The other option is the hard top offered by Brimba. It has the looks and I believe that it comes in 3 pieces so its easily removable. It doesnt cost a lot as well. And the guy ships them across as well so that looks like a good option the way I see it.

As for the seats. wonder if the Wrangler TJ seats can get installed. they are foldable as well, will try to give it a shot next time round. will have to look for a good one at the scrappies.
Thanks for you advise dear. Yes, the possibiliy of leakages will definitely increase over a period of time as suggested by you. I think i ll give the HHT a skip...

As far as Bimbra is concerned, I just dont like its looks. I think it doesnt match with the slightly rounded corners and appearance of the Thar.

Would love to have the Wrangler TJ seats but have no hope of sourcing them here. Am waiting for more suggestions from the forum.

Thanks again.

We are in same boat

My Thar is 15 days old, clocked 1000 kms. I don't have any issue with driver and co-passenger seat however I am looking for rear front facing seating arrangement and a HT.

HT
I too found Hyd HT a nice choice and specially the sun roof. Talked with Prabhu who is the product owner, he can ship it to my place however I am interested to fit it from him.

Second choice is Italian HT which is looking awesome but too costly, I learned from one of the FB group that M&M customization can make available a Italian HT on order. Are you talking about the same or the other which they display at site made by them, rear roof tail lamp?

Also what I learned that while choseing HT one should look if it is two layer or single, the hyd HT is 2 layer not sure about Italian and other.

Rear front facing seating
I loved the one done by Bimbra, also they change the co-passenger seat mount so that seat can be folded on dash to make way, not sure how easy that will be but looks good.

You can view all types of possible arrangements here

Thanks,
Vishal

We are in the same boat as many many others i guess

The mahindra customisation HT is 2 layers with reinforcement within and lining from inside.

I am not sure if they ll make available the Italian HT but even if they do it won't be any cheaper. I was told by them that they can provide the HT shown on their website or modified as per customer requirements. So one can get them to make something very similar to the Italian version. Without those obnoxious looking tail lamps too! They also have colour options to choose from.

If you are serious about the hyderabad HT, you should check it out in person first, as i personally am not 100% convinced about its fit and finish from pictures seen. It does look really smart though. Neat piece of design.

Bimbra seats look good but its ruled out for me as i cannot travel all the way to delhi just for seats.

Anyway, thanks for your inputs. May the Lord help us Thar owners find suitable HTs for themselves....

I can safely vouch for that. The boys at customisation are very good. My jeep is with them at the moment. No, not doing a HT. Will reveal all soon.

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

Gentlemen,

I have now finished 5 months and a little over 5500 kms on my wee Thar. I have had thoughts on this lovely jeep - right from HT to changing all the seats to doing something about door trims to relocating the speakers from below the rear benches.

I've done nothing. The seats grew into me or I grew into the seats. I dont really care about the speakers much anymore. The noise went away after a quick trip to the service station (no charge), My partner loves the ST and forbade me against a HT (well, I did buy her a flashy softroader to keep her away from the Thar). Yes, of course we all have different needs but before you spend money on your jeep, I do suggest you give it some time and do a few k's.

After my five thousand odd kilometres, INR 3900 odd for the 1st service including wheel allignment etc and an additional INR 20 in door locks, I am quite happy. The jeep is smoother, quieter (God bless NBS ... they are really good). Oh.. and I threw out the original horns and spent an additional INR 1200 to get the Hell red grill's.

Now ofcourse the jeep is at the custom studio getting a few odds and ends. I shall update in seven days with pictures.

Best regards,
Suedehead

Dear Suedehead

Had a look at your garage. With all those amazing cars with you, having done 5500 in five months shows how much you love your Thar.

Is your Thar being used for city driving? If so, how do you manage the security with the soft top? I havent installed an ICE yet and have to be really careful while carrying my laptop or tablet. One of the reasons i want the HT.

Also on high speeds(above 80kph) theres a lot of noise and the flapping sound of the soft top.

Waiting to see what mods you get done...

Rgds.

Dear Naved Sahab,

To clarify... the cars in my garage are from the past! I now have a proud Thar, an Innova for the daily humdrum and a fluffy Outlander to keep the missus believing she has a butch 4x4

To be fair, I rarely use the Thar for a normal city commute. Even if I do, I have a secure car park at work. However, I have done highway rolls with baggage aplenty while I have gone out for lunch and no dramas. Not saying that dramas do not happen. It just has not happened. The only precaution I have taken is placing the all too visible GPS unit in the under seat locker. In the early days, I used to carry a small satchel to stow the odd laptop and GPS. Now I just do not carry anything. I also never ever leave a laptop in an innova. (Too visible).

