Yes, South island is the most beautiful country I have ever visited, lovelier than Scotland (I did six driving tours there), Norway or Switzerland. Actually, it beats Tasmania hollow in terms of scenic beauty.

For example, imagine driving on a near empty road, running along the edge of a deep blue lake, towards distant mountains capped with snow. Length of this drive is 60 KM - takes an hour if you take it easy.
