9 Month update and a quick review of VW's Passive TPMS -
Alright, so time for a due update on this thread.
The car has run about 5k kms by now (it's lower than what I wanted but things have been hectic for the past 6 months).
First check-up -
I got the first checkup right after I made the above post (at around the 4 months mark), and got the welcome kit and a wash complimentary.
The SA did not say anything about the delay in getting the checkup and the car was taken in without any delay or hassle.
No issues were found by the service folks, neither did I have any, apart from brakes squealing at low speed. About this I was told that it is a common VW behaviour and is only an issue if it also happens at higher speed. I did read on TBHP about this being a common issue indeed, so I simply let go.
I also asked them to install updates if any, initially the SA told me there weren't any for my car but later I got a call to ask the Valet mode password, apparently for a reset of the infotainment system. I'm not sure if the version was updated, i didn't note the previous version.
Overall they did a good job cleaning the vehicle and i have seen no Android Auto disconnection since the 'reset' (could well be a coincidence). I also enquired about a couple of accessories while I was at the service centre, primarily the OG VW horn for which I was quoted around ₹4800 which seemed a bit steep to me at the time, but now feels like a necessity and I regret holding off on it when I had the chance. Bangalore traffic (especially because the dreaming 2 wheelers and autos riding in the middle of the road simply ignore my honking more often than not)
Getting a puncture and my general experience with VW TPMS -
Among other updates, I got my first puncture (a 2-inch screw in the rear left tyre). The built in TPMS detected the puncture, but it did not give enough info and since the air leak was slow, the first time I got the error I physically checked (admittedly in my dark basement) and simply refilled the air, thinking I missed the tyre in the last manual check and refill a couple days back. Only once the warning returned after a couple of short drives and an office run, is when I could really confirm the puncture - this time I spotted the screw too. I simply changed into the stepney and drove to a nearby tyre shop.
Now, one can't blame me for being skeptical of the passive TPMS, the system had previously given me only false positives out on the highway twice by now, leading me to stop in the middle of nowhere and check pressures manually, only to find everything in line or at best, the pressure off by 2-3 PSI
On the brighter side, I ultimately turned the lemons into lemonade by getting a package deal from the tyre shop on the JK Treel TPMS and a mushroom puncture repair, along with all 4 wheels balancing. Now I can easily monitor my pressures and will be safe from any false positives!
Leaving with a parting image of the Taigun on stilts during the TPMS install. It's amazing how much brake dust accumulates on the font tyres and calipers.
