You need to look at sidewall heights:

175/75 R14 (original tyres on Zxi/Zdi): 123mm
195/60 R15 (my Swift diesel): 117mm
205/55 R15: 113mm
205/50 R16: 103mm

The sidewall height comparisons between the last two sizes is 113mm vs 103mm, which means the 205/55 R15 have a full centimeter more of sidewall.

No doubt, the 16-inchers look better. But... sometimes I find the ride on my 195/60 R15s a little harsh (I'm running Yoko A-drives)... I live in bombay, where are roads are mostly pretty decent... and sometimes I wish the ride was a little softer. I'd strongly recommend you get the 205/55 R15 versus the 205/50 R16s. It's a much more comfy ride.

Ive just got one question which will be the deciding factor for me.

I drive on Mumbai roads. Should i stick to 205/55/R15 OR upgrade to 205/50/R16?

Stock ZXI are 185/70/14.

My bad....

In which case the sidewall height on the stock tires would be 129.5mm, and if Epic went for 205/50 R16, the reduction in sidewall height would be 2.6cm... thats more than an inch.

IMO... the sacrifice in comfort and the potential risk to the rims and suspension isn't worth the cool factor of the 16" rims.

But hey... thats just my opinion....

@aerohit
Those honda fat fives look really good on your car,
They look more like the OE rims available on swifts abroad.
Suiting the car well.Btw what tire size you running?

I am again skeptical about the design the SHUs have as it may be a task to keep them clean.
@Epic, sorry for the late reply. I am in Kochi (Cochin). The roads here are nothing special either. They are as bad (or as good) as the ones in Mumbai. If you drive a bit carefully, there should be no problem.

White SHUs look great on a white Swift. I have seen a couple of Swifts on 16" SHUs here and they look hot. Yes, cleaning them will be a bit of a time-consuming exercise. Why don't you look at Samurai SC-01s? These also look really great in 16"! In fact SC01s look slightly bigger (larger diameter) than the SHUs when fitted as SHUs have the chrome lip that make the wheels appear a bit smaller when seen from the side.

About the ride quality, maybe JayD and JayZ can comment on how (bad/reasonable) the 16"s are. JayZ drives a Swift on stock wheels, and he did feel a bit of difference in my Swift yesterday during our mini-meet.

Dealer in south of bangalore for VDi stock tyre exchange.

Folks,

Please let me know, who is the best tyre dealer in south of bangalore (contacts please) for exchange of stock tyres of VDi (JK Tyres 165/80 R14) to Michelin XM1+ (185/70 R14). Also please let me know the approx. cost incidence for this exchange. Can we mount 185/70 R14 tyres on stock steel wheels ?

Thanks.

You can very easily mount 185 on stock steel wheels. Wont be a problem at all. South Bangalore? There are loads!! Cost will depend on the condition of your JK tornados and how many kms they have run for.

Well, this would be brand new tornado's, straight from the maruti dealer to the tyre shop.

I took delivery of my VDi on 18th March and I paid Rs.9,500/- for similar tyre change, i.e., Stock JKs to XM1+ (4 Nos.). Had I got MRFs, the cost would have been Rs.8,500/-.

Calculation goes like (3500x4 for XM1+) - (1000x4 for JKs) - 500 negotiations.

Thanks Mukesh!

I need to search for a similar deal out here in bangalore.

Hello everyone. I'm expecting the delivery of my Swift ZXI sometime next week. I was thinking of upgrading the stock tyres to Michelin XM1 (185/70/14). I don't really want to splurge on alloys, so I'd want to stick to the stock alloys and only change the stock tyres. Could someone tell me how much the Michelins cost in Delhi? It'd be great if someone could also refer me to a good tyre shop here, would ideally want to change the tyres just after delivery. Thanks.

Dear dcreator,

Just read the post above your post and you will get your answer.

I bought XM1+ from Rana Tyres, Karol Bagh (D.B. Gupta Road).

Tyre Upgrde: Its almost here and i am still not sure !

Guys,

Help me get out of this confusion.

I booked a Swift VDi almost a month ago and the delivery is due in next week. But i am still confused on what size tyres to upgrade. Should i stick to 14" and get 195/65/ R14 or should i upsize to 15" and get 195/60/R15. I would mainly be driving the car 70% in city and 30% on highways. Also there are not a lot of choices in 14" rims. But things going in favor of 14" are that Tyre + Alloys would be cheaper and i would get good FE with the 14" which is one of the main reasone going in for swift after the Palio 1.2 Petrol Guzzeler :P

Switch

P.S. With 15" i was going in for the Yoko A Drives but for 14" i dont know what brand to get. Do A Drives come in 14" as well.

Note from Support: Thread merged with existing. Search before posting please. Thanks!

For a VDi, I guess you can upgrade to 15" with 195/60/R15 being the perfect upgrade.

I dont think there aint much of a FE diff between 14" and 15". Atleast not to an extent that you might have sleepless nights
