An unexpected tale | Moving from our beloved VW Jetta MT to the VW Virtus GT 1.5L TSI MT

Our (my wife & myself) journey with our Jetta is quite a long one. We have had quite a cherishing and amazing memory with it. Jetta has never let us down as we had taken care of it on time with our FNG every 7k to 8k kms on the ODO.

Jetta details:
Year 2009 | ODO 77k | Color Blue | Petrol Variant | Mileage 10 km/l | Manual

Usage: We mainly used it for city drives ~70% and highways ~30%.

The car had never disappointed us with respect to the driving comfort, stability and safety.

Safety: The car has robust build quality. To open the boot, one has to use his full arm power to lift the lid.

Engine and Gearbox: 1.6-litre engine with an adequate amount of power - 105 PS. It has 5 manual gears. Each gear has a sufficient gear ratio. We have never felt the urge to shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. So it is relaxing in a way to use it inside the city.

Ground clearance: While we travelled with just 2 of us on board, we never had any issues. But we had scraped the belly a few times when the car was loaded with 5 adults and that too on uneven speed breakers.

Stability: As the body is rock solid, the car can cruise at 120 km/h all day without any drama. I remember once I went to my native - started at 4.30 am and reached at 8.45 am - just over 4 hours to cover ~400 km. Never felt any fatigue.

The body is wide enough. The doors open wide enough. Hence, ingress and egress were never a problem for my wife or the elderly.

I love the interior of our Jetta. It has no fancy dash or such things. I am an old-school guy. Hence, I like it to be subtle.

No niggles even after 75K km on the odometer. Not even a single complaint. The NVH is perfect enough.

Looks: I feel the design of the Jetta is timeless and we have never felt bored with it. Especially the rear profile. Over all these years, I had looked back at it whenever I parked it till the moment of handing it over.

I wanted to write much more about Jetta. But it brings pain that we had to part ways. It felt more like a first break-up.

Rear profile of Jetta: My favourite one

Virtus Story:

We were in a dilemma as to whether we really needed to change the car. In September 2024 the FC needed to be done for the car. I was asking my wife that even if we were changing the car, could we keep the Jetta ourselves?

One of my friends was looking to change his 8-year-old Swift diesel with 90K km on the odometer. When I told my wife this, she said let’s go for the test drive with him for the current new cars. The bottom line was that we just tagged along with him and we had no serious intentions of buying a car. My friend wanted to see the SUV types first. Me and my wife were interested only in manual transmission and were really particular about it.

Mahindra XUV700: The car was big enough. The 5-seater was a good option for us. We liked the dark blue colour. When we test-drove it, we were stunned by its power in the city traffic. The 360-degree camera was quite useful in such a vehicle. But for a test drive car with 3K km on the odometer, the interiors were making noises which was a concern. But our friend and we were convinced because of the power.

MG Hector: MY wife was awestruck by the MG Hector’s exterior look and the interior as well. We test-drove it. It was like a cruise ship experience - literally floating. Such spacious seats and nicely done interiors! The engine did not feel powerful. It was smooth though. After the test drive, we inquired with a couple of our colleagues who owned it. Though I don’t want to boast about their reviews here, we had it on our options.

Kia Seltos: The car was big enough for an SUV. We sat inside the Sonet and Karens, but are interested to test-drive the Seltos only. The sales executive told us that the petrol with high power only comes with a clutchless manual transmission which we are not comfortable with. Hence, only my friend took the test drive of the automatic. The car's interior is good and spacious enough for an SUV.

Skoda Kushaq & VW Taigun: Both the cars looked nice from the outside, but did not feel spacious enough on the inside. We drove both cars, but we did not get an SUV feel though they come under the compact SUV segment. Well, I was least bothered as I was not interested in both. My wife, who loved the Kushaq for its looks, was left disappointed after driving it. The mistake we made was that we test-drove the XUV700 first and then the MG Hector:(

The Virtus and Slavia weren’t available for test drives. We were told that they would bring them to our home when they were available. That said, we had a long drive to Wayanad in our friend’s red Slavia and were aware of the car’s ride quality and interior.

Grand Vitara: We weren’t so keen on Maruti, but my friend test-drove it. We all were stunned by the mileage data claimed by the salesman.

