Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House

Disclaimer: This thread is not to prove the existence or non-existence of paranormal activities. This is my experience of visiting a remarkably interesting place, which I was very keen on visiting since many years and is purely for entertainment purposes.

I love reading about supernatural events even though I don’t believe in them. I have watched numerous supernatural events related movies since my childhood and The Conjuring series is one of my favorites. I had read on various sites in the past that the actual incidents of the first movie in the series had taken place at a rural house located on the border of Massachusetts & Rhode Island. Ever since I moved to Massachusetts in 2015, I always had a secret desire to visit the place, but it was privately owned property, and no one was ever allowed inside.

I usually go for some early morning drives in rural Massachusetts and was exploring some routes for the same in Google Maps a couple of months ago. I stumbled upon a landmark in the maps called “The Conjuring House”. I clicked on it and found out that the house was bought by somebody in 2019 and they now allow visitors as part of House Tours. I immediately opened the link and came to know that they have various kinds of house tours to select from. I selected the shortest tour available called "The Day Tour" and checked for the availability. No slots were available for the next 2 months as it was completely sold out. The first available date was in the first week of November and I grabbed the 11 AM slot. The site also had various other lengthy tours. The "Extended Tour" introduces some of the ghost hunting equipment along with the tour of the house. The "Investigations" allows you to get your own ghost hunting equipment and investigate any paranormal activities by staying at the property overnight. The "GHamping" allows you to camp overnight at the property. The "GHO-Events" comes with a house tour and the opportunity to use devices that capture paranormal activity with the help of an experienced paranormal investigator.

The house is located at Burrillville in the state of Rhode Island. I realized that I have driven past this house various times in the past but was unaware of its existence at that location. The tour organizers suggest all the registered visitors to arrive 15 minutes before the actual appointment time to sign some waivers. One can also download, print, and sign the waivers beforehand to save time at the location. I had downloaded the waiver as soon as I booked the slot. Here is the screenshot of the waiver form. It has some interesting points (Point 8 onwards under the first section)

The D-Day for the visit finally arrived after waiting for 2 months. The farm is located around 30 miles from my home. I started at 10 AM and reached the farm at 10:35 AM. The tour guide showed me the place to park and collected my waiver form. Since the tour was supposed to start at 11 AM, the tour guide asked me to feel free to explore the property and asked me to be at the door of the house at 11. I just went around exploring the beautiful property for 20 minutes and came back to the house door at 11. By then 6 others who were part of the same tour arrived. Our guide then took all of us inside the house.

I'll just quote the About section from their site which provides an accurate description of the house. Source

Quote:
The Old Arnold Estate, located in Harrisville, R.I., is an authentic colonial home, circa 1736, whose paranormal phenomena were made famous by The Conjuring movie in 2013 depicting the hauntings of the Perron Family that lived there in the 1970s. Its paranormal past runs deep, as far back as the 1700’s when the spirits of native tribes remained embedded in the land up through the present day with the many spirits who continue to inhabit and visit the property.

This mystical farmhouse offers visitors an opportunity to engage with authentic paranormal activity and is considered one of the most active paranormal locations in the world. Set on 8.5 acres surrounded by stone walls, open fields, a river, and a forest, visitors come from around the world to observe and connect with the energy here that Andrea Perron describes as "a portal cleverly disguised as a farmhouse." Since opening to the public in 2019, thousands of visitors have witnessed and engaged with the abundance of supernatural activity present here.

For anyone longing to connect with the other side of existence, this is the place to do it. The Conjuring House is a historical treasure, with pastoral beauty, providing those who are curious with an experience they will never forget. For some, an experience here can provide the key to understanding that our consciousness survives death and that we can connect with those who have passed before us.
The Living Room

Our tour guide took us inside through the front door and we were taken to a beautiful living room. She explained the detailed history of the house, along with all the paranormal events that happen in the house. There is a lot of difference between the events that were portrayed in the movie compared to the actual events. Most of the events in the movie are way more dramatic than the real ones. But the real events are equally or more horrifying.

