Yeah it is open only from May (i think) to mid October. after October the route is snowed out and BRO does not take any esponsibility for its maintainence. Impossible to have men working in those conditons. in fact the locals said tat during the winter there is at least 6 feet of snow in jispa and the temperature goes down to around -25-30 c.

Of course these are unconfirmed figures. but during te winter months it is pretty much impossible to go on this route. in fact most of the locals migrate to the 'warmer' regions of Kullu and Manali

I would love to do that kind of trip on my SX4. Too bad... my profession does not give me that kind of vacation required for this kind of trip. I mostly save my vacations to visit my parents and in-laws in rajasthan yearly. May be I can do a trip to somewhere in south india. Can anybody suugest some place? I have already done trip to ooty, poducherry and goa in my SX4. Looking for some more distance this time.

Lovely post Loco. You really have put passion into your drive and for the two of you to do it all the way from Bombay! Kudos!
I had done this way back in 2000 and that was the last time I went to Ladakh - want to do it again now.

Hi Ther
The car sx4 has justified it presence on Indian road along side other sedns including the much awed NHC and the "The men are back" slogan. This car is here to stay for sometime. It is indeed a good car, I own one myself and feeling good that I put my money at the right on. Bought it recently (August 09). Though I stay in Delhi, but unfortunately have not done this route so far. As they say, better late then never. Will do it somtime in the very near and immediate future. I am a driving freak. One thing before I finsih. Don't you thing it is also better and probably a must carry thing to have a pair of snow tyres with snow chains for the front tyres ( drive wheels). Just in case one encounters snow and icey conditions. Please do respond to my query.
By the way LOCO-- Great job ( driving and the photography). I am quite like you and you have given reasons to envy. Hope to hear from you on your further adventures. Like to be on my buddy list. Warning. Have driven thru most of India and am much older then you and your bro.

bump! amazing travelogue. I remember reading it then, when you posted. And now after 50 more Leh travelogues, this still feels the most fresh.
