Somebody had a query about this. So I am bumping this up, it is Kambala season again. Next 2-3 months, it happens in many places around here. I'll try to get a time-table.

@ v1p3r - great idea. I am game any time
Just saw these comments.

The KL07 registered Dicor has already participated in a similar event in Kerala (Livestock Racing) more than a year back where it competed with a relative's Mahindra Tractor on the "track" used for the original race.

Perhaps I should now call it the Safari Dicor Kamballa.

Sorry - no pics. It was a spur of the moment thing, not planned out.

I had to replace my sidesteps (running boards?) after this 'race' when it hit a hidden rock. You will notice my truck features the sidesteps from the TCIC and not the Dicor originals - they didnt have the Dicor's plastic step-covers in stock because this was not long after it was launched.

Hidden rock in the live stock racing track? That is very dangerous for the the racing animal and the driver. Like we have potholes in roads, they left a rock in the mud tracks.

Not really - the cattle dont race very close to the sidewalls (the mudbanks surrounding the paddy fields, for want of a better word). I slid towards the sidwalls though and that particular mudbank had a rock protruding out. That is why it hit my running board and not my wheels or undercarriage.

The vehicle carried the stink for a few days.

PS: Just saw Samu's pic of the 'Track' - in Kerala (or at least in my village) they dont have a purpose built track for the race. Its usually held in the single biggest paddy field in the village, which incidentally happened to belong to our family.

The other difference is that the Karnataka race seems to be a drag on a strip while the Kerala version is a circuit race where they have to do x number of laps around the field.

I missed the Kadri Kambala in Mangalore, despite living within a kilometre from the venue.

Hope Samurai posts the Kambala calendar soon.

Superb pics,Samurai! I've read a bit about this sport. I think the TV program on Doordarshan- Surabhi (hosted by Sidharth Kak & Renuka Sahane), did feature this sport in one of their episodes. I know..it was a long long time ago..
I must say, even the guys running along ought to have pretty good speed,to be able to keep up with their buffaloes.
Waiting for more pics..

Its actually a good idea to have a tractor on standby during these races.. we had a tractor at home which was regularly called out to pull out trucks and other vehicles stuck in the slushy mud. I have seen the tractor do wheelies while ploughing the field !!