According to the guide, various spirits considered this as their house but the most famous one is that of Bathsheba, who was rumored to be a Satanist. She was portrayed in the movie as a person who practiced Witchcraft, sacrificed her baby to Satan, killed kids of neighbors and had hung herself to a tree in the property after cursing all those who take her land. All these incidents took place in 1863. According to the guide, this story is false, and Bathsheba was not practicing Witchcraft.

The modern-day paranormal activities were reported after the Perron family moved into this house in 1971, which was the basis for The Conjuring movie. According to the guide, Roger Perron, Carolyn Perron and their 5 daughters started experiencing paranormal activities right after they moved in 1971, until they moved out in 1980. This was the time when the famous paranormal investigators, Edward and Lorraine Warren investigated this case, which is very well portrayed in the movie.

The living room of the house is on the ground floor:

One of the four fireplaces found on the ground floor:

The Common Room

This is the room next to the living room. According to the guide, this is the place where Lorraine Warren conducted a seance to attempt to contact the spirits that were possessing the Perron family. During the seance, Carolyn Perron became possessed, speaking in tongues, levitating from the ground in her chair and was thrown across the room. After witnessing this incident, Roger Perron was so angry that he asked the Warrens to get lost and leave them alone.

The Carolyn levitation event happed right at the place where the couch is placed, and she was thrown near the fireplace that can be seen in the background. This scene was portrayed in the movie.

This room also has a replica of the infamous Annabelle doll, which was donated by someone. The original doll is at the Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut where the Warrens used to stay. Our guide clarified that there is no relation between Annabelle and the events at this place. They just got tagged to each other due to the opening scene of the movie where the Warrens are seen working on the Annabelle case. One can see notes and coins placed all over the doll. They are placed all over the house by visitors as a donation to the spirits located at the house. The owners use all the donated money for the repair activities of the home.

The library

A beautiful library is attached to the living room. This is another haunted room according to the guide. The security camera and multiple folks have witnessed in the past a book being thrown around from the shelf on its own. It’s always a particular book that gets thrown around which is titled as "Joy of S**".

The Dining Room

We were then taken to the dining room. This room doesn’t witness much paranormal activity.

The Kitchen

The Kitchen too didn't have any attached stories. It's modernized and is used by the resident staff for cooking:

The Restroom

Unlike the dining hall and kitchen, the restroom is haunted by an unknown, harmless spirit. Our guide mentioned that multiple folks have experienced a figure moving around while relieving themselves. It even scared some of the staff and they had to build a new restroom at the barn. Brave souls can still use this restroom without the risk of pants getting wet

The first floor is where all the action is. We were taken upstairs through these creaky stairs, which lead into the master bedroom of the house. This room is apparently haunted by a harmless, friendly spirit of a person called Abby (I don't recollect the full name).

A colonizer with the native Indians. This place used to belong to the Nipmuc tribe in the past:

A kid's hand impression can be seen on the wall. This is on a portion of the wall above the native Indians photo which is made up of Plaster of Paris. This is at least 300 years old. A customary practice that was followed during those days where the kids of the house used to level the Plaster of Paris on the walls, and this is one such impression.

The passage at the right leads to the kids room:

The passage also has a hidden closet which is very spooky and can scare the living daylights of any individual:

The Kids Room

This room is the most haunted room in the house according to the guide. Anyone who has watched the Conjuring movie will immediately recognize this room. This room has a couple of beds and closets. This is the room where the youngest of the 5 children of Perron family stayed and witnessed all sorts of paranormal experiences. The kids always used to complain about hearing strange sounds from the closets, clapping sounds, chair rocking on its own, etc. There is a hide and seek sequence in the movie, which happened right in this room:

A creepy doll:

This room is also the home to a friendly spirit (I forgot his name). He has the habit of arranging the toys neatly after the kids are done playing with them. Our guide mentioned that multiple visitors have witnessed the car on this table automatically falling off and moving around the room on its own. This room indeed has an eerie atmosphere. It was colder compared to all the other rooms upstairs and this was felt by all of us:
Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House-img_9946.jpeg

This room has another passage, which leads into the third room upstairs where the eldest of the Perron kids stayed. The younger kids, who used to experience the scary experiences in their room always used to run into this room in which the elder siblings stayed. This is depicted in the movie too:

