Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai

Hi Guys,
Going: CHENNAI –> COIMBATORE -> POLLACHI -> MUNNAR
Return: MUNNAR -> POOPARA -> BODIMETU -> THENI -> TIRUCHI -> CHENNAI

It’s been around 5 month since I did the trip, I never really find some time to write this one. Many of you have helped me in deciding the Trip.
It all started with the buying of the new Getz. So I decided to take up the car for a vacation, as train nowadays needs to be booked 2 months in advance. This is my longest trip so far, other than this I have travelled to Kumbakkonam from Chennai.

Since I was in a 5 days vacation I planned to take a little longer and scenic route to munnar. I had been in Pollachi before and so I didn’t want to miss the climate of pollachi and hence we decided to go to munnar via Coimbatore pollachi.

THE JOURNEY:
Day 1: 20th June Chennai to Coimbatore.
Our plan was to start by 5am from Chennai, We started at 5.15 which is acceptable, my Getz pleasingly swallowed all the baggage and suitcases we had, we were 4 members, me my wife, my dad and mom. I adjusted the vertical incline in rear seat for mom’s side, these feature of getz, ingress outgress was very useful for mom and dad.

Just after crossing Chennai, the roads were absolutely a delight right till Coimbatore. Near mettur there were some bad patches though. My Getz though 1.1 was easily able to maintain speeds up to 140kmph.

Caught a BMW while doing breakfast, he must be doing more tham 150+, just clicked and to my amazement the snap was perfect.

We stayed in a hotel called Quality Sabari nest, it was a good hotel with clean rooms, and great food. I don’t remember the place but there was a Pro-Fx shop opposite.

Thanks to my wife, who was very helpful in writing the logs, I am writing this review since the logs are still preserved.

Day 2: 21th June Coimbatore to Munnar.
We all started after heavy breakfast at Coimbatore, got route from locals which was fairly easy to navigate from there to catch Pollachi. Coimbatore was much cooler than Chennai and the hotel AC was too cold, I ultimately got fever and had to take DOLO in Pollachi to drive till Munnar.

Letz the photos do the talking till the Getz gets us going.

Superb-

Looks like a great drive. I am planning a munnar weekend over the next month. It would be great if you could describe the sights to see around munnar & the amount of time to spend there ideally.

The photos were taken by you as you were driving? Must have been tough. Great shots though. The log is a boon.

Continiuing my trip...

Day 2 onwards: Stay and Travel in Munnar:Tea County:
I had booked TEa County resort in Munnar, its a 4star facility maintained by KTDC. Really good one, excelent resort with great service and food. One of my reason for booking there was that Amitab Bachan sir stayed there during his shooting in Munnar for the movie "Nishabd", so naturally the resort should have been good, so i booked it. Got a good deal with MAP: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner were complimentary, i do not
remember the correct break ups, but i paid around 27k for 3night 2 days stay for 2 rooms.

Ideally monsoon in June was a good time to visit munnar, it rained but not so heavily, so it was as if water from fridge was been just sprinkled on you and after 12 noon the climate just used to change and cloud would cover the full resort and near by mountains. It was as if we had come to heaven, just while entering into the resort it made us felt "aaah
thats great".
View of resort from the road which led to sightseeing:
Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai-e18.jpg
Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai-e2.jpg
Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai-e13.jpg

The resort is not even 1 km from the munnar busstand, which is the centre and market place, since we were staying for 2 days and had our own car we used to go for sightseeing on the morning and return to the resort in the afternoon for lunch, and then spentthe evening in the resort.

Sightseeing in Munnar:
Actually there is not quantity of places like ooty or kodai, but good quality of places exists. specially its fully lush green and different shades of green you will find every where. Munnar is full of Tea plantations from Tata and other companies. Its not fully commercialized so crowed is less.
Sightseeing places can be reached through a single stretch of road, its not scattered in different directions so you can make your own way without the need of any ones help.
1. Munnar market
2. Some flower gardern:
Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai-e3.jpg
3. Matupattey dam
Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai-e5.jpg
4. Boating in Matupattey dam
Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai-e19.jpg
5. Echo point
Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai-e7.jpg
6. Top station (around 40 km from munnar bustand)
Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai-e9.jpg
all the above places were in a single stretch of road
7. Ervakulam National Park
This place was alone in the other side around 8km from munnar, after you reach there by car you will have to buy tickets and taken to the point by mini busses. The roads are harpin and pretty scary, and the high RPM'sin lower gears of the mini busses makes me feel out of control, here you will find the rare Nilgiris thar species of goat if you are lucky, if you arent
lucky you can always google it. i dont know how this place will be on a sunny day, but during moonsoon it was awesome.

if you do not find the goat there, you can always set this as wallpaper

Re: Chennai -> Coimbatore -> Munnar - > Chennai

I am planning for a road trip from Munnar to Chennai by car. Plan is to start from Munnar around 3-4 PM, drive for 4-5 hrs and stay that night somewhere . Start next day morning to Chennai. I am looking for advice on routes, what could be the place to halt so that we can see around some places the next day when we return.

Any suggestions??

Great travelogue, thanks for sharing! Tea Country resort looks good, how were the rates?

Munnar is one place I would recommend for anyone who enjoys driving! It is pure bliss to drive the 50+ kms in those awesome curves and unbelievable scenery and green. IMHO it's a shame to miss out on the driving and go there by train/bus because driving there is the best part of Munnar.
