Blore-> Shivasamudram

hi, This is an old travelogue... I have been reading Team-BHP and just got the coveted membership. We went to Shivasamudram (~130 km from Bangalore) in August 2010. These falls are located on Cauvery river and are the second highest waterfalls in India (after Jog Falls).

We got up early in the morning and left our house at 8AM on a saturday. There are two routes of reaching Shivasamudram (1) you can take the NICE road and take the National Highway 209 or (2) you can take the Mysore road and take a turn at Maddur (~100 km from Bangalore). After reading various travelogues of BHPians, I decided to take route 2.

The traffic on Mysore road was just like a car race (Which is common, unless you start very early). We reached Maddur by 1030AM. You need to watch out for the road that goes towards Malavalli. This is just where the Mysore road takes almost 100 degree turn towards right (inside Maddur town). Alternatively you can ask local people for the route to Malavalli.

Please Note: The falls are famous as Gaganchukki and BharaChukki. Not too many people are familiar with the name Shivasamudram. The state highway roads are not too bad, just keep the speed under control because the road passes through many villages.

There are two falls Gaganchukki and Bhara Chukki. Gaganchukki comes first and you need to take a left turn at the entrance of what looks like State electricity board entrance. The falls present a breathtaking view. The water flow was huge and the falls were generating a mist of water droplets due to the height. After clicking few pictures and enjoying the amazing view we left for Bhara chukki. You can get another view of Gagan chukki from what is known as Dargah view point. Bhara chukki is few kms from there. We reached Bhara chukki by 1 pm and the view from the top was breathtaking. The walk down to the banks is little scary as the steps are made of stone and cement. the descent is rather steep at some places and is not advisable for elderly people. On reaching the banks of the falls, we also took a couple of coracle rides. This was the high point of the trip. The boat ride was just out of the world experience. Let the photographs flow now

Nice pics. We visited this place last year and loved Bara Chukki falls. The falls are indeed very majestic and the roads are very good for most of the distance. You can also include Somnathpura in this trip as it is only around 35Kms from Shivanasamudram.

Yeah, best time to visit Shivasamudram is from July - November, the best part of the trip is the coracle ride. The guy spins the boat at high speed and you are left holding the edges of the boat

Re: Blore-> Shivasamudram

This is probably the nearest falls from bangalore. I did this trip way back in 2009.

Its a beautiful place indeed. But the crowd getting there is really pathetic.

Yeah the crowd is definitely a turn off.... and can you imagine people actually taking bath in the river using soap and shampoo...

I guess one way to counter rowdy crowd is to start early and reach the falls by 10-11 AM... usually people start showing up at around 1 in the afternoon
