Glaciers & Geysers - Forever West

Hello Team-bhp friends, This was our 10-day trip to Glacier National Park & Yellowstone National Park, USA which we took recently.

Glacier National Park - is in Montana State, bordering with Canada. In fact a small piece of park is extended into Canada, but majority area of the park is located in USA. Total park is around 1,000,000 acres mostly with Rocky Mountains range. People visit this park during summer to enjoy the scenic drives, mountain hikes, nature and wild life. As the temperature starts rising during summer, all the snow starts melting and forms into streams -> water falls -> lakes -> rivers. There are plenty of water falls and lakes to see and enjoy.

Even though there was a desire to visit this place from long time, all the planning happened just within one month.

Booked tickets by United airlines: Atlanta-Chicago-Bozeman; and return Bozeman-Denver-Atlanta.

Booked a mid-size SUV at Bozeman airport through Hotwire.

Why I chose Bozeman? - From Bozeman, its 5 hrs drive north to GNP and around 90 mins south to YSNP.

Booked hotel at Rising Sun Motor inn which is right after the East Entrance of park on Going to the sun road. (Going to the sun road is the major scenic road which cuts across the park).

Booked couple of boat tours on St Mary Lake and at Many Glacier.

Booked Best Western at Gardiner, MT for Yellowstone National park.

D-day: Everything was smooth with flight journey. After around 5 hrs of flight, landed at Bozeman around noon and walked straight to Alamo to pickup the car. It was a Toyota Rav4 4WD and within no time we are heading north.

Let the pics do that talking.

All these are random pics taken while driving to GNP.

Re: Glaciers & Geysers - Forever West

By the time we reach GNP, it was around 7pm and weather was little bad. Its raining, cold and windy. We straight away went to Rising sun motel had dinner and went to bed hoping weather will be better tomorrow. Next day it was little better and we started driving west on Going to the Sun road.

Some pics from Going to the Sun road:

These places have been close to my heart as well...I just cant get enough of Yellowstone !

Did you get to go on the "Going to the Sun" road in Glacier National park ? Its a great drive when open, and going through the Logan Pass is an experience to remember !

I am looking forward to more pics of Yellowstone from you...were you able to cover the entire park and all that Yellowstone has got to offer ?

Yes Raghunandan - "Going to the sun" road is what almost all people go for in GNP and we are not exception. We drove all the way to west end and returned. Also visited Many Glacier and Two Medicine areas of this park.

Coming to YSNP, being with two kids (6 & 11 years), other than driving on "8", we did took some small hikes to see falls, canyons. All the details will follow in the next posts.

Barren lands, not much picturesque too. USA's adventure is in its Cities, wilderness is darn boring. Come to compare it with what Europe or Asia, Africa has to offer & you would not revisit the pics. again!

Thanks for the effort & pics. though. Maybe some more & I start enjoying!

Going to the Sun road contd..

"Logan Pass" is the highest peak on Going to the Sun road @ elevation 6646 ft. The parking lot you see in the below pics are from Logan Pass visitor center, which will be open for public only during summer months (Mid-june to mid-september) and will be closed because of snow during rest of the year including this road.

"Continental Divide" also passes through this area - meaning all the water from lakes, rivers etc east of the divide drains into Atlantic, and west of the divide drains into pacific.

Probably depends on what you like. But I thoroughly enjoyed these landscapes while driving through roads. Most of the places it was all ranches with some crops here and there. I felt like watching a western movie.

AWD,

Uh, don't know what you're talking about. US and Canada has some of the most spectacular and pristine vistas on earth. And their national parks are easily accessible and cannot be touched by any other continent, not Europe, not Asia or Africa. Probably Russia's Kamchatka wilderness can compare.
