Re: Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

My Seltos HTX+ completed 40K kms and the stock Goodyears were very noisy and harsh; plus I get a sense that they are losing grip on wet highways. Since my drive is predominantly Bangalore-Coimbatore highway runs, wanted to change these at 28K kms, but my neighbourhood tyre store that I visit for alignment kept asking why do I want to spend money (!) before 40K. Went for Michelin Primacy 4 - set of four. Both 235/55/R17 and 215/60/R17 (stock size) were available at Rs.14.5K and 12.8K respectively. After some thought, decided to stick to stock size because manufacturing date was May 23 (others were from July 22) and the wider stance didn't appeal that much to me.

Completed 2000km with 1600 on highway and 200 on KL state highways and remainder in Bangalore traffic. Also experienced extreme rains on highways. Verdict - money well spent. Now I can actually hear the engine noise because tyre noise is hardly there. At 34psi, highway ride comfort is also miles ahead of stock tyres - it almost feels like Seltos' hard suspension has softened up. Very good grip on wet roads. In fact, while coming out of a flyover, there was water gushing across at 2-3 meter width and car just went over that at 80kmph with no drama other than spray. Even on wet roads, the noise is much lesser than before. I had to take the car through wet and slushy mud roads in Kerala and it was adequate there as well.

So far, only mild con I've noticed is that the grooves seem to collect lot more gravel than new Goodyears. That adds to 10 minutes additional work on weekends.

Have you made up your mind? If you're going to upsize, have you spoken to the ASC guys about any impending warranty issues?

I am more inclined towards the Michelin Primacy 3 ST as I have used these tyres on a range of vehicles over the past 5 years and have never had any issues even when I did 160+ on the highways in my Cruze.

However, I am worried about the any issues I may run into with Kia ASC.

My vehicle may be delivered anytime in the next few days so I need to take a call soon.

Decided to stick to the stock size and switch to Conti's. Didn't even consider the warranty issue TBH. Oversight on my part, but since I'm sticking to the same size anyway, it'll be fine.

Re: Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hello! BHPians

I have booked the new seltos XLine DCT Petrol and is due to arrive in few weeks now. It comes with 215/55 R18 (215/60 R17 Spare) JK UX Royale as stock tyres.

I am looking for replacing the new stock JKs with something which removes the road noise and increases the smooth ride quality.

Road noise is pretty evident in the test drives that I took with the stock JK and stiffer suspension feel which I didn't feel that impressive to me.

I have a Baleno in family which I have upgraded with Yokohama BlueEarth GT AE51 at 50k km and the levels of comfort and handling improved manifold with practically zero road noise compared to the stock. It's been 10k with them so far and no issues with tarmac, bad and occasionally worse roads (yes, literally driving on stone chips)

Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-pxl_20220619_12523087501.jpeg

Now, I want to stick to stock size only and those Yoko doesn't come in 18. I browsed some options on the internet.

215/55 R18 - Stock
  • JK UX Royale
  • GoodYear Efficient Grip -
  • Continental UC6
  • Apollo Apterra Cross

Few questions:
  • Is UX Royale a good tyre? My primary requirement is to remove road noise and smooth ride.
  • How are the other options fit against the stock JK?
  • Is Michelin P4+ available in India? and if so, is it good for Indian roads? Asking because I have read horror stories of burst sidewalls.
  • How much exchange price we can expect by replacing the brand new tyres?

Congratulations on your new vehicle. Mine is due in few weeks. Did you already got the tyres changed to UC6? If yes then what are your initial impressions?

Hi, did you get a landing on these questions? I'm in the same boat as you. Also, will the warranty be void upon changing the tyres?

Hello my friend. Going through internet, talking to some people and The replies from @ad1tya also helped make the decision and I have decided to switch the tyres to UC6 after taking the delivery as they seem to be the best possible available option. Yoko and Michelin are not available in 215/55 R18 in India.