Hyundai Creta Petrol SX variant: my brother-in-law has recently purchased it and we had driven it a few times to our native. We did not like the soft suspension, but it is really a good car for daily city driving. My friend was interested in the Knight Edition in Black.

Virtus 1.0: There are 2 VW dealers in Chennai if I am not wrong. We contacted VW South OMR with whom we test drove the Taigun. They said they had only the 1.0-litre version for a test drive and the GT test drive vehicle has gone to Pondicherry for a week. We test-drove the Highline 1.0 variant. Regarding the looks and interior, it felt okay-ish. I don’t like the fancy dash or interior though. Our 14-year-old Jetta’s interior was nice. The power in the Virtus 1.0 was adequate. But we are not convinced overall.

Slavia 1.5: Though we had four trips in my friend’s Slavia, my wife wanted to test drive it. She liked it and the interiors were impressive along with the drive quality. The engine was composed enough for city traffic and had incredible power once the accelerator was depressed. With the digital dash and interiors, she loved the Slavia very much. The sales executive from Gurudev Motors was one of the most impressive among all the ones I had interacted with. So mature and calm and very informative with practicality. A big shout out to him.

This is when we both had our minds convinced to upgrade our car.

re: An unexpected tale | Moving from our beloved VW Jetta MT to the VW Virtus GT 1.5L TSI MT

Since my wife liked the GT version due to its appearance, we both wanted to test-drive it. The other dealer in our city (VW Sundaram) was prompt enough to bring it over immediately on the same day that we called. There was a slight delay in the timing. We wanted to test-drive before the evening office traffic, but he came at around 5.30 pm. The colour difference between the 1.0 test drive vehicle and the GT version white made a huge difference in the first impression (mainly for my wife). She loved the interiors which are subtle done in the GT version and a few other noticeable things such as leatherette seats with ventilation. We both loved the raw power of the 1.5 engine. We both felt like it would be an actual upgrade if we went for it. She was keen on the Rising Blue colour but then I told her that white would be a better option and she agreed.

Price details:
Initial quoted price from VW Sundaram: Rs. 20.90 Lakhs inclusive of accessories.
Final concluded after discounts: Rs. 20.10 Lakhs.

We did not inquire much about mileage and maintenance stuff which I had gone through of many GT users on the forum and also, we ourselves have been used to VW for a long time

The VW Sundaram sales executive was pushing us to book and wanted us to complete the payment procedure on or before 30th October as the increase in road tax was about to get implemented by 1st November. He was also saying that the next lot will come with electric seats which will cost an additional 45K which he used as a sales pitch. Since we have finalised the Virtus, we haven’t bargained, nor demanded anything from the dealership.

VW Sundaram Motors - Overall a good experience. Though there is nothing to complain about, I hope they improve on approaching the customer and understanding the easy conversion customers among others. Since I have been in Sales for almost 15 years, I expect them to offer much more in terms of customer requirements.

VW had evaluated our beloved Jetta and given us a quote that we were least interested in. We informed our FNG about this and they quoted an acceptable price.

We got our Virtus GT manual white delivered on 3rd November 2023 evening at VW Sundaram's delivery place at CIT Colony, Alwarpet.

We took it to the temple for the rituals and went for a drive of about 100 km on ECR.

Till 28th November we had clocked around 600 km with drives on ECR and the city. And on 28th November, we drove to Bangalore as this was our first long drive since the purchase. The current odometer reading is 930 km.

