Where can i find someone to manufacture my custom rims as per my specs? Anyone with a cnc machine? thanks
Hi Spawnofsatan,
Heres a wheel that i milled and turned myself..... not CNC.. completely by hand.
Theres only one small problem with it though!! :p (guess)
As for your question, how much thought have you given this?
Is it goin to be a 1 / 2 / 3 part wheel?
What size wheel?
Where are you going to get the stock from?
How much are you willing to pay for the CNC work?
Lemme know,
cya

It's a miniature replica!!! Waise quite resembles some of our Napkin Ring designs!!

U Hit the nail on the head Ishaan!!
Man! How did you make that out, Ishan? I spent at least 5 minutes staring at it before I gave up.

I made it out because I spotted something about the picture that didn't fit properly. But to make it out easily look at the centre bore & the mouting holes, they are WAY too small!!
Boy, I almost fell down imagining someone really machined their own wheel! Although a miniature, nice job.
Wouldn't it prove to be stupendously expensive to machine a real sized wheel? Aren't all rims cast, and not machined from blocks?

No a lot of exotic/high-end Alloy rims are machined from blocks!!
There should be another set of spokes on the other side of the wheel, and the holes more towards the centre, to get a reasonable offset? With this design, I would imagine that the spokes should be towards the centre rather than on one side of the wheel. Just a wild guess.

Even i found something just not right about the picture. I also noticed what Rags was saying about the holes not in relation at all.
but very nice work. attention to detail is amazing.

The problem with custom-made rims (presumably by small-scale manufacturers) might be that they might not meet the strict quality standards required in such a vital component. As an example, there might be the slightest (say 0.01%) deviation from a perfect circle in the rims and you may end up with all kinds of serious problems, both short-term and long-term. And you don't want various problems (rusting, bending, imbalance, etc.) which might arise due to inferior quality of the material and the finish. So I would recommend that you make sure of the quality before going in for custom-made rims.

Spot on. I know at least five cases where this custom made rims broke open.
@ Spawnofsatan, there was (is??) one guy from Bangalore who was doing this business. If you're still interested....I can find out.

I recently learnt what Rehaan & Co. go through in their college & then after seeing this & a few other things believe me this kind of Attention to Detail is mandatory!!!:)
Firstly i would like to thank all you guys for this tremendous response....rehaan that rim you milled is beautiful...i love the attention to detail.
I was looking for either a 2 or 3 piece wheel. When you say CNC will be expensive how much would it be around? I found about this stuff in LA and its pretty expensive there due to the high labour charge. I wa slooking at something that is lightweight. I dont need it to be chrome or anythinf just silkved polished is fine for me.
Rudra Sen, yopu said you knew someone in bangalore that does this, if you could find out for me i would greatly appreciate it....
I am looking for 20x11 in the back and 19x9.5 in the front with big brake clearance. Thanks again guys.
Thanks for the compliments guys :)
I actually had a slight alignment problem when making the holes in the middle, and also the smaller holes were so small i broke 2 endmills.
Also, the holes were not proportional (visually) as irags says because at that tiny size 1/8th", 1/16th " and 1/32" there wasnt much of a range to choose from! lol
And i couldnt get a greater offset due to the limitations of the machines.
Maybe i will put up a thread on how i made this sometime....

What are these napkin rings you speak of?

Firstly, let me say that everything im saying is based on limited knowledge, so i might or might not be totally correct.
Yes it would, but thats why they are usually made in parts and then bolted together (but so are forged wheels and other multi-part wheels). The custom machining is usually only on the face of the wheel, and bolted on to a somewhat standardly produced (donno what its called) barrell part of the wheel.
Bolted. (these are not machined however)
Here are what seem to be ONE peice CNCd wheels.

(They are high end - racing only.)

Agreed.
Unless the CNC shop you are getting your wheels done at has specific capabilities, understanding and experience with wheels in particular (because they are high stress and life-or-death parts) i would avoid it.
To better understand the standard amount of accuracy and checking that goes into making wheels, watch
this video.
