Congratulations on your new purchase and you have made an excellent choice.

One thing that I have noticed in the luxury segment is that the quality control department isn’t as meticulous as say a Maruti or Mahindra (the missing screw on your left door a case in point). After paying north of a crore these things things really shouldn’t happen. Since you’ve already made up your mind to replace the RFTs, should they give you any problems, I think you have a dream machine in you garage.

Cheers!

Re: My BMW X3 M40i | Ownership Review

Congratulations on this amazing purchase. I too own a BMW X3 M40i in the Brooklyn Grey shade in the US. I feel you absolutely did the right thing by going ahead with the X3 M40i instead of the X5 40i since this feels so much different behind the wheel due to lighter weight and the "M tuned" engine. The same engine on the X5 feels a lot different.

I complete agree with your likes and dislikes. I love the handling of the car but the ride quality seems too stiff for my liking even in the US roads (they are not great to begin with). I too like the iDrive7 better since I have physical buttons for Climate Control and can get into sports mode with just a click of a button. You should try driving the car in Sports+ mode and feel the upshifts with a boom sound (basically spitting out un-combusted fuel). The FE can be great on highways. When I did constant speeds of about 80mph (128 kmph), I got an FE of about 30.6 mpg (13.01 kmpl). But FE drops down crazy when you floor the throttle. For the H&K audio, I feel it could've done with slightly better bass and treble. Disabling the Logic7 on the sound settings improves the Bass IMO.

Also if your car has the hybrid system, then the engine should turn off during stop-go traffic, annoyingly you cannot turn off the system since there is no dedicated button like other BMW cars. But it turns off if you are in Sport mode. If you have the hybrid system, then your car makes 382bhp and the 0-100 timings are 4.4 seconds .

If you don’t mind, can you share the break down as KUN in tamilnadu is denying any such pricing possibilities. Thanks in advance.

Re: My BMW X3 M40i | Ownership Review

Congrats XDriver. Finally, you got around to posting your review.

Welcome to the X3M40i family.

Fantastic review and I love the color of your car. Hopefully, my next BMW (if I ever buy in future, will be in this color). Didn't you get an option of Red Interiors (I personally believe Grey/Red is the perfect combination)?

Sorry to know you have had rattle issues. Not sure if you follow my X3M40i thread?

I have completed 3 years with my car and zero rattle issues, still on stock tires and completed > 50,000 kms. Personally, for me it's been a dream run. Touchwood !!

I was in Hyderabad in December (I used to live there) and was hoping to spot your car in the city. Haha!

Wish you tons of happy and safe miles of enjoying this absolute beast.

I have driven the X5 40i. As you rightly said, B58 in such a heavy body is quite different and actually "meh" to drive. Folks buy the X5 for space and more luxury. For " fun factor", it's the X3M40i all the way.

Btw, Did you change your tires? If yes, which ones and review please?

I have changed my tires so many times.

Both my X3 30i and the X3 M40i came with the same staggered setup - 245/45 R20 in the front and 275/40 R20 for the rear

When I bought the X3 30i, it came with summer performance tires - Bridgestone ALENZA 001 RFT. I was very enthusiastic when I bought the car, took corners really hard and ended up burning them within 14,500 miles. But the Alenza were great tires when it came to handling, road noise and grip. They used the grip the road like a leech. Probably the best tire if someone is really enthusiastic in terms of driving, but they wear out really fast and are very bad for winters and had harsh ride quality.

In Colorado, the winters are brutal and it is difficult to drive in winters without snow tires. So exactly when the ALENZA tires were done, it was the beginning of winter so I ended up purchasing winter performance tires - Pirelli Winter SOTTOZERO 3 RFT. I used the winter tires for 8000 miles, they performed really well during winters, giving me confidence to drive on snow and they had significantly better ride quality than summer tires due to thicker sidewalls. They also lasted long with no signs of wearing. I had to swap them at the end of winter. The only problem with these tires are that they don't have amazing grip in normal road conditions. I can only take curves at probably at 70% of the speed at which I can take the summer performance tires in normal road conditions.