VW Virtus - Observations/Feedback - All points compared to our Jetta
- Driving it with 100% concentration since it's a new car makes it a bit exhausting
- White is our preferred colour though my wife wanted rising blue. Because even a small scratch was highlighted in our Blue Jetta. Though it is an interesting colour, sometimes the appearance of a minor scratch makes me worry.
- The car feels higher than our Jetta. The ground clearance is much better.
- The steering feels light. So does the body of the car. Hence it is easy to manoeuvre in traffic. The soft steering material gives me new car feel over and over again.
- The gear shifts are smooth and the gearing is comparatively short between 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. I used to press the A-pedal in 1st gear in Jetta, whereas in the Virtus, the car moves if I just release the clutch in 1st or 2nd in the bumper-to-bumper traffic. The Jetta has relaxed gear ratios for its 1.6-litre engine and has only 5 gears. In the 600 km covered so far, I have used the 6th gear only twice.
- The IRVM is a bit small and the rear windshield is also small. I might get used to it in some time. This is where the reversing camera helps. I am ok with its resolution. Not going to complain about it as most of the time, I take care to reverse without the help of the camera.
- The power is much better. This is where we felt the real upgrade. Overtaking is ultimately effortless.
- This car has made me composed in such a way that I have started driving in a much smoother manner even though it has much more power compared to the Jetta.
- Coming from the simple dash in our Jetta, initially, the digital dash was a bit of a distraction with respect to the view, gear shift and notifications. So I have changed to a much simpler view and try not to look at it at any point while driving. The ICE is installed subtly along the dashboard area which looks better in my view.
- My wife keeps pressing the A-pedal without knowing that the car is going beyond the speed limit. So I told her to be cautious regarding the speed limit.
- The brake is absolutely and ridiculously sharp. We are slowly getting used to it. Still trying though. The tyres are good enough for the initial run. Alloys are decent enough. I love the black alloys and red colour brake caliper combo.
- We are using Apple CarPlay. It works seamlessly. The audio system feels better especially while hearing AR Rehman songs.
- The AC is decent enough as we always set it to 21 or 22 degrees. The ventilated seats are a boon on highways and long drives.
- What I really miss is when we take our Jetta in the noon, I just long-press the unlock button while entering the car and it rolls down all the windows. The Virtus is missing that option.
- The LED projector lights are powerful in pitch-dark areas and I am using the fog lamp (halogen) while driving inside the city to spot potholes easily. The wiper blades have been adequate so far even in the recent heavy rains.
- The armrest in our Jetta can be pulled up and pushed down based on the body height of the driver. In the Virtus it settles in one position only.
- I have been using Indian Oil petrol pumps only and normal fuel only. Though we are used to our Jetta’s fuel consumption which is about 9 or 10 km/l, I am not much bothered about the consumption data shown on the dash so far.
- The default car horn is okay-ish. So I informed the dealer to change it to a trumpet horn.
- NVH - nothing except the engine’s roar is heard. I want to add the same insulation under the hood of the Virtus which comes as default in older VW cars.
- Boot space: Sufficient one just like our Jetta.
- The sunroof is neither useful nor useless. I am okay with its presence, though I did not miss it in our Jetta.
- I asked the dealership for the dashcam they offered in VW which is Blaupunkt. They said they would let me know once stock was available. But there has been no response from them yet.
- Been using the VW Connect Plus app. All the data such as trip locations, speeding, sharp turns, sudden braking, car location, etc can be viewed. It evaluates the driving style which is subjective. I don’t want to get used to it though.
- Interior quality is good but the 15-year-old Jetta still looks and feels good quality-wise. Though VW provides subtle interiors for the car's price, I believe it will last longer like the previous gen cars.
- The fancy dash and the app data make me feel that the machine controls us rather than we control it. Though it helps us in some way, it is a bit of a distraction sometimes.

Overall we felt happy with our upgrade in every single aspect. We wish we could have kept our Jetta along with the Virtus. But practically, we couldn’t.

Hope I have covered all the aspects. I believe it helps in decision-making for those looking to buy Virtus.

Though there are very limited options in the sedan segment, we narrowed it down to Virtus which was in our budget. This was our perspective. As I come from a 2009 Jetta which has a really good 1.6L engine and nothing fancy in it, me and my wife considered the interiors and updated dash with ICE as additional factors. We would have gone for a GT even if it came with the same dash as our Jetta.

Cheers
Shiva

I am really curious, being someone who lives in a metro city, why were you so fixated on a manual? Especially since these VW/Skoda cars come with a brilliant Torque Converter (paired to that 1.0 TSi, it suits to the car better and gets the best out of that engine) and that awesome DSG that comes with the 1.5 you got.

Oh boy! What a beauty Virtus is! My wife had her heart stuck on Virtus, but thinking about the pathetic traffic and tight corners of Bangalore roads I chose Taigun over Virtus. But, whenever we see a Virtus on the road, “My dil goes mmmmmm”.

