. It’s not worth it paying the manufacturers outrageous premium’s on an alloy that may need to be replaced again. And if the sizes match u can even use the same set of tyres on the new alloys. BBS’s though a bit expensive would look mega on the 3series giving it a real OEM plus look.

Spend 80k and buy a new alloy? Claim insurance as accident and get a new alloy wheel? or Try to get the alloy under BMW secure as tyre is not holding air?
Unfortunately the RFTs transfer the entire 'shock' to the rims instead of absorbing at least some of it. It's subjective of course as a tubeless tyre blowout could have left you in a worse state at that spot.

80K is usurious for a single specimen. Speechless!

Claiming your general insurance is better I feel. BMW Secure will not entertain you as (as far I remember), because if there is rim damage, the tyre ALSO needs to be damaged at the same spot. Check your Secure wordings in detail. But be firm with your BMW dealer and push for a Secure replacement.

EDIT: Looking closely at the picture, the rim bend might potentially be correctable with an expert rim shop. Try that too - has it's own risks but by far the cheapest option.

Sit tight - a rear alloy of 630D is for Rs. 119k and some change.

General insurance also doesn't cover cracked/bent alloys. Our dealership's insurance guy had always insisted on getting BMW secure policy because it will cover the bends/cracks - but when BMW denied my claim the last time - he simply said - sorry sir, I wasn't aware. To add insult to injury - next week he called for insurance renewal, and again insisted "Sir, please mujhse renewal karwa lijiye" and I simply replied "Kuch to sharam karo!!" and ended the conversation.

Everyone who is suggesting that changing to an aftermarket alloy with a smaller size and upgrading the tyre profile will solve the issue - just letting you know, this "modification" will not be acceptable if you have any warranty issues. Irrespective to any problem you might have - warranty would simply be denied.

Re: Are BMW India's wheels the most delicate? Owners suffer frequently bent or cracked rims

Tyre profile seems to be the single most important factor in this equation. I have done over 30k in my X1 riding on 225/55 R17 wheels and have not experienced any issue till date. This on some very bad roads as well. It is also the one of the factors which stops me from moving to 18 inch rims which fill out the wheel well beautifully, the other being the fact that OEM alloys are so damn expensive...LOL.

Drive on,

Re: Are BMW India's wheels the most delicate? Owners suffer frequently bent or cracked rims

I know I'm late to the party. But yes, the wheels are delicate. I owned an F10 LCI 2017 530d MSport until last April. Suffice to say it was no garage queen , will attach photos below. It was four trouble free years and one tyre change after, 500km away from home, when the TPMS alerted me to low pressure, I found out that one of the rear wheels had cracked on the inside. However, the leak was very slow, so I filled up the tyre, and baby-ed the car back home (Got the highest ever mileage of 19.6 kmpl on this ride). Enquired the cost of new wheels with BMW, decided to get them fixed outside (it turned out both my rear wheels had cracked). Within no time, in less than 1000km, the wheels cracked yet again. I figured, maybe the wheel shop didn't do a good job, and sourced a set of used but pristine wheels, which made my bank account cry. (My garage storage looked like GTOs as well - full of 5 series alloys) My mistake? I refitted them with the same Yokohama Runflats on which the wheels had cracked twice before. The new set of used wheels cracked as well within the next 500-600 odd kilometers. Even though I have been following this forum, and I knew GTO has been getting his wheels fixed twice a year for several years before throwing them away, I decided to get one more set of wheels. This time, I was able to get a set of 6 wheels with pirelli pzeros which were almost new (the OE staggered setup, plus two narrower wheels for the rear) from a person who was switching his 530d to inforged alloys. He also told me he was running higher profile tyres than OE spec, and since I bought the wheels and tyres as a set, I used it as such. (Square setup - 245/50/R18 all round, left the wider 275/45/R18 in the garage). I completed another 30000 kilometers without any problems whatsoever with the altered setup, with the added bonus of improved ground clearance.

So to summarise (TLDR)
1. Avoid Runflats, at any cost.
2. Change your tyres early, tyre wear causes wheel damage.
3. Higher profile tyres (Though at the cost of aesthetics, erroneous speedo and odo) can provide much needed peace of mind.

It is a 'bang your head on the wall' type of problem, but not unsolveable. I sold my car to a close friend, who changed all four tyres to Conti Sport Contacts non-RFTs, and he has clocked another 30k km, without any issues.