Edit:

Do see the pictures shared by @ad1tya with new tyres:

Re: Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

I am expecting delivery of the Kia Seltos GTX Plus in the coming week. I have a long term affilliation with a tyre dealer in Bangalore and he has offered only 1.5K to buyback the original JK tyres. The continental UC 6 215/55/18 has an mrp around 16K and is expected to cost around 13.5K. So I might have to end up paying an additional 12K per tyre +alignment/balancing charges which is really steep. Has anyone in Bangalore managed to get a better deal? Appreciate any references.

Personally I've not really been into the tyre manufacturer/pressure/size Vs Comfort/handling thingy. But I guess it is time to upskill!

Michelin appears to be a clear winner. Will give it a shot at around the 30Km mark? I dont have much wear on the tyres as of now. Shall get that checked too.

I have quoted multiple threads, as I was in the same boat. My Seltos HTX+ is now 3+yrs old and has already covered 48000kms. In my recent trip to some very nasty hills I picked a sidewall cut on my stock GYs and found a tube insert as a temp solution at the hills, which also meant that I had to take out the TPMS.

Anyways after a couple of months of pondering over and being lazy finally got all 4 replaced with Michelin primacy 4st, costed around 43500.

I have driven my cars lakhs of kms and have never ever upgraded my tyres to a Michelin, or Yoko, Conti, Pirelli, etc... and have max been in the GY, Bridgestone territory. This time however, I went first thing and incidentally ended with a Michelin dealer, as I was his first customer of the day, he gave me a great price and I was feeling generous and decided to splurge knowing fully that the car will not remain with me long enough to complete this set. Also there was an expressway trip coming up and I didnt wanted to take any chance with only replacing a pair.

I have since driven around 3k kms and I cant tell you how gratefull I am to the upgrade. The Michelin primacy 4st has totally changed the comfort and there is a night & day difference than before in the comfort, smoother ride, (noise also somewhat). I never would have known updgrading the tyres with softer compounds like the MP4ST could make such a difference and can sole one of the biggest everyday drawbacks of Seltos, which is its stiff ride.

I am sure other soter compound tyres will also help, but I can easily say, for those on the fence about chaning their tyres early, please go right ahead!

Congrats. You have made the best decision for your Seltos.

I went ahead with Michelins in stock size and it's the best decision I could have made. Massive improvement to ride firmness and driving dynamics are much better now over stock Good Years.

Next time, I will go for a mild upsize like 235 60 r17 or 215 65 r17 for more cushioning. Ofcourse it will be a Michelin.

Once you use Michelin on a car, you will never go back to other tyre brands. Absolutely worth it.

In my opinion, Michelin runs for more km than other brands and ends up being worth the price. This has been the experience using Michelin on 3 other cars.

Re: Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Tyres are a crucial component of a vehicle as they are the contact patch between the vehicle and the road. Thanks to Formula 1, you learn the importance of tyres in acceleration, braking (late) and cornering. I am a believer of changing tyres slightly early for the added safety, comfort, grip, braking distance and the fact that it doesn’t matter in the long term if you change the tyre in 4th year or 5th year / 35,000kms or 40,000kms.

Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_0703.jpeg
The badass (as Kia calls it) came shod with the Good Year Assurance Triple Max tyres in 215/60 R17 spec. This tyre received many negative reviews in Facebook / WhatsApp owner groups for punctures, noise, sidewall failure and tyre bursts. I have driven on all kinds of roads without much care, and have never had any of those issues. Yes, they were slightly noisier than the Michelins / Continentals that we are used to but the grip and steering precision they provided was really on point.

Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_7435.jpeg
The Triple Max’s USP is the grip & braking in the wet and they inspire confidence in those conditions.

Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-97d56c62b572f8d73a00013a795833c5.jpeg
I have always maintained the tyre pressure between 31-34 PSI despite the TPMS showing warnings sometimes (below 33) as I think it’s the optimum range for the Seltos to offer a balanced ride.

Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_7418.jpeg
My Seltos, belonging to the first lot has a firm suspension tune. And post 27,000kms, the suspension started to make noises over irregular potholed sections of road. This was reported during the 30k periodic maintenance service. Kia did lubricate the suspension and solved it temporarily but the problem returned.

