Hi Fellow Bhpians,
Hope you all had a great festive season!
I own a Swift (2011) Gen 1 K-12 vxi variant without ABS. The odo has clocked 1.4+ lacs kms. I had been on the fence almost for the past 8-9 months to replace all 4 tyres which came in the stock size of 165/80 R14 with factory fitted steel rims. I'm from Kolkata where the festive season is a big affair with beautiful pandals draping the city. However, the aftermath is nails of various sizes being very common on the roads for the next 2-3 months which silently find their way onto the rubbers of the vehicles plying.
All the 4 tyres were changed once during it's lifetime ( almost 14 years now) by my father around 2016-17ish at around 60k kms on the odo, however not all at one go. The stock tyres from the factory were of Goodyear make. Only the Stepney was still Goodyear until now (as it was sparsely used), rest all the 4 tyres were CEAT MILAZE of the stock specifications after the replacement in 2016-17. The experience of using these rubbers were greatly unsatisfactory with punctures every now and then right after using the tyres for roughly 5 months after purchasing. The ride was not at all comfortable even when the tyres were new with bare minimum grip. Cornering & handling were decent, but that credit goes to the stiff suspension setup of the Swift chasis itself. However, still the cornering maneuvers were not really confident on the steering. Drove these CEATs for around 80k until i changed all 4 tyres 3 days back. The last 7-8 months gave me really poor driving experience with frequent puncture repairs (infact, older repaired punctures were leaking air along with new ones!) and Omnipatches done.
I have been planning to go for an upgrade for my tyres from the stock specifications (vxi) of 165/80/R14 to the zxi specifications of the same generation Swift at 185/70/R14 with OEM manufactured alloys. So the entire upgrade would have costed me around 50k INR. Hence, I was doing my research and also buying time to arrange the finances.
However, last week one of the tyres Developed another puncture and when I got to my puncture guy for repair, he instantly advised me to go for an immediate replacement as the treads present were minimal and grips had almost diminished. Also, cracks were deepening on the sidewalls on all 4 tyres.
Therefore, before starting my price enquiry for 185/70/R14 at the tyre Dealer shops, I zeroed in Yokohama Earth 1, Continental UC6 and Bridgestone Sturdo for my considerations. Michelin was my first choice (even though expensive), however the limited available stocks were more than 1.5 years old. Hence, Michelin was out.
Thanks to the teambhp forum, I got great insights on these tyres from various threads. Most importantly, got to know about the first hand user experiences of all the brands.
My preferences turned out to be as follows -
1. Continental UC6 at Rs. 5550/- per tyre
2. Bridgestone Sturdo at Rs. 5300/- per tyre
3. Yokohama Earth 1 at Rs. 5050/- per tyre
To my dismay, the Dealers where I enquired, the Continental UC6 were not in fresh stock. The best I got was January 2024. Also, the all the dealers told me that the warranty claim for the Continental tyres is a tedious process where a customer needs to raise the claim from the same Dealer they purchase the tyres from. Note - I am never wooed by the unconditional warranty periods as the Good brands usually offer the same coverage. However, the warranty claim condition did make me skeptical. Hence, Continental was sadly out of the game.
From further analysis, I found the Bridgestone Sturdo scoring a bit high in terms of blending comfort, breaking, durability, road noise, grip, handling etc. The Yokos were better in terms of road noise (attributing to a higher use in amounts of Silica which is good) but were more prone to puncture. Not sure about the amount of Silica in the Bridgestones though. Also, the Yokos were offering better warranty terms. However, considering my driving requirements, which is 90% in the city's B2B traffic (Considering frequent uneven patches in Kolkata) and rest on the highways, I took a punt on the Bridgestone Sturdo. Also, the Bridgestones were manufactured in the 37th week of 2024, which is roughly around mid August.
Installed the new tyre 3 days back (9th November 2024) and the drove my car for almost 200kms including a short highway drive of around 50kms just to feel the new rubbers ( I know it might sound crazy ), here are my findings till now -
1. Uncanny smoothness & comfort in the ride quality
2. The Dashboard rattles come with a great noise reduction from the tyres
3. The grip and handling has significantly improved. The car feels greatly planted on the road, even at 100+ kms/hr.
4. The tyre noise increases a bit over 100kms/hr, otherwise silent and way less than the CEATs.
5. The steering-wheel feels smoother and surprisingly not heavier.
6. The car feels like gliding while going over minor undulations on the road. That's a nice feeling actually.
7. The minor to average roughness on the roads is still felt, however the levels of discomfort is greatly reduced.
8. Coming to the fuel economy, I was mentally ready to take a slight drop in the same, however, my pattern of checking the fuel economy for the last 5 years is not to go empty tank, but to refill every 80-100 kms (the placebo effect of not spending more ). Actually, I saw the fuel economy at 15.5 kms/litre, where the drive has been 75-80% in the city B2B traffic and the rest on the highway with using the AC 40-50% overall. This is similar to what I was getting previously with the narrow 165mm tyres. Need to validate this with few more tankfills (actually with going below the halfway mark and refill).
9. The breaking distance has also noticeably improved. This is a great change considering my car doesn't have ABS. Infact, I consciously verified this while breaking on the highways and in the city traffic.
10. The speedometer readings didn't change significantly, infact it did remain almost the same as the readings with the 165mm tyre profile.
The upgrade remaining are the OEM alloy wheels which I plan to install in January 2025.
Oh also, the package for all the 4 tyres came at Rs. 21,700/- (21,200+500) in total, with free of cost alignment and balancing. I paid around Rs. 500 extra for the balancing weights of 510 gms for all the 5 tyres which includes the old Stepney wheel.
Also, I did a complete overhaul of the suspension and drive shafts of my car this year in April. Except for repairing the steering rack (which is awfully priced at Rs. 35,000~ for the gen 1 Ritz, Swift & Dzire), all other parts viz-a-viz Struts Assembly, rear Shock Absorbers, Lower Arms, Bushes, Tie Rods, Stabilizer Link Rods, Drive Shafts etc were new MGP replacements. Hoping to keep the vehicle spick and span for another 10 years.
Would write up about the powertrain maintenance activities in another thread probably which I did to maintain the refinement of the K12M motor including the mounts.
Sharing pictures of the tyre replacement at Indo-Radial Kolkata.
Best, Sourav