Even more creepy dolls:

The third room has a secret room behind the door shown in the pic below, called the Babying room. This used to be the room which was used by pregnant women to give birth to babies in the olden days. According to the guide, a few kids of Perron’s guests got inside this room while playing and got locked out and had a terrifying experience. They were tormented inside the room by unknown forces before they were rescued:

This room has another set of stairs that has a secret connection to the basement:

The Basement

The Basement

All of us were taken to the basement after touring upstairs, which was even more interesting. The first thing that we notice after entering the basement is this small room. This used to be the room for storing food items for the winter in the past. But this room also has a chilling side of the story attached to it. It was also used to store the dead bodies of the people who died during harsh winter as they could not be buried in the burial grounds due to the accumulated snow:
Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House-img_9981.jpeg

The room next to it is called the "Well Room". It's called so because of the presence of a well inside the room. It's in the dark corner of the room and is barely visible. According to the guide, most of the houses constructed in 1700s used to have a well inside the house. The reason for this is that during the colonization, people who wanted to grab lands used to poison the open wells outside so that the entire family dies, and one can easily claim the property. These indoor wells were built to avoid poisoning of the water by outsiders:
Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House-img_9982.jpeg

Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House-img_9983.jpeg

This room has some more crazy history associated with it. In the 1950s and 60s, the family which used to live in this house used to run a pre-school in this room (what an ideal place to run a pre-school ). The kids used to always complain about witnessing scary spirits. One particular spirit was called a crooked neck spirit which most of the kids used to see. The kids have drawn a depiction of this spirit on the walls, which is still retained as shown in the pic below. The pre-school then got closed due to the frequent supernatural events. The entrance to the basement was blocked later due to all these strange occurrences, which was opened only for any maintenance work on the heating equipment and boilers:
Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House-img_9984.jpeg

The room next to it has some fake Halloween decorations. I don't remember any stories related to this room:
Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House-img_9985.jpeg

The person (I forgot the name) who used to visit the basement for the equipment repairs frequently encountered friendly spirits. He had even befriended a lady spirit. One day he was in a bad mood and freaked out at the lady spirit. He has never seen that spirit since then. He still visits every year to apologize to the spirit, but it has never turned up after that particular incidenct:

Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House-img_9988.jpeg

Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House-img_9989.jpeg

The basement has one more set of stairs at the other corner, which leads to the passage between the living room and the dining hall:
Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House-img_9990.jpeg

This is the place at which the Hide & Clap incident happened with the Perron family, which was captured in the movie too. Whoever has watched the movie will remember this scene:

Outdoors

Outdoors

The tour concluded at the basement, and our guide asked us to check out the property by ourselves for the remaining amount of time. Pictures are not allowed during the tour, but one can take as many pictures as they can after the tour concludes. Video and audio recordings are strictly prohibited in the property.

We all used the next 20 minutes to explore the property. It was a chilling experience to go upstairs or basement alone after listening to all the spooky stories. Once the indoors were explored, our guide asked all of us to explore the outdoors and the woods behind the house, which has the infamous Conjuring tree, where Bathsheba had hung herself. The outdoors was as creepy as indoors. There is an eerie silence in the woods which scares the living daylights of us even in the broad daylight. I can only dread the experiences during the night. Posting some pics from the woods.

This is where GHamping folks camp:

All of us were back at the parking lot exactly at 12. We bid farewell to each other and drove back.

The overall experience was fantastic (and creepy). It was a different kind of experience, which I have never experienced anywhere else in the past. Our guide did an awesome job of explaining the detailed history and the paranormal events of the property. She is also a professional paranormal investigator. She is a treasure house of paranormal stories.

The only ghost which was spotted during the entire tour can be seen in this pic

Oh! How can a travelogue be called complete in TBHP without a customary pic of the car? Here is the pic of my car in front of The Conjuring house.