Can you please give a review on the pharaoh mats? Are they worth the price? I have the mates from VW but they don't cover the transmission hump and its a pain to remove my dogs hair.

Congratulations! The white GT is a thing of beauty. I wanted to get the white myself but was vetoed by the rest of my family, and went with Wild Cherry Red.

The recommended fuel by VW is 95 RON. Is there a reason why you are going with normal fuel?

Heartiest Congratulations on the Virtus! At the moment, it is the only legit upgrade in the VW family from the Jetta. The manual iteration of the car is slick and very fun to use.

However, if I were in your shoes I simply would not have let go of the Jetta. They just don’t make cars like that anymore. Don’t know if that makes me an enthusiast or hoarder? You be the judge

Wishing you many many happy miles in this beauty!

I get this a lot. Yes we live in metro. But firstly we don't use the car on daily basis for commutes like for work and running errands etc. We use it twice in a week that too mostly on weekends and for long trips visiting places and my native place. So we hadn't fed up with manual in hectic traffic conditions. Secondly we have driven friends' cars which are automatics in few of our long trips. But genuinely we felt that is not our cup of tea. No offence to automatic users.

I can really understand the point you are referring to. I recently had our trip to Bangalore from Chennai. I drove for a day inside the city. Felt sort of uncomfortable with that traffic conditions. Wishing you a lot of happy miles with your Taigun

I bought based on the feedbacks shared by fellow BHPians shared here in the forum. Quality wise it looks better. Its a no non-sense mat for sure. It is easy to clean and have a good grip so far. But honestly I need sometime though to give a detailed review. Even I wasn't satisfied with the VW mats provided. Yes we do have dogs as well. Its a pain to remove those. I personally feel that it's worth the price. You can negotiate with the pharaoh dealer for discount price.

Thanks for the wishes and wishing you all happy miles with your Cherry red GT.

I wanted to go for 95 Ron. But unfortunately 95 Ron weren't available with most of the petrol station when I went for the refill. So I have planned to fill with 95 ron after the 1st check up/service.

Thanks for the wishes. Well, I did not want to let go of the Jetta. With regards to the parking and few other factors which were a major concern from my wife side, I had no other go. You just can't go against things pointed out by herself. Hence the decision

re: An unexpected tale | Moving from our beloved VW Jetta MT to the VW Virtus GT 1.5L TSI MT

Congratulations on your new machine. I had my white GT DSG delivered in October 23' and am getting to know her each day. I am currently exploring dashcam options and have shortlisted a couple of models.

As you have already installed the 70mai for your car, would like to know if you have had a discussion with the VW team (dealership/service) on the warranty impact if we are using external accessories from what they offer. Will be helpful if you could advice on how you've executed the dashcam installation, assuming it isn't hardwired.

I had discussed my intent of installing the dashcam during my Swagat Service visit to the service centre and seeked their advice on any precautions to be followed to which I did not receive a convincing response from them.

Thanks and congratulations once again.

Hello shiv4747,

I recently purchased the VW Tiguan and too couldn't do this right out of the box. Someone informed me of a convenience setting in the infotainment that is disabled by default which you need to manually enable to allow this function.

Go to Car > Settings > Opening and Closing, then under Window Operation select Convenience Opening and tap on All windows option.

Once thats enabled, next step is to make sure the car is locked and then long-press the unlock button to roll down the 4 windows and panoramic roof. It will not work if the car is already unlocked, another small detail I learned on the way.
Many Congratulations on the new car and wishing you many Kms. of joy : )

I wanted to install VW offered dashcam. But they keep saying they are out of stock and not sure when it will be available. So I installed 70mai dashcam and connected via 12V socket using usb charger. I haven’t let the car for the swagat check up yet. I will keep you updated what their say on the dashcam.

Thanks for the wishes.

Regarding unlocking windows, I have checked the options in infotainment. Unfortunately in Virtus, It shows options only for the doors and not the windows.

Higher sitting position and ground clearance ruins handling, are you completely sure about a car with such dynamics handles better than your old car?

Hi Cayman_95,

With regards to Jetta, I had driven in all the terrains. The handling in Jetta was ultimate. It brings in more confident that I expect. No matter the speed nor the road condition.

