If you want to experience breathtaking scenery, try visiting the Poladpur Ghat which connects Mahableshwar to Konkan. Its a 42KM long Ghat and has descent road condition. I had once took the following route while coming to Pune from Diveagar:

Diveagar - Mahad - Poladpur - Mahableshwar - Pune

it is absolutely safe to drive ,the expressway is fun, however you gotta take the nh17 via poladpur route to really see some amazing vistas.
try the ravine hotel at panchgani, off season discounts are good and the view is to experience, you have fog filled rooms and wind to blow you away.
some pics.

Thinking of going there this weekend if the roads are fine.

Hi cyberwhizs,

NH4 is an all weather road.
After you turn left for Wai, the road is good ( though you feel that is is not good enough after the stretch of NH4). There are only few stretches (not substantial though), that require careful driving.

Overall, the route and roads are just fine - info update as on 10th Sep.

Hope this helps.

Re: Rain & wind swept Mahabaleshwar/Panchgani

@Sandip Thanks. I am aware NH4 is usually pretty decent but wanted to check with someone who travelled recently. Had a nightmarish experience experience when going to malshej a month back. The roads at kalyan were non existant, even on a empty road it took half an hour to cover 3 kms. Moreover i have couple of elderly folks with me hence the query.

Thanks again.