It’s important to note that this property can only be visited with a prior appointment. There are no exceptions. They are fed up with illegal visitors, investigators, ghost busters, etc trespassing into their property. There are instances where even the official visitors on tours would steal artifacts from the house as well as from the property. Some of the visitors have even engraved their initials on the basement walls. The two families who stayed in this house after the Perron family moved out even sued Warner Bros for making this property famous through the movie. They faced a lot of problems with unwanted trespassers landing on their private property unannounced and vandalizing stuff. Even the neighbors weren't spared of all the antics. So, whoever wants to visit, please book an appointment on their website and then visit. During the visit, please strictly respect the rules of the property. Children under 6 years of age are strictly not allowed (and for some of the longer events, children under 16/18 are not allowed). It's also important to note that The Conjuring movie was not shot at this location. It was shot somewhere in North Carolina.

Some final questions which few of them would be curious to know:

Did I experience any paranormal activity or encounter any spirits during the visit?
- No.

Do I believe in paranormal events?
- No.

Did my belief in supernatural events change after visiting the house?
- No.

Would I try to convince those who believe in supernatural events that there aren't any?
- A firm No. I respect everyone's beliefs.

Would I go back to visit this house in future?
- Absolutely Yes. I definitely want to go back to experience the longer tours and preferably stay overnight (GHamp) in future. It's that kind of an experience which can't be felt anywhere else. I'm not sure how many of the events really happened, but I am not here to debunk any of the theories or events. The intention of this visit was to enjoy the experience in one of the most infamous houses at Rhode Island, which has so much history associated with it.

Did the visit live up to expectations?
- It exceeded my expectations. Our tour guide did an awesome job explaining all the stories/experiences of this house. I felt that an hour long tour is not at all sufficient to digest everything.

Meanwhile I'm already making plans to visit to The Warrens' Occult Museum at Monroe, Connecticut which house the infamous Annabelle doll along with thousands of other artifacts which the Warren couple collected during several of their supernatural investigations.

Just quoting myself from the opening post. There is no way I would have ventured into the woods alone if I had the prior knowledge of all the events that our guide explained later during the tour

Re: Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House

What an eerily wonderful thread, guyfrmblr

Tbhp is a treasure-trove, exactly for this reason. One gets to read about every topic under the sun!

Looking at the images themselves had a chilling effect, with flashbacks from the film in my mind. You have narrated the room-wise sequence superbly.

I am myself a big fan of the Conjuring series and the paranormal genre itself, so this was a wonderful start to my day. Glad I read this in the day and not during bedtime.

Kudos to you for sharing your experience here. Looking forward to more such ghostly stories and experiences from your end.

Thank you for sharing this amazing experience, just reading it gives the chills, GHamping will need some serious daring!

Being curious about the place, looked it up on Google Maps, and interestingly the Street view for this address has been blurred!

For someone who is very interested in the paranormal and the supernatural, this is amazing. Thank you for giving us a detailed tour of The Conjuring House. Felt the creeps even while looking at the pictures.

Even those woods are spooky like you said. They infact remind me of the EVIL DEAD movie. While that movie feels funny today, it scared the crap out of me when I watched it in the 4th standard.

No doubt about it. I visited during the broad daylight which gave me the chills. I can only dread the experience at night. Get this, our tour guide noted that she stays alone in that home for a week every month. The master bedroom at the upstairs is where she sleeps She has the nerves of steel.

This was requested by the property owner to avoid unwanted attention by individuals online and then show up at the property unannounced for investigations.

Thanks for bringing up the reference to Evil Dead. I agree, the woods more or less looks the same. It's one of the movie which used to scare me a lot during childhood. I never used to sleep alone for days together after watching that movie.

Re: Haunting in Burrillville - The Conjuring House

Wow, what an exciting tour. Being a super fan of The Conjuring series, I thoroughly enjoyed your writing. It's like visiting the place through your lens. Thanks for sharing!

If you ever take a more extended tour or visit The Warrens' Occult Museum, please share your experiences here. Cheers!

I am planning to watch The Conjuring again today.

Good that you took a Toyota for the tour. Any other car would not even start after the tour and you would have been trapped forever

I always have interest in paranormal related stuff. Your thread is wonderfully penned down with the relevant scary information. There is always something fascinating about the other side which we as a human being always love to explore.

Hauntingly enjoying Tour. Your Photographs captured almost everything except "Casper, the Friendly Ghost".
Just one small question : Did you feel the need to recite 'Hanuman -Chalisa' ?