By the time next service was up, the noise intensified and it was found that the steering worm shaft is also a contributor. This was duly replaced under warranty.

I also wanted to get the shock absorbers changed as I had been reading about the initial lot tune vs 2022 Seltos’ tune. “Improved Suspension” was highlighted in the MY22 changes that was circulated to dealers. I saw this on team-bhp as well, attaching the image here.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-52e8e0d5601e447580530e1747275549.jpeg

Kia supported me by waiving off labour charges and I had to pay only for the parts which amounted to approx Rs 13,000.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_7160.jpeg

This was the best 13k spent as it did wonders to the ride comfort and eliminated the suspension noise. Of course, it is not a day & night difference as you still have the inherent firmness but it’s a pliant riding car now (not firm & not plush either). Earlier it was a firm tune befitting the GT-Line moniker suited to smooth city roads and corners. Also, the Goodyears contributed to the firmness as they became hard, more so since the past 5 months.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_6716.jpeg

Note the hairline cracks on the tread grooves.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_6748.jpeg

Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_7164.jpeg
Now, 4.5 years & 42,000kms later. I decided to take the plunge and went in for one of the premium tyres (Bridgestone Turanza 6i) albeit in 235/55 R17 size.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_6723.jpeg

Karan’s (KKC) assurance on the upsize was the deciding factor.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_7441.jpeg

Although I prefer to stick to the manufacturer recommendation, I felt the need for better straight line stability and speed masking in the Seltos and the fact that Turanza 6i’s were not available in 215/60 R17 spec made me make this good move.

Turanza 6i is the latest launch from Bridgestone. It’s a premium offering (Rs 14.7k per tyre) and they have highlighted silence & comfort in the launch event and media interviews. They are “made in India”

Immediately after the tyre swap.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_7163.jpeg

Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_6750.jpeg
Also, got the valves changed at Rs 300 per piece.

After driving close to 1000kms, I can attest that they are indeed very silent and add to the comfort. The thuds are muted now and there is a layer of suppleness to the ride which I am loving. You don’t realise the smaller undulations and minor road surface elevations with these tyres.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_7165.jpeg

The stance looks more European than Korean.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_7161.jpeg

The added width boosts confidence (much needed) during hard braking. The straight line stability and speed masking has improved too.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-photooutput.jpeg

They performed confidently even in the wet.
Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_7097.jpeg

However, I must point out that this tyre swap has slightly increased the steering weight & slightly blunted the steering sharpness. This may be due to the added width or tyre compound. Nonetheless, it’s not significant enough to be a cause of concern.

Fuel efficiency has improved by 10% despite the wider footprint. This was surprising, didn’t realise tyres could bring in such a difference.

Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread-img_6786.jpeg

All in all, the Turanza 6i’s are worth it and I would strongly recommend them to fellow bhpians & forum readers.

Re: Kia Seltos - Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hi BHPians,

My folks have driven almost 50k kms on Seltos HTX 2020 with stock GoodYear 215/60 R17.

Please suggest anything better than stock GoodYears for replacement, sticking to same size 215/60 R17. Little tight on budget, so looking to close this under 40K. I think that rules out Michelin/Conti/Yoko/Bridgestone.

I guess i am left with below options and as per my understanding (Please correct me if i am wrong):

Apollo > MRF > Ceat > GoodYear = JK.

Hi,

In your budget, there are two tyres available. Continental UC6 & Vredestein Ultrac.

You can shop around your nearby tyre shops or order the tyres online from websites like tyresnmore, tyremarket etc.

Hello, Thanks for the reply. But both these are more than 10K.
Others options i got to know are:
1. Apollo Aptera
2. MRF Wanderer.

Seeking guidance from fellow BHPians.

Yours is the 2nd review(Mini) on the Turanzas 6i.
First of all congrats on the new shoes
I am also planning the same for my 2019 Creta and have a few questions:-

1. How is the Noise compared to the Goodyears?
2. Any idea how much one can expect these to run (Kms or Years) on average . In case you have checked with the dealer.
3.The sidewall . Is that firmer than the outgoing Goodyear's or the same?