Yes, the wind flap is there but I usually only get it in excess of 100 kmph. You may want your local garage to check if its all good and tight.

Most certainly, I will share pictures and details of the additional bits and pieces I am now doing.

Sincere regards,

Suedehead

@suedehead, since you have owned a Scorpio in the past; it would be worthwhile to read your comparison of the the Thar with the Scorpio in terms of pros and cons.

Bhpians,
Have been hearing of an engine change in the new Thar 2013. Just wanted to know if any of you have any info or updates regarding this? Also what changes are expected in the new refreshed Thar?

Oh Dear! A comparison between the Thar and my old Scorpy CRDE 2.6 liter!

With due apologies; I am sure such a comparison will be hugely off topic but also sacriledge. These two vehicles are as different as cheese and butter with perhaps nothing but the motor and fun factor common. Mate, the scorpio in my humble opinion is a bit of a soft roader which needs extensive modifications to go seriously offroad. The Thar on the other hand is an off roader which needs extensive modifications before you want to soft road!!!

Sincere regards,
Maverik

PS - I did promise updates on me wee Thar. However it is taking some more time to come back to me. I am however posting a garage pic. Sorry, the jeep's dirty but do take note of the fancy new parking brake installed carefully near the RHS front tire.

Dear Suedehead - please get the canopy buttons above the doors fitted properly or changed by the ASC. I can see that they are loose in your photograph. Also loosen the M6*1.0 bolts under the canopy lower edges, pull it down and retighten. This will help to reduce flapping and wind noise.

Great observation BD sir. I have ordered for those buttons with my local dealer one and a half month back n have still not gotten them. I have not tried to take out the soft top though I would have loved too coz I am sure they are going to break. Can you suggest any other method to fix this part of the top.

Sir, thanks for information. I have same observation on my Thar however I thought there will be no way to fix it. I will make note of it in first service.

Additionally, the board with tharmal material added under front cancopy, it makes sound sometime on bad road as it is loose from left side. I tried to push it down but it comes up again.

Thanks,
Vishal.

Hi Sudeehead,

Great looking machine there!. Can you please post some details on how you have installed the hi-lift jack on the bonnet latch? If possible, can you please post some detailed photographs?

Thanks!

Dear Drlmtukkar and Vishal - I want to really laugh, so let me attach LOL first! .

These buttons are common with a "very very small people carrier" vehicle made by the company where I presently work (ahem!), they are available in bulk. I had "taken" them from "there". Let me give you some background.

When I designed the canopy, I wanted this edge above the doors to align perfectly straight and sit completely tight, common sense isn't it? The correct way to do that was to introduce M6*1.0 projection welded nuts inside the box section, use an ornamental spacer on the canopy and tighten the bolts from outside. But by doing this, two things would have happened.

1. The part number of the box section assembly would have changed. This happens with its assorted bells and whistles, minimally mentioned as "PPRF to FTR" (you don't need to understand, you are hereby spared!).

2. The tool used to tighten these bolts would have touched the rain channel top, calling for something called "special tool" which happens with its own assorted bells and whistles, minimally mentioned as "TACT" (you again don't need to understand, you are spared once again!).

Using the buttons was the way to circumvent 1 and 2 above and also to then introduce 1 and 2 as "running changes / product improvement" projects with fancy presentations (with tea with saucers) on tooling costs, welding fixture timelines blah blah blah! .

Do you know that you are blessed much more than me? Whatever you do, you have to do only on one vehicle, yours! So, please remove the buttons (you will have to cut them, otherwise they will break and damage the mounting holes), take a 6.5mm longish drill, drill 5 holes in the inner panel of the box section through the outer panel holes, fabricate a simple channel with 5 corresponding holes in it, use M6*1.0 size suitable length bolts, insert from outside, assemble with flanged nuts from inside and tighten. Do not overtighten otherwise the box will collapse. As these nuts should not loosen, use locknuts without flanges on them."Simple", isn't it? It is again a Sunday morning leisure activity.

It is high time this "product improvement" should have happened in production. God bless, what else can I say! I'll do it on my Thar as and when I get it.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar
