Maruti S-Presso | Rim & Tyre upgrade advice

Hello Team,

I recently had a work-location change in Bengaluru, and my SUV is giving me a hard time on the commute because I have to navigate many narrow stretches. My only routing option is to use arterial roads, which will add an hour to my daily commute time. So, I am looking for a second small hatchback.

I considered all entry level hatchbacks, and have almost decided on S-presso for its practicality. Inspite of its odd looks, lifeless steering and unknown crash rating. Buy hey, I will be driving below 40 kmph in Bengaluru's worst traffic, so those attributes may not count for much.

I request your inputs on upgrading the S-presso's wheels. I'm thinking a 15" alloy rim with slightly wider tread, say 185 instead of the stock 165 on 14. Also, would be grateful for any pointers on a reliable alloy wheel shop in Bengaluru.

Thanks!

Re: Maruti S-Presso | Rim & Tyre upgrade advice

Hi,

I think a 185mm tyre should be fine. The car will look better and its handling and braking will improve. Don't go any wider than that as the fuel efficiency will drop. The performance from the 1.0L 65 BHP engine doesn't require wider tyres than that.

Just bear in mind that the 15-inch rims will mean that the tyres' sidewall will be shorter than you would get with 14-inch wheels. This will result in a harsher ride and a higher chance of rim damage on bad roads.

Alternatively, you can just opt for wider (185mm) tyres with the existing rims. The tyre walls won't be much different.

You will find the S Presso to do the job very well indeed. It is narrow and small and can go almost anywhere and park almost anywhere.
If I were you, would stay with the plain OEM 15 inch rims and upsize the tyres to 185 which will give you the cushioning and grip and look good too. I wouldnt waste money on the alloys because frankly the steel wheels do look lovely and they are cheap to replace in case of damage.

I would say stick to the stock wheels and just go for the best possible rubber in stock size. Why would you unnecessarily want to add rotational mass and stress to a 3cyl 1L motor? Not to mention you will be travelling on bad roads so any wheel upgrade is simply going to ensure that you chew through suspension linkages quicker and start stressing the front aprons beyond their designed capabilities. Better quality rubber in stock size will give you all the added grip and braking abilities that you need. Bigger rims and tyres on the other hand will look good but at the expense of everything else.

We were in a similar situation and picked up S Presso VXi+ MT recently. I'd have loved for better rubber, but decided to wear the current MRFs out since they hardly matter in city commute.

Purely for aesthetics, I got a different set of alloys from MGA. Didn't opt for the design which Maruti recommends, as they have become too common.

It's a 14 inch Rim, PN: 43210M81R61, cost me Rs. 7290 per alloy.