I am yet to try with Virtus. Yes it is higher than Jetta and ground clearance is better. I had a 650 to 700 kms round trip which was in highway with Virtus. I was in speed limits as the engine is in break-in period. But the Jetta's rock solid stability cant be compared to Virtus but still I don't have any complaint with Virtus stability and dynamics handle so far.

Let me keep this thread updated more on Virtus in upcoming days.

Cheers
Shiva

UPDATE: 1000 KMS CHECK UP FEEDBACK POST SERVICE

An unexpected tale | Moving from our beloved VW Jetta MT to the VW Virtus GT 1.5L TSI MT-img_2190.jpg
  • Left the vehicle after fixing appointment with VW mount road on Monday morning. Initially over call while fixing appointment, they assured that car will can delivered in 3 hours since its just 1000 km check up.
  • Our sales rep introduced us formally to the service manager and service head.We listed out the minor compliant we had faced.
  • Here are the issues we mentioned about.
    1. Ac compressor sound. Hissing noise often
    2. Wind noice over right side driver window above 100kmph
    3. Infotainement disconnection rarely.

Since these above are mentioned service manager said it will take a day or so since there are many vehicles coming in due to Chennai floods.
  • Next day we called regarding the delivery. But they said its almost done and just water service was pending. Since we were not in any hurry, we said ok.
  • Next day in the morning we got a cal to take the delivery. I went around 4 pm and took the car.
  • I found the AC flow was slightly better. But I wasn't convinced though.
The wind noise above 100 was slightly rectified.
Regarding the infotainment disconnection, they asked to connect carplay before the drive. So that it works flawlessly. I understand that while driving, we weren't able to disconnect one and connect other.
  • I fuelled up XP95 this time. Went for a long drive. 1.5 engine is really fun. I just love it.
  • Though the car accelerates effortless and I dont find any body roll even in high speeds on curvy highways, the body stability can't compared to our first Gen VW Jetta.
  • With all the excitement during the delivery of new car, I did not find any complaints on the dash plastics in the front and in the windows, now I feel that it could have been better. The light color areas in the doors are bit difficult to manage it clean.
  • Please mind the boot while open it using remote. We need to make sure it settles in a position when we open.
  • The stiff suspension feels good in highways whereas in city, I drive it with more cautious as we had spent quite some for out jetta in our 14 years of ownership.
  • Regarding the mileage the long term shows average of 13 kmpl. I observed that it gives 9 to 10 kmpl in city b2b traffic.
  • Last week there was an unexpected accident when my wife took the car out. A ford endeavour hit our car when she is was in idle in a signal. The rear bumper bottom area with that crome part got loosened. Nothing happened to my wife nor the car besides the same above.

Thankfully we got the dashcam installed within 3 weeks of our car delivery. THe for endeavour guy was decent enough to told her not to worry and apologised it was his mistake and shared his license, visiting card and his car's docs. He told to inform him once the VW service gives us the quote for the damage. No major scene.

  • My wife wasn't convinced enough regarding the AC work. So we wanted to go to service again to check on the bumper thing and the AC after discussing with Relationship manager's feedback call.
  • Once we reached the service, they attended us and checked the AC and told us this is the maximum limit we can do as the compressor has certain level and instructed us to keep 18 degree with 2 points in fan speed.

They hooked the rear bumper and told us there werent any scratch or anything broken. We were happy hearing this and informed the ford endeavour person regarding the same. He was glad as well.
  • During our long trip to Bangalore while returning, due to new roads and rain, many micro tar marks are all over the car body. Will be leaving the car for a detailed polish car wash.

We are happy with overall performance of the car. Since the car is out of break-in period, planning to take for a long drive in upcoming days and update more about the driving experience.

@Ikon1.3 The service manager nor the service head did not ask us or bothered to question us regarding the dashcam I have installed as it is connected to 12V. I turned off and manually unplugged the wire from 12V socket before I left it to the service. Just FYI.

Need suggestions from our beloved TBHPians.

Is it worth to unlock the features using coding? Does it come with the certain exceptions? or if I plan to unlock, it will disable to 80/120kmph alarm as well? Because I want those alarms to be present and other features to be unlock.

Please advise.

Cheers
Shiva