Once the winters were done, I had to store the winter tires since they were as good as new even after 8000 miles. This time I decided not to go with the ALENZA since they wear out very fast. I was looking out for All Season tires but unfortunately there were no All Season RFTs for my car tire size. There two options other than the ALENZA - Michelin LATITUDE SPORT 3 and Pirelli PZERO PZ4 LUXURY. Both were RFTs. I read reviews online that the PZERO had better life overall, had lesser road noise inside and slightly better ride quality compared to the ALENZA and LATITUDE SPORT. In-terms of cost, the ALENZA was the most expensive followed by PZERO and LATITUDE SPORT. So overall, it looked like PZERO was a better deal, so went ahead with the PZERO, drove the car for 3000 miles and then sold the car. But the PZERO definitely did not show any signs of wearing and had very good grip, but the ALENZA were definitely better in terms of handling, but I was not complaining since they would be friendly to the wallet.

Like I told, I had to sell my 30i and the X3 M40i came with ALENZA again , I checked the carafax record and the ALENZA had been used for 8000 miles prior to my purchase. I drove the car for 10000 miles before the winter tire swap and the ALENZA were worn out already. So this time around the tires came for about 18000 miles compared to them only lasting for 14500 miles in the X3 30i (thanks to my toned down driving style in-terms of taking corners ). Currently car is running the SOTTOZERO winter tires. I have to purchase new set of summer tires in May and the plan is to get PZERO.

So I would suggest going for the Pirelli PZERO. The same tires are available for your car tire size which is - 245 / 50 R19 Front and Rear tire size.

My current OEM RFT's are Pirelli PZERO.

When I was configuring my car, I had the choice of Bridgestone and Pirelli PZERO. I never regarded Bridgestone as a high-end tires (maybe my mindset issue) and I know Pirelli's are popular for high end cars and known for performance. Hence, I chose the Pirelli PZERO's.

Good to know your feedback on Bridgestone that they stick like glue. But, I think they have less life.

My experience with Pirelli PZERO run-flats have been nothing but exceptional. In my 32,000 miles (50,000kms +) of driving. It took a beating in multiple road conditions- Snow, Rain, Dry with zero punctures till date. Touchwood!

Despite pushing the car in mountain roads in rain and snow, I never had a single scary moment as the tires would grip just fine.

Out of my 4 tires, 3 are still at 5th point and One is at 4th point. I can continue to use it for another 2k-3K miles. But, I decided it's time to enjoy some new tires.

I have shortlisted :

1. Michelin Pilot Sport 4 ( All Season)
2. Continental DW06 (All Season)

In most likelihood, I am gonna get the Michelins even though they are expensive which come highly recommended.

I can't wait to experience the Michelins which are superior than the Pirelli PZERO RFT's.

Details post the change will come up on my thread.

Re: My BMW X3 M40i | Ownership Review

A quick update on the rattle issue:
KUN BMW Hyderabad were kind enough to send the engineer and technician home for diagnostics and check up on the rattle problem. It turned out to be a slight misalignment of bonnet and left bonnet hinge. It was immediately fixed then and there at my place and now all is well and voilà the rattle is gone. Appreciate KUN Motoren service.
The engineer confirmed that the X3 M40i indeed has a 48V mild hybrid system in place!
Cheers

Re: My BMW X3 M40i | Ownership Review

Congratulations on the car! She is a beast indeed! As far as the request sensor goes, my 2019 model in the US had the sensor on the inside of the front door handles. So, when you went to open the door, they would unlock if the key was in your pocket. It would never work quite as seamlessly as BMW hoped though, so I had to lightly touch my fingers on the inside of the door handle just like I would while opening the door, wait a couple of seconds for the car to unlock, and then pull the handle. You could check to see if that’s the case for your model as well. The lock sensor was at the corner where the handle met the body of the car.

It's exactly same in 2021 and even the LCI models.

As you rightly said, if the key is in pocket, you just make a gentle tug at the door handle once. Second tug, the door opens automatically.

It's pretty convenient and never faced any issues with this method of opening the car.

Re: My BMW X3 M40i | Ownership Review

Congratulations on your (now a few months old but still) new purchase. Just came across your thread. I wanted to know, what is the minimum octane fuel cars with such engines can handle? Also the fact that it doesn't have the speed chimes is such a bonus.

The octane rating for the B58 engine (X3 M40i) is 91 minimum and 95 recommended.

Re: My BMW X3 M40i | Ownership Review

I have been using XP95 Fuel regularly. Can use 91 octane too but I feel 95 gives better performance.

As far as I remember, 95 is not octane but, RON.

95 RON in India = 91 Octane in US

I fill "Only" 93 Octane in my car which is probably 100 RON. Fuel plays an important role and I would not recommend using 91 (RON).

Mobike, unless the X3M40i is different, the 40i engine is typically derated a little bit for our petrol. The minimum is RON91 here with RON95 as recommended.
